Longer Skirt Lengths: Fad or Flattering?

Telegraph pencil skirt in Super 120s

Longer hemlines started showing up on runways a few seasons ago and it looks like they're here to stay—at least for a while. While mid-calf skirts seem to have been left largely to fall fashions, we're still seeing below-the-knee lengths all over the Web. J. Crew's Telegraph pencil skirt is 27-inches long (five inches longer than its wildly popular No. 2 pencil skirt), falling well below the knee.

We want to hear your thoughts on the longer length. Do you think it's stump-ifying or flattering? Is it a look that's here to stay or a fad that'll be gone in a few seasons? Leave a comment and let us know!

  • i say the longer legs you have the more flattering this length will be Report Spam Posted by jenifor at 4:32 PM on 01/31/12

  • I'm all for longer hemlines. Knees are ugly. Heh. Report Spam Posted by cristina at 4:36 PM on 01/31/12

  • Not a fan of this look for some of us vertically challenged folk. Report Spam Posted by lmartinelli10 at 4:48 PM on 01/31/12

  • longer skirts seem to come and go, so while they may not be around long this time, they will probably be back again sometime in the future. I love them...for me, they look sophisticated...and I'm tall so I can pull them off easily. Report Spam Posted by ftw at 4:53 PM on 01/31/12

  • I'm super short so longer skirts don't always look good on me but I'm a huge fan of longer skirts on my taller friends. The style is classy, sophisticated and chic and so many gorgeous skirts of late have the longer hemline (think kate spade) Report Spam Posted by sweetshorty at 5:17 PM on 01/31/12

  • I like it. Very sophisicated and modest, which is something lacking in trends today Report Spam Posted by indiedesigns at 11:32 PM on 01/31/12

  • Flattering!! Report Spam Posted by uniquediva27 at 12:50 AM on 02/01/12

  • I think they're great just below the knee. If they cut off mid calf, on me at least, it's unflattering. I think it makes the calf look wider. Report Spam Posted by miss_daphne at 2:49 PM on 02/01/12

  • I love mid-calf skirts and dresses so much, I don't care if they make my legs look like tree stumps. I just love the look of that length. Report Spam Posted by cristina at 2:57 PM on 02/01/12

  • Flattering! Though I tend to go more a-line or circle skirt than pencil (though exceptions apply). I'm not even that tall (5'5) and I think it still works for me. :) Report Spam Posted by bellitude at 8:06 AM on 02/02/12

  • fad. Report Spam Posted by sammystaffa at 8:12 AM on 02/02/12

  • Flattering! Just about everything in fashion is popular, goes away & comes back (aside from a few exceptions). I think right below the knee is the most flattering. Once you get longer it depends on your leg length. Report Spam Posted by princezz1252 at 8:39 AM on 02/02/12

  • Knees are ugly. I say long is beautiful. Report Spam Posted by felicia7013 at 11:32 AM on 02/02/12

  • I'm one of Jehovah's Witnesses and I have a very hard time finding skirts that are modest and flattering, so I really like that they're making longer skirts now and I hope it's a style that's here to stay! Report Spam Posted by kalanthe at 5:24 PM on 02/02/12

  • I like this longer length it's very flattering!!! : } Report Spam Posted by kelsjax at 6:32 PM on 02/02/12

  • I'm on the shorter side so I kind of avoid them, and just noticed that too! hah only have 2 pencil skirts and they are old :) Report Spam Posted by xjoliexgreenx at 1:04 PM on 02/03/12

  • I like it but I don't love it. Report Spam Posted by clothesminded at 10:10 AM on 02/05/12

  • I'm not a huge fan of these skirts, mostly because they look horrible on me. Report Spam Posted by crayola09 at 10:30 AM on 02/05/12

  • I like hems that fall right smack in the middle of your knee...both modest and attractive at any age. On the other hand, I do like medium to full skirted dressy items that are tea length. However, did you know for many decades where the most popular hemlines are has been an accurate predictor of how well the country's economy is looking in the months to come? AND, the longer the hem length, the weaker the economy. So I would love to see some short skirts come from the designers, especially if they pair them with complementary tights. • I have a longer skirt that looks good, but I for some reason only like it with open toe shoes. It helps elongate the leg a little bit and helps prevent the long skirt from making me look stumpy. Report Spam Posted by sweans at 8:12 AM on 02/17/12

  • Pencil skirts only really work on certain body types, but they'll always be considered stylish. A-line skirts are universally flattering. Report Spam Posted by trappedinabay at 11:51 AM on 02/21/12
