By Luke Anderson The floppy disk has been dead for years now. I still remember working in retail and having to explain to customers why their new computer wouldn’t include a floppy drive. I believe the last time I had to use one was when I installed XP on a SATA drive. If you miss the sight of those ugly black disks, you could always get these Floppy CD-R discs. What’s interesting here is that someone has decided to take a dying format and disguise it as a dead piece of technology. I’m not necessarily implying that we’re going to stop seeing CD’s in the near future, but I can count the number of times I’ve burned a CD in the last year on one hand. I usually just copy files onto a flash drive, or email the file if it’s small enough. With their relatively small (200MB) size and $10 per disc price tag, they aren’t good for much more than nostalgia. See less

Given its design and the position of the actual camera lens, you’re pretty limited as to where you can actually do your spying (”hey! why is there a calculator taped to the wall of the changing room?”) but if you have a problem with office theft, or would like to covertly record a business meeting, it’s got you covered. It uses a 1/3 inch CMOS color sensor that provides a usable resolution of 320×240, and it will broadcast the video image up to 15 meters away allowing it be monitored with the included 2.4 inch LCD display. The 128Mb of storage is upgradeable via SD cards (though there’s a 2GB limit) and it also features a basic microphone with a usable range of about 4 meters. That was seriously one of my favorite mods, simply from the picture of a bear’s body sticking out of a USB port. Well, someone has done the unthinkable. They’ve decided to mass-produce a similar drive and sell it to the public. The drive looks like an ordinary teddy bear, but simply rip off its head, and you’ve got yourself a 1GB flash drive. I have to say that I’m disappointed in the 1GB capacity, but I’m willing to overlook it due to just how awesome the drive itself is. If you have a morbid sense of humor, then by all means pick one of these up for $17. See less

By Luke Anderson It always fascinates me that you can take something, make it look old and it’s suddenly cool because it’s “retro.” Aside from the ability to create mix tapes, there wasn’t anything cool about the cassette tape that I ever saw. This Cassette MP3 player would probably be the closest thing to cool that the cassette tape will ever get. What makes this device cool is that it can act as both a stand-alone MP3 player and as a cassette tape. If you actually still have a stereo that takes the old tapes, you can put this in and it will play just the same. It’ll set you back $40, which is a bit steep considering the fact that you’ll need to supply your own SD card to store the music. See less

Since my old camera is all but retired, I have a couple of decent-sized SD cards that are just sitting around not being used. I’d like to think I could utilize their storage capacities in a new camcorder, but they’re not that big, or fast. Now if I had one of these new Panasonic 32GB SDHC cards, it would be a whole different story. The huge card won’t go on sale until April, but it is well worth the wait. The card is labeled a class 6, which has transfer rates of 20MB per second making it the fastest card at this capacity. And in keeping with that theme here’s a new way to enjoy audio cassettes, without having to deal with their craptastic sound quality. The MIXA is basically a 1GB flash drive that’s been integrated into an audio cassette shell. The real appeal though comes with the MIXA website which allows you to interactively design a custom label for the tape. You can choose from a collection of pre-existing designs, which still offer a bit of customization, or upload your own images and graphics. Once the design is completed and the finished USB cassette arrives you can then load it up with your own ‘mix tape’ of MP3s. So in an attempt to reach out to both analog and digital music fans at the same time, a German company has created a new format called VinylDisc with a CD on one side, and a vinyl recording on the other. While the CD side can hold the typical 70 minutes of music, due to the size limits of the compact disc the vinyl side can only hold around 3 minutes. A rock band called Fightstar will actually be releasing its next single on the VinylDisc format, though to be honest its record company (Gut) admits the limited run of 3,000 copies is more of a gimmick than anything. However Guy Holmes, the chairman of Gut, says that if VinylDisc actually proves popular they’ll gladly try it out with other bands as well.
