There are more than 1 million nonprofits in the U.S., and though most are tiny--80% of nonprofits who file with the Internal Revenue Service gross less than $1 million a year, estimates software consultancy Exponent Partners--they spend about $43 billion on information technology. With about a quarter of that likely going to software, that's a market of some $11 billion. A good chunk of that goes to the usual suspects, namely Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ), whose Office suite works regardless of whether a company is trying to do good or make a buck, and some to enterprise players like Oracle (nasdaq: ORCL - news - people ). Search giant Google says it has purchased the company that makes Writely, a Web-based word processing feature. Writely is, simply put, a word processor embedded into a Web browser. It's still in a nascent beta form and is no longer freely distributed; "it's far from perfect," Jen Mazzon writes in her newly revealed role as a member of the Google Writely team. Despite the drawbacks, it apparently fits perfectly into Google's plans. While better known for its consumer search engine, Google is mounting a significant effort to win over office computer desktops. Its earlier release of a Google Pack of online features, and a deal with Sun Microsystems to deliver the digitized goods was a step in this direction. See less

Google recently launched its Calendar service, and the response has been mostly positive. But those who just see it as a new competitor to Outlook (or any other calendar app) are missing the point. Its tight integration with the Web, its ability to link in with Google Maps, its ability to automatically sense events in Gmail and its incredible ease of use—check out the Quick Add feature if you're looking for a "gee whiz!" event of the day—put it head and shoulders above the competition. But the feature (as reported by Charlene Li of Forrester) that's really going to break new ground is its upcoming open API. And it's a lot more than a doorway to cool hacks: It's a brilliant marketing move by Google, the first glimmer of an emerging digital ecosystem at work, and perhaps yet another indicator that Microsoft is becoming increasingly irrelevant.
