--- interactive artist daniel rozin works in a very particular artistic milieu, making mirrors from unreflective surfaces. one of his creations, 'the wooden mirror' is a testament to his skill in this area. the mirror uses 830 square pieces of wood which are hooked up to an equal number of small motors which move the wooden blocks according to a built in camera. the camera picks up movement in light and somehow transfers the signal to the wood. the result is an eerie representation of reality depicted in tiny wooden pixels. since building 'the wooden mirror' rozin has experimented with a number of other materials. http://www.smoothware.com/danny via fun forever See less

Yesterday I came across a slightly mysterious website — a collection of Polaroids, one per day, from March 31, 1979 through October 25, 1997. There’s no author listed, no contact info, and no other indication as to where these came from. So, naturally, I started looking through the photos. I was stunned by what I found. In 1979 the photos start casually, with pictures of friends, picnics, dinners, and so on. Here’s an example from April 23, 1979 (I believe the photographer of the series is the man in the left foreground in this picture): By 1980, we start to figure out that the photographer is a filmmaker. He gets a letter from the American Film Festival and takes a photo on January 30, 1980: Some days he doesn’t photograph anything interesting, so instead takes a photo of the date. Update: this was an incorrect guess; see the bottom of this post for more info on these date-only pictures. Not sure what prompted me to do this one, maybe the Level 5 water restrictions we now have? Possibly some photos I was looking at the other day. Anyhoo, it came to me as I was going to bed and I just had to work on it the next day. The text on the back of it reads... 'drought relief... An entire country, grinding to a halt, waiting for the drought to break. Searching the skies for a sniff of moisture, praying for even the smallest drops to fall. Remembering water aplenty, before the earth turned dry and the disappearing green mask revealed the red dust below. Optimisim that the glittering fields will one day return so that we may practice such harsh lessons learned.' The background is a piece of embroidery canvas painted by hand (quite literally, I used my hands rather than a brush!) with felt and buttons stitched on top. The sculpture is located in Terminal 5 in the atrium hall which leads to the British Airways First Class Lounges. The brief from British Airways was open and simple: to create a signature piece that will mark the entrance of the First Class Lounges and signify the transition between the busy shopping floor and the calm and serenity of the lounges. We started to work on the metaphor of clouds as one’s flies, and the contrast which exists between the busy, hectic airport experience, and the calm, luminous and ethereal world which we discover as we fly through this dense layer. Another of our inspiration came from the old electromagnetic flip-dots which were used in railways and airport signs from the mid 70s. Those signs, with their characteristic flicking noise which instantly reminds us of travel, represent to us a golden age of technology, when analogue and digital started to merge. I was recently fortunate to be in touch with artist Jennifer Maester, who for a number of years has mesmerized us with her sculptures. I asked her if I could interview her for the blog. Not only was she happy the communicate, but we also got to see some very new work of hers. REUBENMILLER: Please tell us a little bit about yourself! Jennifer Maestre: I'm a late bloomer as an artist. I went to Mass College of Art in my 30's, and majored in Glass. Before that, I'd always done some type of creative project, but never full time. I'm basically self taught as far as what I do now, they don't teach my type of pencil art in school. (more interview and images after the jump) RM: What mediums do you use for creating your art and objects? JM: For now, I am using mostly pencils. The sculptures are made by drilling holes in one inch long sections of pencils, and sewing them together using a sculptural beading technique called 'peyote' stitch. A Woman of the World Ruth Orkin 10 January - 9 February 2002 A Woman of the World is an exhibition of photographs by legendary American photographer Ruth Orkin, including unforgettable images of New York, Hollywood and Europe, taken during the 1940s, 50s and 60s. The daughter of silent movie star Mary Ruby, Ruth Orkin grew up in the cinema-saturated Hollywood of the 1920s and 30s. The idea of telling a story through pictures became her lifelong passion, but instead of following in her mother's footsteps, her destiny lay on the other side of the camera. Ever hungry for new subjects, the eighteen year old budding photographer hit national headlines whilst making a solo bicycle trip from Los Angeles to the 1939 World's Fair in New York. Ruth Orkin's mother was a movie actress and although Ruth was born in Boston she grew up in Hollywood during its heyday. Given a camera at 10, she was 12 when she developed her first pictures, and soon began to photograph movie celebreties. She worked as a messenger for MGM, but soon left as she wanted to be a cinematographer and the union there would not accept women. Orkin moved to New York in 1943, taking pictures of children and working as a nightclub photographer. Soon she was working for magazines such as Life, Look, Horizon and Ladies Home Journal, becoming known particularly for her portraits of musicians such as Leonard Bernstein. In 1950 she took a trip to Israel and lived on a kibbutz for severl months, befre leaving to tour Europe. In Florence she photographed her classic image 'American Girl in Italy', still a best-selling poster, and she also photographed in Venice, Rome, Paris and London.
