I'll admit it, back in the early days, I was a real big fan of Peal Jam. They rocked, and , more importantly, they stood up for those less fortunate than middle America. Than I head the song 'Daughter' and I learned that Eddie didn't have sympathy for at least one disadvantaged group in America: The mentally handicapped. On that track he cruelly and heartlessly mocks the vocal affectations of those with mental disabilities, just to get a cheap laugh. I'll admit it, his impression is dead on: He totally sounds like a 'tard. But is it really appropriate to mock the mentally handicapped, particularly when one is involved in so many fashionable, liberal causes? Well, no. The time for fratboy humor is over, Mr. Vedder. Some of you are saying this is the greatest song ever? This has to be a mistake.... It's the 'where oh where can my baby be...' song isn't it? Bloody heck. This is the best you've heard? The first time i heard this was on some boring commercial radio station. I remember it distinctly because i actually laughed out loud as i heard it - not something that i do everyday... I thought it must've been some local singer getting radio play for a little bit of a career boost. Later, to my disgust, i find that its by the Pearl Jam dudes. Its fair enough though, to release a bad song. Everyone does that now and then, but to hear people saying its the 'best song ever'? Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready really did the job on this one. It is a catcher AND it will just continue to grow on you. It is an catcher and a grower! Most Pearl Jam songs needs to grow on you for you to find the exellence in them. Given To Fly is very strong live as well. Check ot the Milan version and the St. Louis version, Incredible. The B-sides here are "Pilate"(another song from Yield) and "Leatherman". It sounds great and I think they used it on a christmas vinyl as a gift for the fans in the fan club. Off he goes is a sad and moving song about loss and forgiveness. Its folk influenced guitar and filling bass lines make it sound like a Neil Young ballad. This song was one that touched me first when i heard "NoCode" but after a while it tends to become less moving. Its a great song in spite. This cd is an import and this cd is worth every single dollar because of "Dead Man" which is so dark and heart felt, that makes it one of the bands most unique songs... actually its more like an Ed song, therefore only pushed to b-side status.. This is a must have. The way its sang, is something you have never heard before, truly unique... its a requirement for any PJ fan... I recommend this cd strongly... Unlike the records before it (Ten and Vs.), Vitalogy moved a bit away from the frustrated arena rock the band was becoming known for, and the band started creating slower (but still angsty, depending on the song) pieces. ... But, to make a long story short... 1) Not For You - Rocking, and more attention-grabbing than the usual single ("THIS IS NOT FOR YOUUUU!!!", yells Eddie). Yes, it's mellower than Pearl Jam's other great hits, such as Jeremy and Even Flow... but who cares? It's still the same quality. Listen to the song thoroughly... especially from 2:08 to 2:36. True art. 2) Out of My Mind - Similar to several Alice in Chains songs and Nirvana's "You Know You're Right", this track is extremely well-done. This has been like the Golden Fleece to me since I got into Pearl Jam about 7 or 8 years ago. This is the only place you can find (that I know of) the version of "Even Flow" from the music video. The live/rerecorded versions of the first two singles Pearl Jam released are among the best music I have heard. Both of them far surpass their studio counterpart, and both can be found on this cd. this is an absolute must for any completist, or even if you just loved PJ's first record, Ten. Okay there are two versions of this cd. The first one is from '94 which not only has the live recordings of ANIMAL and JEREMY but also of Daughter that ends with an excerpt from Pink Floyd's song: Another Brick In The Wall. The second is the US updated version of the much more expensive import from '95 (That being this one). DAUGHTER is not included. What really got me pissed off was that I had no idea that the live recordings were actually taken from the well known '94 FOX THEATER CONCERT. My point is that the sound recording for that concert were horrible. I know this because the single for DAUGHTER includes a live version of YEllOW LEDBETTER that is for more superior in sound quality and it was taken from a '93 concert in Arizona. This cd is definetively not for those of you who are not PJ collectors. OF course Love Boat Captain is a wonderful song, and played live, it sounds even better... The keyboards just fill the entire atmosphere, and the message in the lyrics, can truly be felt. But since you can get "Otherside" on the "Save you" this cd is not worth it. In fact, if you want a live version of any of the new songs, for a couple of bucks more than the price of this cd you can buy one of the new official bootlegs, which are over 20 songs long. I own a couple of them myself and they sound better than the last official bootlegs. If you are a PJ collector, like i am, then there is nothing i can say to you. Youll get this cd like i did. Although i must admit that this is the first time that PJ put the exact same recorded b-side on separate singles, and seems kind of odd. But if you consider the fact that this is an import, it makes sense, since the save you single is an import in many countries. All in all the... See less

As fans, we should hope and pray that this becomes a viable proposition for our favorite bands to do. It is hard to put into words the value you get when you pick this up - two discs with minimal packaging for a great price. You're buying music, not a record studio's production of it. Anyways, this is exactly the type of show Pearl Jam is famous for. Fantastic music with personalized stories from front-man Eddie Vedder. McCready and Gossard sound amazing together, even when they completely flub "Alive" (how many times do you think they've played that song?).
