An entry into an already rather overcrowded market, Dude, Where's My Car? is a very dumb but exuberant comedy aimed fairly and squarely at the teen market. An attempt to recreate the classic feel of certain movies from the late 80s and early 90s, it centres around two hopeless individuals (Jesse and Chester) and their efforts to piece together the night before and, more importantly, find Jesse's car. The plot--such as it is, takes in many a convoluted turn with the introduction of transsexual strippers and aliens but still finds itself stretched thin over the course of the meagre 79 minutes. The film's aspirations are clear. With it's central duo and infuriating use of catchphrases it is almost a direct steal from Wayne's World and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, both of which are leagues ahead in terms of writing, performance and general style. This is visually one of the best movies I've ever seen. The director, Karyn Kusama, whom I never heard of before, did a great job of visual composition. The photography is also exquisite. Too bad the story and the plot are kind of weak. Charlize Theron does a very credible job as an action hero, but lets face it, this movie is all about looking great in tights and not about great acting. She definetely got the "looking great" aspect right. Of the HD DVD's I've watched so far, only King Kong matches it for color depth and detail. The Berlin and Potsdam locations shine thru. Those lucky enough to have visited this amazing city know how many more achitectural marvels await to be exploited in film. If you enjoy eye candy and can appreciate the beauty of architecture, then this film is for you. See less

A promising comedy that goes awry all too early, But I'm a Cheerleader concerns a misunderstood high school kid (Natasha Lyonne) whose parents send her to a harsh, homosexual-rehabilitation camp despite a lack of evidence that she's gay. Ruled with an iron fist by a fascist counselor (Cathy Moriarty), the clinic only drives Lyonne's character toward an attraction to a rebellious tomboy (Clea DuVall), though screenwriter Brian Wayne Peterson and director Jamie Babbit are curiously intent on keeping the two apart and depriving the audience of other comic possibilities. Meanwhile, hoary clichés abound: prancing boys, butch gays, lipstick lesbians. As summer encroaches, 16-year-old Manhattanite Finn Earl (Anton Yelchin) would love nothing more than to trek off to South America and spend the year's sun-drenched months near the equator, embarking on thrilling adventures with his estranged archaeologist father, whom he's never met. Alas, the bonds of family rein in tight when Finn's booze and coke-addled mother, the masseuse Liz (Diane Lane), cries out for help - and, in the process, unwittingly gets Finn arrested.
