(11/03/07) Reading the subtitle of Elizabeth Gilbert's latest book, "One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia," one can only think well, she certainly knows where to look! Also, upon learning that this is her chosen way of recovering from a particularly acrimonious divorce and a trying-to-make-up-for-that-loss romance that didn't work, we might think how fortunate she is to able to seek solace in such intriguing places. Whatever our opinion of her reasons for this journey it has been established that she's a super writer (The Last American Man), and she brings all of her wit, intellect and stylish pen to Eat Pray Love. More than that, she brought a great deal of courage to her chosen task of traveling the world alone at the age of 34. She felt she needed a dramatic change, and it may be that she has found it. In Guidance we are presented with non-trivial explanations on how to align our lives in such a way as to be open to the direction of God. I was particularly impressed with the depth of the book. Before even stating how we are to hear God, Willard discusses the role our beliefs have in the matter. This seems so obvious, but it is so often overlooked. It is obvious because if we do not believe that God speaks through events and other happenings we will always be waiting for the quintissential lighting bolt of inspiration. Willard also discusses the role our very lives have in communion with God. He states that if we are not living lives in alignment with God's will it will be pretty hard to hear God, since in essence we are ignoring Him in our very being. The author, Francois de Salignac de La Mothe Fenelon, has written letters to people within the court of King Louis XIV on the practical matters of living out their faith in a secular world. Excerpts from those letters are translated in modern English for this book. The preface reads, "Consider turning to this book not primarily to expose your mind to idea, but rather to seek to enter into companionship with this friend of God." That statement hints at the mystical quality of these letters. Fenelon urges us to live by faith through the empowering grace of Jesus Christ and to avoid loving knowledge to the extent that we may know more truth than we live. (07/22/07) McKinley writes an excellent work examining Jesus ministry to people in the margins. Many may be familiar with McKinley as 'Pastor Rick' in Don Miller's books (Blue Like Jazz, etc). Pastor Rick really picks up on a lot of the ideas Miller writes about but puts feet to them. He presents a view of Christianity that recognizes how many people feel broken, damaged by family/friends and lost in a world that seems to be heading in the other direction. This is where understanding how the Bible shows Jesus and his work to those left in the margins is so valuable. McKinley writes from experience, as they guy who has had his own struggles with acceptance and letting people in. (07/22/07) It's rare that I read a book in bed until 3:00AM simply because I am invigorated and inspired by the author to such a degree that sleep becomes irrelevant. That's the effect this book had on me. This guy is onto something. So are those he hangs with. They live it. Rick writes, "One of the biggest challenges to following Jesus into His kingdom is not a lack of direction but a lack of desire. Most of us really don't want to do it." (p.50). It is written in letter form to an unknown friend. Charlie is always completely honest, whether he is describing his first "beer" party where he witnessed a girl being raped by her boyfriend, or explaining masturbation and his excitement for this newfound "activity." Sufjan was the first artist I've heard who wasn't inclined to keep his banjo playing on a modest level. On "Seven Swans" you could even consider the banjo his primary instrument-almost. So, I guess you could consider it ironic that my favorite track is "A Good Man Is Hard To Find", because it is completely absent of any banjos. But nevertheless, it has my favorite melody, albeit on an acoustic guitar. Half way through the song, it really picks up, adding organs, a chorus of female vocals and a sporadic beat. It's almost my favorite Sufjan song, but that still remains with "For The Widows In Paradise..." from his "Michigan" album. My next favorite track is "All The Trees Of The Field Will Clap Their Hands." Now this song features no guitar, only Sufjan's banjo. There is something very moving about opening up a book and seeing the innermost feelings of others...some that are so spot on to how one has felt in the past and others so alien as to break one's heart...but all are inspiring in their own way. You get humor (some of these are funny beyond description), heartwarming, and even heart-wrenching...they run the gamut of human emotion and drag the reader (willingly and happily) along for the ride.
