It is the frame story from the Arabian Nights in which a woman tells stories each night and never finishes them before dawn in hopes of living another day. For if she doesn't give her husband, the king, a reason to extend her life, she will be executed at dawn. The next night she finishes the story from the previous night and then begins another. In Dokey's version of the story, Shahrazad is blind and brave. She has learned to see with her heart and knows that the king has been deeply wounded by his first wife who betrayed him. As she helps the king heal through her stories, they both learn how to forgive, trust, and love each other. However, other forces are also seeking to destroy them and gain the throne. The story is narrated by a boy named Salz, who lives with his older brothers, father, and grandmother on a farm outside town. Grandmother taught him to stand on his hands to help him clear the congestion from his lungs when his frequent bouts of coughing overtake him. This year has the rainiest growing season in memory, and the most rats. First the grazing animals sicken, then the townspeople. As the frightened people try everything to rid themselves of this pestilence, Salz finds himself in danger - why hasn't he shown any of the symptoms? 'Ella Enchanted' kept me up at night till the wee hours of the morning--I wanted to see what would happen! The first-person narrative is immediately endearing, capturing the personality of the main character in just a few lines. All the major characters are drawn and handled with care. My personal favorite was Ella's father--so heartless, yet so likable at the same time. Such a complex character rarely makes an appearance even in adult fiction. The romance between Ella and Char made me laugh and sigh by turns. While a deep romance featuring a fifteen-year-old girl is not exactly believable, if one succeeds in suspending disbelief there is a beautiful depiction of the relationship, yet without ever becoming overdone or sappy. I also liked the way Levine draws on elements from the original fairy tale while giving them a new twist--such as the obedience spell. The only problem I had... See less

I'd somehow missed "Rose Daughter," although I'm a fan of all of McKinley's books (and "Sunshine" and "the Hero and the Crown" are books I'd grab if my house was burning down. They're that wonderful). However, I had read her telling of "Beauty" years ago and loved it. Yet I was pleasantly surprised to find that I loved "Rose Daughter" even more. The two sisters to the protagonist are as fascinating, brave, and interesting in their own rights as she is, and the heroine is intelligent, courageous, and quietly extroardinary. My favorite aspects of this novel, though, were twofold: The roses, and the Beast. I'm not a plant person -- I look at a plant, and it promptly lets out a little sigh and falls over dead. As you can probably guess from the title, this is Rumpelstilzken, Donna Joe Napoli style. A young man makes a foolish boast so he can wed his sweetheart (with whom he has already been intimate) and steals a spinning wheel from an old woman so he can attempt to spin straw into gold. It works, but maims him, and the woman must marry another because she's pregnant with his child. She dies in childbirth, hating the evil little man she thinks he's become, he wanders off alone, and their daughter is left to be raised by her stepfather (who thinks he's her father.) Anyway, you know how the story goes and how it ends. This is a tale of pride, of love misplaced or trust gone wrong and deep loneliness. (10/16/07) Light of the Oracle is the third book Hanley has set in the same fantasy universe - and aside from that, the three books could hardly be more different, and all are excellent. The Seer and the Sword is a political-military novel, with relatively little magic and a lot of action. Healer's Keep is a save-the-world novel almost entirely about magical warfare between the protagonists and Ultimate Evil. And this one is an "academy" story about relationships among students and faculty at an institute organized to control prophecy. Others have summarized the plot; I'll just say that I've loved all three books, and that based on her start Hanley is fully worthy to be mentioned in the same breath as Tamora Pierce, Jane Yolen, Sherwood Smith, and Diana Wynne Jones. Comic superheroes who never achieved true fame mingle with rock 'n' roll stars who died young; dinosaurs roam the park at night. It is a setting with great potential. Unfortunately, Green ( Blue Moon Rising ) for the most part foregoes developing it in favor of simply adding to it, mixing in faeries, saints and other fantastic elements. As the novel begins, a serial killer stalks the town. It's up to mayor Rhea Frazier, the revenant Leonard Ash, rock 'n' roller Sean Morrison and James Hart, whose return to town has triggered an old prophecy, to unmask the killer and deal with an unprecedented attack on Shadows Fall by outsiders. The drama of their battle, however, is undermined by thin characterizations, stilted dialogue and scenes that read like farce. Princes, princesses, witches and wizards, firebirds and black jewels are all spun together by a master. Prince Ronan of Serre lost his wife and child, and now he tries to die by going off to fight in wars for his tyrant father. When returning from a battle, he accidently kills a chicken belonging to the witch Brume; the old woman curses him, but Ronan doesn't take it seriously. Yet when he returns home, his father reveals that he's betrothed Ronan (the only heir) to Princess Sidonie of Dacia, a small but magical kingdom. While Ronan broods about this, he sees a beautiful firebird pass by the castle, and is enspelled by it. See less
