An Italian philosopher and mathematician, Donato Rossetti (1633–1686) published studies of natural phenomena, including La Figura della Neve (Figures of Snow) in 1681. One of the earliest publications devoted to classifying the shape of snow crystals, a first edition of this work is now in the Museum’s collection. In this volume, Rossetti describes and illustrates what he considers the recurring principal forms of snowflakes, including rosette and arabesque shapes. The images are decidedly stylized, but each snowflake is faithfully depicted with six points, as seen in nature. Such renderings became a source for later designers who looked to early published material for basic ornamental patterns. Our earrings are based on one of Rossetti’s snowflake designs in La Figura della Neve. As in the original drawing, the six points of the snowflake are formed by the fleur-de-lis motif. See less
