  • At my work they have started not only a recycling program, but a composting program as well! I have been even more conscious about double checking before I just toss my waste into any old bin! I also have been recycling my magazines, and donating unwanted clothing and other items so that they can be re-sold or re-worn instead of being dumped into a giant landfill! I have also been jumping on the bus more, instead of driving my car! It is not only less expensive, but earth friendly! Every little bit helps mother earth! • In the past week I've stopped drinking bottled water and started recycling all my used cans, and it's so simple, I don't know why I didn't start sooner. Report Spam Posted by beaufortgirl19 at 1:17 PM on 08/10/09

  • I'm recycling like crazy at home, even if I have barely any room to separate everything. Good luck everyone! Report Spam Posted by mamor at 1:27 PM on 08/10/09

  • I've done a few things.. 1. I don't throw out old clothes any longer. I donate them. If they're not donatable, I cut them into strips and make rags. I've also sewn bedding for the local cat shelter out of my old towels.2. I use reusable bags when I shop.3. I recycle the trash in our home. 4. I also grow my own tomatoes and recently, strawberries. So I make compost from some of our kitchen scraps. Report Spam Posted by nefarious_cupcake at 1:33 PM on 08/10/09

  • I bring reusable bags to the grocery store. I recycle everything (living in San Jose makes it even more convenient because they don't require you to separate things). I donate a few bags of clothes each year. My brother runs his own hauling and recycling business so anything big and metal goes with him. Report Spam Posted by cristina at 1:47 PM on 08/10/09

  • My boyfriend and I turned our roof deck into an urban garden where we grow our own vegetables and fruit. If we can't grow it, we buy from our neighborhood green market. We also compost, recycle and carry our own bags, coffee mugs and water bottles everywhere. Report Spam Posted by cahlann at 2:03 PM on 08/10/09

  • We just replaced most of our regular light bulbs with energy saving ones to save electricity. We redid the weather stripping on our sliding glass door to improve the insulation of our house. We use reusable bags at the grocery store and recycle paper, plastic and aluminum to cut down on landfill waste. The whole family has their own Nalgene bottle so that we can reuse the water bottle. • I've gone paperless when it comes to paying bills. Not only is it a royal pain receiving pieces of paper in the mail every month, but it's also much more convenient receiving an email notice about an upcoming payment that's due. I've also been conscious about turning off the lights and unplugging cords when I'm not using them. Public transportation and I are best friends too- we meet five days a week! We know where we are getting are produce, mostly local and organic, going local is where it's at re:means of shipping goods (fuel,etc.). But this week she bought me a kitty mug, because I'm always drinking coffee on the go.....in throway paper cups, it's a no-no. That' 265x2=330 paper cups a year on little ole me here in New York City. No more, I'm carrying my kitty mug wherever I go! LOL! Report Spam Posted by barty1013 at 5:22 PM on 08/10/09

  • We take our own bags to the grocery, try to buy organic whenever we can, try to cut down on disposables, and have recently begun replacing our lighting with energy efficient bulbs. Every little bit helps, and we're trying to change a little at a time. Report Spam Posted by amwiles at 5:28 PM on 08/10/09

  • What do I do to go green? Hm, a lot of little things... I take my own bags to the grocery store, I buy organic food at local farmers markets and co-op, I recycle my trash and use only ecological supplies to clean my house and wash my laundry I try to dry most of my clothes on a clothes line rather then in a dryer. But first of all I talk out loud that being green it's very important for everyone of us! We have only one Planet and we should cherish and love it by taking care of all this little things... • We recycle everything that is recyclable, take things to Goodwill or freecycle. We have a corn burning furnace, we have solar where we can and are adding on to that, We reuse, we buy used. We drink out of peanut butter jars, we use rags (old towels and socks) instead of disposable cloths, we use 100% recycled paper and reuse it, we use 1/3 the light bulbs in our house, we have a compost, organic garden, we don't use chemicals in our yard or pool, we use benefical insects, we use beneficial flowers, we only wash dirty clothes, we flush less, we buy gas from companies that support Green efforts. My business is a Green business and I use wind energy and offset my footprint, I use drop shipment to avoid the extra leg of shipment to save of emissions and packaging. We use reusable bags and drinking bottles. We call companies and ask them to start making more Green choices. We use only non toxic products to clean our house, we don't use bleach. We buy energy efficient appliances. We repair instead of buying new wherever possible. We built our fence in our yard out of bamboo that we harvested ourselves. We are constantly working to be more Green. I feel the best way to make a difference is by being the change you want to see in the world. Report Spam Posted by itshiptobegreen at 7:48 PM on 08/10/09

  • For the past few years I have been going through an eco-evolution. I have been slowly changing things I do in my daily life to become more green. I started with buying water filters for my apartment - this allowed me to cut out the bottled water and save the plastic bottles from going into the landfills. I also switched all of my personal care products to more environmentally friendly ones, made an effort to eat as much organic food as possible, cut back on meat, started using reusable shopping bags, now buy recycled paper products and switched my cleaning products. I could go on - but I might run out of space. It's easy to make changes that benefit our planet if you take it one step at a time. Did I mention my fav color is purple :) Report Spam Posted by lissa2525 at 7:52 PM on 08/10/09

Call me a neo-hippie, I don't mind!Simple things from spearheading an effort to get a recycling program in my building (we don't have curbside pickup in our neighborhood), to turning off lights and unplugging appliances when not in use. I only drive when I really need to (working from home helps) and try to carpool or run all of my errands at the same time.I'm learning more everyday about how to reduce my carbon footprint, it's exciting to find new ways to treat our earth with the dignity and respect it truly deserves! Here are two of my favorite "green" products that I use on a daily basis:A Kitchen Compost that fits under kitchen cupboards (great for apartments and condo's):www.uncommongoods.com/item/item.jsp?itemId=18057Nix the paper or plastic and stash an envirosax in your purse. I live in an aprtment building which is great for all the magazines that go around- Re-read is the best freebie... Everyone benefits from a little effort in recycling, if only they try! • In my attempts to go green I have been adding recycled shoes such as Simple Shoes or organic shoes like TOMS on my wish list here on Kaboodle. I also have set Blackle.com as the home page to all computers the family owns. I no longer use harsh chemical based solutions for small problems such as acne and pet concerns. I try to incorporate all natural ingredients and use home made remedies. I also have been looking into organic cotton shirts and recyclable materialized computer cases. This year in school I would like to sport nothing, but organic and recycled apparel. Receiving these shoes I would promote Simple Shoes through wearing these shoes daily. I hope to show the kids in high school that brand names do not matter. Our planet and other living beings should be held at higher concern then costs and designer brand names. • I save all my Tim Horton cups, put my wet recyclables in them as I discard and when cups are full, place in a bag for the pic-up. During the recent garbage strike, I was one of the few who saved all my paper/glass/plastic stuff and happily, put it out today for the back-to-work garbagemen. I'm the only one at work who faithfully pulls paper out of garbage cans and puts it in the recycle boxes. Save our planet! Report Spam Posted by caringintoronto at 5:41 AM on 08/11/09

  • Where do I start...I have made many changes over the past couple of years and even set goals to change things. I have changed all light bulbs, vamped up my recycling, changed all cleaning products to eco friendly products, do not use antibacterial anything, buy reuseable shopping bags, not plastic bags, don't buy bottled water, buy recylced plastic toothbrushes, switched to recycled toilet paper and paper towels (trying to eliminate paper towels all together) Buy from local farmers markets or organic when possible, got my boyfriend more involved and now with baby on the way we have painted the nursery in no VOC paints and have been buying biodegradeable diapers and wipes and any other eco/baby friendly products. I have also set future goals so when we buy a house we can compost, garden and rain barrels. In attempt to get others involved I explain why I do what I do and try to convince people to try one thing and add little by little. Report Spam Posted by madiesades at 8:10 AM on 08/11/09

I also use little paper and recycle what I do use, including plastic, etc. I teach my son to recycle, too, and he's really caught on. We recently installed a water filter onto our kitchen faucet so that we can stop using so much bottled water. Now when we're on the go, we grab a reusable water bottle and fill it up! I even made sure that people at work recycle too by adding a recycling bin right at the front desk so when they walk in they can recycle what they've been using when they're finished. • I shop farmer's market all the time during the summer. Even though there's no recycling program in my neighborhood (without paying for it), I've been taking my recycling to my church where they recycle and use the funds towards purchase of a new church bus. I don't own a car so walking and taking the bus or the train is something I do every day. I have the energy efficient bulbs in my home. I've not been using an air conditioner unless it's over 90 degrees. I have a new furnace going to be installed before it turns cold to make it more energy efficient and to save money. My hot water heater is already energy efficient. I have a reusable water bottle that I use every day and my own insulated coffee mug and make my own mocha lattes at home. I have to print a lot of things because of my job so I use a lot of paper but I always buy recycled paper and I have my printer cartridges refilled instead of buying new ones. I get paper bags at the grocery store and reuse them, as well as having an insulated bag for frozen items. I wash all my clothes in cold water, using a special detergent for cold water. I don't have a dishwasher so I wash all my dishes by hand and I only fill the sink full of water when I have a lot of them to wash. I even tried planting some of my own veggies this summer in large pots. I don't have much of green thumb though but at least I tried. Is that going green enough for you? I will walk or ride my bike everyday. I will clean using eco firendly products instead of those chemical ones. I will stop using hairspray and other hair products that have lots of chemical, instead I will use natural products. I will buy products that are recycled. I will do community service that will help the earth . This is what I will be doing to go green. But last but not least , most importantly if I win the eco-chic Silk Satire sneakers that would be one of the things that i would do to go green. • I luv these shoes I'll tell you what I've done to help.I have planted quite a few gardens and trees at my house. We recycle our plastic bags, cans, all paper products, and we bring those reusable bags to the grocery store. I try to buy already recycled items and when I buy something that isn't I try to reuse that item when I'm done with it. For example a pair of jeans that were too short after a while I made into cute capris. I joined a group on facebook it's my "Save the Earth" group and I always post new ideas I find on how to conserve. Instead of using Google I use Blackle.com it's a search engine right from Google, but it uses 20% less energy then Google because Blackle uses a black background that uses less energy. At my house we use the efficient light bulbs, turn off water and lights when not in use, have solar lights outside, we catch rainwater for our plants, and constantly remind my friends and family on how important it is to help the Earth. Simple easy changes can help the Earth a lot. Remember reduce, reuse, and recycle. Report Spam Posted by prima1 at 6:17 PM on 08/11/09

  • Being green is fun and easy. Recently I have been looking at Brazil for inspiration. There is a Green campaign that uses humor to help save our planet and also wallets as there are economic hardships worldwide. One of their suggestions was to try reducing your toliet usage by taking advantage oif your shower time. Thats right, go in the shower while ya shower. Funny eh? But also very good. you could save up to 1,157 gallons of water annually according to http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/08/04/ap/strange/main5214517.shtml. Now, I also reduce reuse and recycle regularly. For example, my younger sister and I used cannisters that were empty (drink mix cannisters) to make bongo drums with other materials we had previously used. That was very fun. When we dont have a use for an item, l9ike old clothes or toys that dont fit, we donate to various organizations, one of which is a local run center that gives the items to local families in times of need, like last Christmas when we ran a "toy store"- it was all free items that were new to gently used and it really benefited alot of families. Another idea we use is composting, it reduces land fill waste and at the same time benefits our garden and reduces the amount of soil we need to buy thereby reducing the amount of plastic thaty ends up in a land fill. This one is really fun. Want to reduce phostphates and harmful chemicals in your home? I do, I use baking soda mix, water and vinegar as household cleaners. An added benefit is that baking soda is a natural stain remover. I am also a vegetarian and do not eat any cow/bovine products because in my junior year of high school we did an energy pyramid and I learned that I could cut down on the destruction to our planet that comes from eating cows. These are some of the ways I am going green as a member of GreenPeace and a citizen of Earth. If you have questions, message me;) Report Spam Posted by amandapanda91 at 7:07 AM on 08/12/09

Taking the bus or walking to class (hence the need for shoes!), I haven't used a plastic water bottle in years, and my mom even bought refill liquid soap so we don't have to buy individual plastic bottle every time we run out of soap, we just keep filling the old ones. I've always been passionate about nature, so much so that I've double majored in Environmental Studies and Biology. • Love the shoes! I've been going green by freecycling (as well as recycling). I started a group a few years ago in my city and now there's over 1000 members. Freecycling's reuse philosophy is to give away all the things you have stashed away collecting dust to the community so that people don't have to buy new items. When we moved we freecycled so many things like furniture, toys, clothes, shelving etc. We even got our baby's crib out of it. As well as freecycling, I reduce (we only have 1 car, and it's not an SUV), recycle (of course!) and reuse (try to fix old things like pillows covers and clothes to keep using rather than buy new). And have been bringing my own bags to the grocery store for years even before the cool fashionable ones came out. Report Spam Posted by mimibaby at 6:51 PM on 08/12/09

When our current CFLs and Incandescents burn out, we'll be forking over the cash for ultra efficient, clean, green LED bulbs; and I'll rest easy at night knowing less energy is being consumed to make, power, and dispose of my light bulbs; that I'm not contributing to excess waste in landfills; that I wont be dumping environmentally harmful toxins into my planet; and that I wont be exposing myself and the people (and pets) I love to the dangers of broken CFL bulbs. • I told my dad that "my boyfriend was on an eco-trip" because we are planting organic plants in our backyard. My dad thought i said "EGO-trip" and he said "You want me to come and kick his butt!!!" The funniest thing. I admire my boyfriend for teaching me about recycling and reusing. Another thing I will be doing is preparing Vegan meals for my wonderful boyfriend! Even though I am not a Vegan, I appreciate his self-control. Thank you for allowing me to enter to win those cute little purple kicks from Simple Shoes!!!! Report Spam Posted by pepperexpress at 4:40 PM on 08/13/09

  • My county is the number one in the NATION for recycling - I'm definitely doing my part! I recycle everything I possibly can - soda cans, bottles, especially clothes. I've been experimenting with upcycling clothes that don't fit anymore, and donating as much as I can! Report Spam Posted by rocketstail at 6:47 PM on 08/13/09

  • i make sure to recycle everything that can be at home. i bought a water bottle to take to college with me to cut down on the plastic. i use my old magazines for collages and recycle them. all my old clothes are given to charity or my younger cousin. i make sure to use my green bags every time i go shopping! I also didn't buy any new notebooks for school- i ripped out all the usable pieces in old ones and put them into binders!these shoes are rockin'. Report Spam Posted by megohhh at 7:23 PM on 08/13/09

  • We recycle as much of our paper, can, plastic and food scraps that we can. We try to do all of our errands at once to use less gas, use reusable shopping totes for shopping, buy used items and re-purpose old stuff, grow some of our own veggies, keep a flock of chickens out back for our own eggs, changed all of our light bulbs t energy saving ones, only wash laundry in cold water, take quick showers instead of baths, unplug appliances and electric gadgets when not in use.Love those purple shoes! • Going green hasn't gotten over complicated at our house. It's simply recycling using reusable Target bags for groceries and simply turning off things we don't use. We haven't always done this but my boys are growing up green.Purple is my favorite color. The shoes are awesome. Report Spam Posted by leebo1010 at 10:28 PM on 08/13/09

  • I make my own chemical free cleaning products and i use cloth bags when I am shopping. I also turn off lights when I am not using them. Report Spam Posted by spiritoflove at 12:05 AM on 08/14/09

  • Those shoes are adorable! I try to stay green by making simple choices every day - recycling and/or reusing everything I can, washing clothes in cold water & drying on a clothesline, using CFL light bulbs, unplugging appliances when not in use, etc. I try to walk or bike everywhere I can, and this year I started my own organic vegetable garden and compost bin. • Recycling of course, but I re-use, re-use, re-use. Give old things new life and a new purpose. Think outside the box. Also, donate any old unwanted items. Pass it on for someone else to use instead of throwing it away. Report Spam Posted by robynhorton at 7:30 AM on 08/14/09

  • I use a steel water bottle daily, recycle the crap out of everything in the house and use my own bags when I shop. I even try to fix clothes and shoes with crafting if something is just not right anymore. :-) Report Spam Posted by choochoo428 at 7:33 AM on 08/14/09

  • cdziuba@aol.com To go Green I declared NO MORE disposable party goods. I refuse to buy any more disposable paper plates, napkins, decorations, or plastic cups and cutlery. We now used regular dishes. That's one of my little ways I've gone green. Report Spam Posted by cdziuba at 7:39 AM on 08/14/09

  • I always look for small things that add up to big impacts, using the most energy-efficient options. I reduce: reduce the amount of water i use, reduce the amount of useless junk i buy, etc. I reuse everything: like an empty kleenex box i reuse and stuff plastic grocery bags (i use envirosax mostly, but sometimes need the plastic) in it to be reused for whatever i might need. This fall, my daughters and I have decided that instead of the school bus, we will ride bikes everyday the weather is agreeable- healthy alternatives! :) i would love to see my little city embrace alternative commuting!! i love farmers markets and try to buy locally whenever possible (support small businesses!) • I reuse the coffee cups I collect when I'm tooling around during the day. Also, we've been recycling for years - though, interestingly, we don't have to separate everything thoroughly as we used to. Fine. And I donate clothes, books, CDs, etc. Craigslist works wonders in this way, at least! Report Spam Posted by jak25 at 12:59 PM on 08/17/09

  • Going green has been something I've been committed to for quite some time now.I recycle all of my plastics, glass, and aluminum... You pay for all that soda and water, why not get something back? :)I reuse cups, plates, bowls, utensils... why waste paper and/or water cleaning those things.I only water my lawn twice a week to save water. It's turning brown, but hey I'm helping the environment.Goodwill is a good friend of mine. I donate all of my unused clothing, shoes, and accesories to those who are less fortunate.I believe giving, rather than gaining, makes the world go round. I feel that if I can make at least one person think twice about wasting products, then I've done my part. Report Spam Posted by nickiiiii at 6:11 PM on 08/18/09
