(06/11/07) The great state of Alaska is served by two railroads -- the Alaska Railroad and the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway. The Alaska Railroad is the busier of the two. Its two routes shuttle summer sightseers between Seward and Anchorage and Anchorage, Denali and Fairbanks. The state-owned railroad also offers weekend service between Anchorage and Fairbanks in the winter. The White Pass & Yukon Route railway, based in Skagway, is a popular excursion for cruise-ship passengers. The historic route, which echoes the trip taken by stampeders during the Klondike gold rush of the late 1890s, crosses into Canada and returns to Skagway two or three times a day during the cruise-ship season.See less

(06/11/07) Camping in Alaska puts vacationers right in the middle of gorgeous scenery, where the fishing is good and where activities abound. Tent and RV/motorhome campgrounds are found all along Alaska's highway system of paved and gravel roads. Look for parkland campgrounds near the national and state parks and in many places in the Tongass and Chugach national forests. Campgrounds are even near downtown of Anchorage and Fairbanks, and a short walk from the downtowns in Seward, Valdez and Homer, Skagway, Haines, Talkeetna, Soldotna and Kenai. Many campgrounds have amenities such as stores and showers. Often, the campgrounds are also RV-friendly, with electrical and water hookups and sanitary dumps. Top-notch hiking, rafting, kayaking, fishing, glaciers and historical and cultural exhibits may be nearby. Of course, you should expect to see wildlife anywhere in the state. And for people who come to Alaska to see the wild land, there's plenty of that, too. In many places, all you have to do is...See less

(06/11/07) There's still gold in Alaska's hills and streams -- and you can have some of it with a little work. You may pan for gold for free in a number of places without the danger of being shot as a claim jumper. For example, people with a gleam in their eye can pan the beach east of Nome; several streams in the Interior, including the one where the Fairbanks gold rush began; several streams in Southcentral Alaska, including the Kenai Peninsula; in places along the Dalton Highway; and in some streams in Southeast. Some companies that charge for tours of towns and mining areas also have panning areas, complete with gold pans and soil that sometimes is salted with "color." Pans, shovels and loupes can be bought in mining supply shops and discount stores. As you're panning and sifting through the muck, remember that nothing that glitters is gold. You're looking instead for a gleam. Panning: How to and where to Here are some links to maps and how-to information: * Kenai Peninsula: U.S. Geological...See less

(06/11/07) Summary: The trail starts with a wooden staircase and switchbacks through hemlock until reaching the alpine tundra at Blueberry hill. The last few hundred feet are steep & rocky. The views are great from the top of the 3550 ft peak. On clear days Mt. McKinley and Mt Redoubt can easily be seen. If so desired a person can continue along the ridge to the southeast to the next two peaks, elevations 3658 ft. and 4111 ft. During the summer and winter solstice the Mountaineering Club of Alaska holds overnight camp-outs on the summit, despite the lack of water. Rated easy-moderate due to the elevation gain in the short distance and bad trail conditions near the top. The trail holds several potential hazards. Exercise extreme caution as you approach the summit. Several hikers have been seriously injured after slipping on the loose rocks and falling off the side. Stay between the markers that are set near the summit. Novices may have problems. Not recommended for small children. Trailhead: Drive...See less

(06/11/07) We are happy to teach you the techniques of gold panning with gold guaranteed in every one of our paydirt buckets. We have a variety of sizes for sale. Larger buckets have more gold flakes and the two largest sizes (Fort Knox and Peter Strong) have gold nuggets. * Sunrise bucket - $3.00 * Klondike bucket - $5.00 * Motherlode bucket - $10.00 * Fort Knox bucket - $20.00 * Peter Strong Special bucket - $50.00 How does gold panning work? Gold is much heavier than ordinary sand, nineteen times heavier than an equal amount of water, therefore it sinks to the bottom of the pan before the dirt settles. We will show you how to seperate the sand, rocks and dirt from the gold using the old time gold miner's technique. With the right swirling motion gold will stay on the bottom while you wash away the dirt. When you see all your gold we'll help you put it into a vial of water and seal it for you to take home. The children really get a kick out of learning how to pan for gold and getting to take...See less
