This bat skull is a cast of an Asian fruit bat. The skull measures 1 and 3/8 inches long and an inch wide. It comes on a nice thick gold plated chain. This piece was cast here in NYC and finished here in my studio. This is my exclusive design and the original was sculpted in wax and reworked by master carver Keith Butcher here in NYC. The bail in the back is cast as part of the piece so it is solid and strong. The piece is weighty without being too heavy. It is a nice size as well and gets a lot of attention. Fruit bats are an important part of the ecosystem as they do a great deal of the pollination of the fruit trees. They are also really tasty. I was living with this traditional family in Northern Laos in the early 90's. Momma would cook them up wings and all. And now for something completely different! We have a lovely small tree called Corylus avellana contorta (also known as Contorted Filbert, Harry Lauder's Walking Stick, or Corkscrew Hazel). It's a cool tree, with gnarled, curly branches and heart-shaped leaves. The cuttings from this tree are like works of art. I can never bring myself to throw them into the fire pit. In the true magpie nature of the artist's hoarding heart, I saved these pruned branches, never quite knowing what to do with them, but intuitively sensing that surely someday I'd find a purpose for them. Today is that day. This necklace is made from three cuttings from that Contorted Filbert. I bound them together with square brass wire and gave them a layer of protective Diamond Glaze coating. The piece hangs from two brass textured rolo chains and is accented with 8mm Robin's egg blue and brown speckled Czech glass beads and square brass beadcaps.
