Then she planted the moss in a bath mat made of decay free foam. She calls her living bath mat Moss Carpet and so far, it is my favorite green find of the year. The Moss Carpet was a project designed by La Chanh during her studies. According to the description the, " bathroom carpet is made of imputrescible foam called plastazote. Each cell welcomes a piece of moss (ball moss, Island moss, forest moss). The humidity of the bathroom and the drops flowing from the body, water the mosses. This vegetable carpet procures a great feeling to your feet." So, when you step out of the shower onto the Moss Carpet to dry your feet you are actually stepping on moss. Researchers at McMaster University in Ontario have grown light-absorbing nanowires that can absorb more energy from the sun than the silicon ones. The challenge for the researchers is to improve the nanowires' efficiency without bringing up the cost. Can they do it? The research team, led by Ray LaPierre, a professor in the university's engineering physics department, has three years and $600,000 to try to achieve this goal. If they succeed the nanowires will be more efficient (about 20 % -40% efficiency). This will also allow solar panels to be inexpensive and flexible hopefully making it more affordable for consumers. The nanowires contain several multiple layers of materials including: gallium arsenide, indium gallium phosphide, aluminum gallium arsenide, and gallium arsenide phosphide. In the past, when I packed my daughter's lunch I tried my best to use reusable containers as much as possible, but it proved to be a bit of a challenge and not always as environmentally friendly or as convenient as I hoped. The Wrap-N-Mat has given me a longer lasting eco-friendly alternative to Tupperware, sandwich baggies and foil paper. In my house is difficult to keep track of Tupperware, though I like its sturdiness. One day the tops are all organized next to their matching bottoms. The next day I'm looking everywhere for a top to fit a bottom, but there are none to be found and I am left frantic to find a container to hold individual food items in my daughter's lunch bag and not be late for school. The person at fault will remain nameless, but I'm sure everyone has someone like this at home. The bag is made of bright orange durable woven nylon and has a spider web design printed on the bag. The bag is easily visible at night, and holds 20lbs worth of candy. I'm not so sure this is a good thing in regards to our children's' health, but I guess it wont be so bad if it's 20lbs of eco-friendly or organic treats. Although there are a few shoe recycling programs in existence shoes often can't be recycled because of the adhesives used in their construction. Designer Ben Chappell hopes to changes this with Think. It is Ben Chappell's innovative thinking that has helped him design Think, a shoe prototype, which will allow consumers to recycle the shoe as well as exchange parts of it for newer or cooler ones. The general idea of Think is to create the shoe so that it is attached with mechanical locks instead of adhesive. The mechanical locks would allow the consumer to easily take the shoe apart and replace and recycle any part that is worn out (ex. the heel of the shoe) or no longer fashionable.
