(01/15/09) By Luke Anderson The floppy disk has been dead for years now. I still remember working in retail and having to explain to customers why their new computer wouldn’t include a floppy drive. I believe the last time I had to use one was when I installed XP on a SATA drive. If you miss the sight of those ugly black disks, you could always get these Floppy CD-R discs. What’s interesting here is that someone has decided to take a dying format and disguise it as a dead piece of technology. I’m not necessarily implying that we’re going to stop seeing CD’s in the near future, but I can count the number of times I’ve burned a CD in the last year on one hand. I usually just copy files onto a flash drive, or email the file if it’s small enough. With their relatively small (200MB) size and $10 per disc price tag, they aren’t good for much more than nostalgia. See less

And in keeping with that theme here’s a new way to enjoy audio cassettes, without having to deal with their craptastic sound quality. The MIXA is basically a 1GB flash drive that’s been integrated into an audio cassette shell. The real appeal though comes with the MIXA website which allows you to interactively design a custom label for the tape. You can choose from a collection of pre-existing designs, which still offer a bit of customization, or upload your own images and graphics. Once the design is completed and the finished USB cassette arrives you can then load it up with your own ‘mix tape’ of MP3s. The MIXA costs about $40 but includes worldwide shipping as well as a unique sleeve (also designed by you), a set of MIXA stickers and a USB extension cable. See less

So in an attempt to reach out to both analog and digital music fans at the same time, a German company has created a new format called VinylDisc with a CD on one side, and a vinyl recording on the other. While the CD side can hold the typical 70 minutes of music, due to the size limits of the compact disc the vinyl side can only hold around 3 minutes. A rock band called Fightstar will actually be releasing its next single on the VinylDisc format, though to be honest its record company (Gut) admits the limited run of 3,000 copies is more of a gimmick than anything. However Guy Holmes, the chairman of Gut, says that if VinylDisc actually proves popular they’ll gladly try it out with other bands as well. It does require some basic paper folding skills to assemble but in no time you’ll be blasting your music through its fully working pair of amplified speakers. On top of that it’s also got retro 80’s styling and I think you’d look pretty cool walking around the office carrying this thing on your shoulder. I’m not 100% sure how it connects to the iPod but if it uses the headphone jack it’s only a pair of scissors away from being compatible with other MP3 players as well. The Cardboard iPod Boombox should be available from SUCK UK at the end of the month for about $40. See less

And while the 628×528 pixel resolution of the webcam is nothing great it’s the other features that make this mini R2D2 very tempting. First of all it’s wireless which means it doesn’t need to be tethered to your PC with a USB cable. This is particularly important since R2D2 can also be controlled remotely with either an included lightsaber-shaped remote or from a web-enabled PC anywhere in the world. So if the droid is not giving you the angle you’re looking for you can steer him around your desk and if you get too close to the edge a sensor located on the underside of the front leg will stop R2D2 from falling off. R2 now sports a DLP projector in his little droid noggin that has a 1024 x 768 resolution and 1500:1 contrast ratio. R2 can throw an image 80” in size from up to 16.5 feet away. If you feel like watching a movie on the ceiling, the projector can rotate 65 degrees making that possible. One of the arm housings has a DVD/CD player and R2’s vents hide an iPod dock, which I’m sure Luke always felt R2 was missing. The iPod dock will fit most iPod’s including the iPod Video and allows you to play your videos back through the projector and hear the sound through the twin 20mm speakers built-in. Next to the docking station are a memory card reader and a USB port. Connections on the back allow you to hook up headphones, speakers and your game system as well.
