In his new book The Honest Truth About Dishonesty: How We Lie to Everyone—Including Ourselves, Dan Ariely, professor of behavioral economics at Duke University, posits the notion that women who buy and wear fake designer accessories are more likely to steal, cheat, or lie than women who don't. The idea is that if someone is willing to buy a fake, thereby essentially stealing from a designer, and try to pass it off as real, that person is more disposed to seeing deception as acceptable in other facets of her life.
This makes perfect sense to me. If women are willing to support a counterfeiter and cheat the real designer in the process, it makes sense that they would be dishonest about other things.
I was thinking really does it apply to most people, and yes I agree if you can't have it, you don't need it, and anyways the people who know the designers you are wearing will also be able to tell if it's real I know I can ;)
It's an interesting idea but I think a lot of women (and men ;) ) who sport knockoffs do so naively, without a total awareness of the harm the counterfeit industry does. Does the author provide any evidence for his theory or did he just make it up?
Meh, I don't necessarily agree with this. I think people who buy knockoffs do so because they like the style and can't afford the price. I agree with @firetrucks that they are just naive about the harm it does and I don't see it as an ethical/psychological issue. When I was younger I definitely bought a couple knockoff purses because I didn't have a lot of spending $ and I wanted the style...I don't anymore because I prefer the quality of the real deal and know more about the counterfeit industry. I don't think I am liar, thief, or cheater and I never have been.
Great topic for discussion though!
