You are purchasing 3 oz (approx 111 yards) of soft and fluffy lilac merino and dark purple bamboo yarn that was handspun last week. It is roughly worsted weight yarn. (11/25/08) Inspired by lilacs, this handdyed yarn is mostly shades of purple with a splash of orange-y gold. This unusual yarn is handspun from recycled banana fibers. The fibers are collected by women in Nepal from the remnants from the sari weaving looms. They sort it by color and handspin the fibers and sell it through fair trade co-ops as a way to earn extra money. Banana fiber was extracted from banana trees (bananière , in French)-mostly their stems and leaves. When it comes to my home, I dye it in soft shades that aren't offered by the co-op. The yarn is shiny and soft, but with a bit of fuzz. Bananiere is an incredibly strong yarn and will knit into beautiful (and unique) bags and shawls. It can be substituted for Silk Sari yarns in patterns such as Knitty's Unbiased (http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEfall04/PATTunbiased.html). In the middle I will place a bezel with a 4mm Sapphire inside. The band is 1/2" wide. It will be treated with a patina to bring out this intricate design.
