Anyone planning a summer vacation in Saskatchewan? As you know, we have a slight dollhouse fetish so even though this art installation is a few years old, we thought you'd get a kick out of it. Canadian artist Heather Benning transformed an abandoned farmhouse into a life-sized dollhouse. The worn exterior of the two-story structure was largely left untouched except for the replacement of one exterior wall with Plexiglass to provide a voyeuristic look into the home akin to a typical dollhouse. Benning has decorated the inside with furnishings from the 1960s, the decade in which the farmhouse was abandoned. The Dollhouse was finished in 2006 and we aren't able to determine if it's still on view. If you're in Saskatchewan, swing by and find out - it's located off of Highway 2 near Sinclair. Here's the 365 photo I skipped (from day 307), a big file of finished sunflower brooches...Taking that photo this afternoon prompted me to finally list a sunflower over on Dawanda, and to give my Dawanda shop a little bit of overdue attention (translating a few more things, making up a bag of items ready to list over the next few weeks, etc). Yesterday (day 308) my crafty task was making lots of felt flower hairpins ready for our evening out. I was wearing a flame red dress with a floral print and wanted something really bold for my hair to match it... so I thought, why not make something out of felt? We made sun jars using these instructions by Cre8tor at Instructables: Home-made Sun Jar. It's based on the Sun Jar design by Tobias Wong. These notes are what we learned along the way. The short version: - Ikea Slom jar, smallest size, about $3 - single Malibu brand solar garden light, about $10, from Lowes (see notes below for pictures of the specific one as there are a few variables) - glass frosting spray - some Blue Tak or sticky stuff Unassable the Ikea jar and spray the bottom half with glass frosting spray. Get the solar panel and battery pack out of the solar garden light and mount it on the underside of the jar lid (see below for specifics). Reassemble the jar and you're done. The long version: The guts of the homemade sun jar are made using a solar garden light. These can be found at hardware and garden stores, and there are lots of types to choose from. Refer to photo for color and design placement. Prewash all fabrics to remove sizing. Do not use fabric softener in the washer or dryer. Apron: 1. Measure and cut a 19” x 33” piece of background fabric for skirt. Pin waistband pattern on remaining background fabric and cut out two. 2. From accent fabric, measure and cut a 9” x 33” strip for lower band and four 36” x 4 ½” strips for ties. 3. To create ties, sew two strips, right sides together, angling at one end and leaving one end open. Repeat for other tie. Trim seam then turn inside out and iron smooth. Topstitch around edge. 4. Finish sides of apron skirt by folding over ¼” then again, and sew in place. Iron smooth. 5. Dilute some of the paint then blend the top and bottom sections in the middle with the diluted paint (Figure A). 2. On the sheet of plywood, sketch out a design of a tree (or any other design you might want). 3. Using a jigsaw, carefully follow your sketch, cutting out the shape drawn on the plywood (Figure B). 4. Glue the cut shape onto the painted sheet of plywood. 5. Once it is dry, drill 24 small holes on various branches (Figure C). 6. Thread the twinkle light bulbs through the backs of the holes. 7. Attach an extension cord, plug it in and watch it light up your room! See less
