Tootsietoy Prehistoric Animals

by hankinstein

0 Hearts

Tootsietoy, a well-known toy company, produced hollow-bodied, multi-colored "dime store" dinosaurs in the 1970s-80s. They also produced the lesser known, and much rarer, line of hollow-bodied prehistoric mammals known as Giant Mighty Monsters. These were extremely cheap figures back then, but are now quite collectible, especially if you can acquire a figure that hasn't been broken and/or chewed on (kids like to chew on plastic toys a lot). Currently, Tootsietoy is selling a smaller line of Ajax copies available in bags and buckets.

Tootsietoy's T-Rex in white. Found on Ebay (he came in the same lot as the yellow one, also pictured here).

White Moschops

Purchased by me at a local dime store in the early 1980s--probably 1980, actually. This was one of my first prehistoric toy figures.

Tootsietoy's Stegosaurus in atomic red. This was the first dinosaur toy I ever owned. I have had him since I was six.

Purple Stegosaurus

Tootsietoy Stegosaurus in bright purple. I have no idea why they gave this Stegosaurus such a huge, carnivorous looking head.

Red Moschops

Found on Ebay, recently. It's interesting that Tootsietoy chose to do a Moschops figure, but I suspect that it's because Marx and MPC did. It's not a very commonly found figure. Moschops is not a dinosaur, it's a Therapsid that occurred before the... See more more

Lime Green Triceratops

Found on Ebay. I think this may be a later one. As far as I know, these dinosaurs are still in production, though I have yet to run across them in brick-and-mortar stores.

Powder Blue Tyrannosaurus

Found on Ebay. This is one of the earlier figures, I think. The earlier figures produced seem to be made of slightly cheaper, and less opaque plastic. I could be wrong though.

Blue Dimetrodon

Tootsietoy Blue Dimetrodon. I purchased this in the early 1980s at a dime store. The end of the tail is broken off. These figures tails/spikes/plates/teeth snapped off quite easily.

White Brontosaurus

Created by hankinstein on 1/31/07

Brontosaurus (Apartosaurus). Again, a very 'old school' style, obviously. This figure looks almost identical to the dinosaur on the Sinclair logo, and these are sometimes confused with similar plastic dinos that Sinclair released much earlier. When my... See more more

Yellow Tyrannosaurus

A more "old school" rendering of T-Rex, in a hunkered-over pose.
