(12/20/11) Amazon.com Review "What is the use of a book," thought Alice, "without pictures or conversations!" Readers who share Alice's taste in books will be more than satisfied with The Annotated Alice, a volume that includes not only pictures and conversations, but a thorough gloss on the text as well. There may be some, like G.K. Chesterton, who abhor the notion of putting Lewis Carroll's masterpiece under a microscope and analyzing it within an inch of its whimsical life. But as Martin Gardner points out in his introduction, so much of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass is composed of private jokes and details of Victorian manners and mores that modern audiences are not likely to catch. Yes, Alice can be enjoyed on its own merits, but The Annotated Alice appeals to the nosy parker in all of us. Thus we learn, for example, that the source of the mouse's tale may have been Alfred Lord Tennyson who "once told Carroll that he had dreamed a lengthy poem about fairies, which began...See less

(12/20/11) From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. [Signature]Reviewed by Neil GaimanAlmost 10 years before his The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen took many of the figures of Victorian popular fiction on a remarkable romp, Alan Moore, in collaboration with underground artist Melinda Gebbie, began Lost Girls, with a similar, although less fantastical, conceit: that the three women whose adventures in girlhood may have inspired respectively, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Peter Pan and Wendy and the Wizard of Oz, meet in a Swiss hotel shortly before the first World War. Wendy, Dorothy and Alice, three very different womenone jaded and old; one trapped in a frigid adulthood; the last a spunky but innocent young American good-time girlprovide each other with the liberation they need, while also providing very different (and, for this is a pornography, very sexual) versions of the stories we associate with them. We go with the girls, in memory, to the incidents that became the Rabbit Hole, Oz...See less

(12/20/11) About the Author Ernest Miller Hemingway was born in Chicago in 1899 as the son of a doctor and the second of six children. After a stint as an ambulance driver at the Italian front, Hemingway came home to America in 1919, only to return to the battlefield - this time as a reporter on the Greco-Turkish war - in 1922. Resigning from journalism to focus on his writing instead, he moved to Paris where he renewed his earlier friendship with fellow American expatriates such as Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein. Through the years, Hemingway travelled widely and wrote avidly, becoming an internationally recognized literary master of his craft. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954, following the publication of The Old Man and the Sea. He died in 1961. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.See less

(12/20/11) How can you even review the ultimate pirate book of all time? I read it when I was 9 and loved it. I read it again when I was 34 and loved it again! (Actually, I read it several times between, as well.) Long John Silver is arguably one of the most Macchiavellian characters you will ever find between the covers of a book. (I'm mainly reviewing it to raise the average rating. Anyone who thinks this book is boring has to have a screw loose!) From the arrival of the mysterious Billy Bones, to the attack on the inn, to the sea voyage, to the mutiny, to the battle for the island, to the treasure hunt, even to the final fate of John Silver, this book is a stunning rollercoaster of suspense and adventure! I'd give it ten stars if I could. Here's a bit of information you other readers might enjoy: the meaning of the pirates' song-- Fifteen men on a dead man's chest Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum! The real-life pirate, Edward Teach (Blackbeard the Pirate) once marooned 15 of his men on a small...See less

(12/20/11) Oscar Wilde was a man before his time, and a genius that burned out too young. He died at the age of 44, but he has written some of the best literature that we are privileged to possess. "The Portrait of Dorian Gray" is one of my favourite stories, so I thought I should read his short stories too. Well, his genius is apparent in these stories too. Some of his stories seem to be social commentaries that he uses like sword to poke fun at what is sacred in his society, but they are truly funny as well. He explores all forms of love, hate, greed and goodness in these stories. My own particular favourite was "The Canterville Ghost". Wilde's interpretation of American savoir faire is hilariously funny. His fairy tales are truly beautiful, and each one has a special message to impart. I heartily recommend reading these stories. Wilde is unsurpassable.See less

(12/20/11) Having a Kindle helps one to discover books which otherwise would certainly have been missed. This is one of them. It's the tale of a rather bookish "gentleman" who is virtually press-ganged to work on a sailing ship. Through vicious hardship he is faced with the choice of survival (and in the process compromising his morality) or almost certain death. The main villain, if you will, is the Captain of the ship, who's physical strength and presence is overwhelming. Some of the language is a little archaic, but the Kindle dictionary didn't let me down. It's well worth the read. Get past the first ten pages, and you may find it hard to put down.See less

(12/20/11) Amazon.com Review This beautiful, 868-page leather-bound volume contains a delightful collection of stories from one of history's most beloved children's authors. Lewis Carroll's stories are still as fresh and appealing as when they were first published more than a century ago. John Tenniel's original illustrations accompany the Alice stories and bring to life the wildly popular characters so well known to us all: the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, and a passel of others. Carroll, one of 11 children, knows his audience well. His stories--clever, provocative, and bizarre--capture the imaginations of children worldwide. Though a prolific storyteller from childhood, he went on to become a mathematician, a fact evidenced by the Tangled Tales serial, which contains a mathematical equation in each installment. Other stories included in this collection are "The Hunting of the Snark," which was composed backward, in a sense, when inspiration for the tale came by way of the...See less

(12/20/11) Today, Edgar Allan Poe is best known for his rather macabre Gothic writings, but during his lifetime, he was a respected literary critic who, on the side, wrote brilliant short stories and poetry, and developed the modern detective/mystery genre. Countless authors and mystery fans owe Poe a great debt for his contributions to American literature. Canterbury Classics is proud to present the stories and collected works of Edgar Allan Poe in this handsome, leather-bound volume. Fans will discover some of his most famous works, including "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," "The Purloined Letter," "The Tell-Tale Heart," and "The Pit and the Pendulum," as well as some of his notable poems, including "The Raven" and "Lenore." These masterpieces get the royal treatment, and are printed on high quality ivory paper with gilded edges.See less
