(10/18/10) This tutorial was featured over at Ucreate a few months back and I thought I'd share it here with all of you today! The photos I took here, and here were all edited using this technique. So lets jump right in shall we? I'm going to show you how to take a photo like this: to this in just a few simple steps: 1. I began by opening my original photo in my photo editing program Adobe Photoshop CS4 (File -> Open) **please note: Adobe Photoshop Elements is also a great program to use and the technique is almost identical when following the instructions given here. 2. Using a couple of my favorite photoshop actions (more info about what photoshop actions are and how to use them can be found here) my photo began to look like this: 3. Next I wanted to add a little bit of interest to the background (the blue wall in my office) and I did this by adding a texture overlay to my photo. There are many textures available out there for purchase but for this particular effect I created my own texture...See less

(02/26/10) What is a portrait photography fad? A fad is something that has a short term boost in popularity. To me, a photography “fad” can be a pose, prop or style of photographing or editing that becomes extremely popular for an isolated period of time. While fads tend to be exceptionally popular for a short time, a trend has staying power. Sometimes something starts as a fad but ends up a trend. Occasionally it’s hard to determine whether something is fad or trend. There are dozens of photo fads coming and going all the time. Now, with social networking so prevalent, fads can occur fast and be more widespread. Think about photography forums, photography blogs, Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr. When you visit these places, you see images of other photographers. And chances are, no matter how original try to be, something may catch your eye. You may get an idea. You may see a prop you like or see a pose that you want to try. You may be inspired to try new techniques, locations, lighting, or...See less

(02/24/10) We’ve all been there; you head out for a session and you’re feeling on top of the world! Setting off to do what you love, camera in hand, chai (or coffee, if you prefer) in your tummy, and a smile on your face. You are INVINCIBLE! *cough* or so you thought. Nine times out of 10, something is going to hinder the day from going as planned, and so, here are seven glorious steps you can take to be more prepared for pretty much anything that might come between you and that perfect experience you’d hoped for. 1. Client Evaluation. Believe it or not, the photographic process actually begins far before you start conceptualizing the session. You’ve received the phone call, you’ve scheduled the date, the client loves your work, and you’re ready to deliver. But have you taken those extra special steps towards getting to know who you’ll be working with? I offer my clients a preliminary evaluation worksheet filled with questions that dig a little deeper into who they are, in conjunction with what...See less

(11/11/08) Filed under: Professional Photos — Penny Adams, Photo Editor at 12:01 am on Monday, November 10, 2008 As the days grow colder here in the U.S. and you find your days being stuck indoors, don’t become uninspired. If you or someone you know has a gift for making mouth-watering meals and desserts, be creative in the kitchen with your camera! Over the years, our editors have found some really beautiful culinary creations on Webshots, but unfortunately often times we cannot feature them because the images are either blurry, too dark or just have unattractive backgrounds. Food photography can be challenging, but using some simple principles of composition, lighting and selective focusing, you too can build a stunning collection of delicious edibles from scratch. As a starting point, we would first suggest browsing the photos in your favorite cookbooks or food related magazines. Make note of what photos you like and don’t like. Pay close attention to the background, is it simply plain or in a...See less

(10/20/08) I have had several people email me with questions about how I get crisp, sharp images, so I thought I would make a post about it. First of all, let me say that it can be very challenging! It has taken me lots of practice and lots of patience to learn how to get my images in sharp focus. I am still learning new techniques and tricks, but here are some of the things that I have learned. 1 • Keep your shutter speed high enough for your given situation. For a long time, I wanted to believe that my hands were steady enough to use shutter speeds of 1/4oth or 1/60th of a second, but I have since learned that my hands are just not that steady, so I either need to use a tripod (which still won't help very much with a moving subject), or set the shutter speed to a higher number. Both of the images above were hand held, and were taken with a 50mm 1.8 lens. The first image was taken at 1/60th of a second, and the child was moving. Note that it is not in sharp focus. The focus on the second image...See less

(09/05/08) By Miz Booshay. Once upon a time I took some wedding pictures for my friend’s sister. It was a very small affair, and it was thirty years ago. I was just a college girl with a camera and was dumb enough to say yes. The wedding was in the morning and the pictures were taken in a courtyard at noon. High noon. I was totally wrong for the job. Well, I was free….so I guess that made me right for the job at the time. But they got what they paid for: Horrible, blotchy, wedding pictures. You see, if you stand someone under a tree, you may think you have found a nice place for pictures. But many times those leaves allow bright blotches of sun into your shoot—onto the brides face, onto the grooms nose. And if you stand in the glaring noon day sun? Well, those are extremely difficult conditions. Oh how I wish I had THIS little nugget of wisdom then: Move your subjects into the open shade. * Turn them around and look for the light in their eyes. * Facing out toward the light source will give you...See less
