(02/27/12) This documentary that follows three meat- and cheese-loving New Yorkers who agree to adopt a vegan diet for six weeks. Lured by true tales of weight lost and health regained, they begin to uncover the hidden sides of animal agriculture that make them wonder whether solutions offered in films like Food, Inc. go far enough. Before long, they find themselves risking everything to expose an industry they supported just weeks before. But can their convictions carry them through when times get tough? What about on family vacations fraught with skeptical step-dads, carnivorous cousins, and breakfast buffets? This laugh-out-loud funny, entertaining, and inspiring documentary showcases the rapid and at times comedic evolution of three people who share one journey and ultimately discover their own paths in creating a kinder, cleaner, greener world, one bite at a time. (02/27/12) Magical and haunting, "Seeing in the Dark" is a beautifully photographed and inspirational account of the significant impact of amateurs in the field of astronomy. Even if you know little about the stars, you'll be enchanted by the imagery and engaged by the age-old question of man's place in the universe. This production should be the starting point of many interesting discussions, in and out of the classroom. Highly recommended, especially in HD. See less

(11/07/11) Based on Alex Haley's best-selling novel about his African ancestors, Roots followed several generations in the lives of a slave family. The saga began with Kunta Kinte (LeVar Burton), a West African youth captured by slave raiders and shipped to America in the 1700s. The family's saga is depicted up until the Civil War where Kunte Kinte's grandson gained emancipation. Roots made its greatest impression on the ratings and widespread popularity it garnered. On average, 130 million - almost half the country at the time - saw all or part of the series. DVD Features: Audio Commentary Documentaries Electronic press kit Featurette InterviewsSee less

(09/18/11) This enthralling BBC series examines "the lengths living beings go to to stay alive," in the words of Sir David Attenborough (Oprah Winfrey narrates the Discovery Channel version). Aided by breathtaking high-definition cinematography, the makers of Planet Earth explore the more colorful strategies the world's creatures employ to procreate, evade predators, and obtain nourishment. Cameras travel though the air, under the water, and right into the faces of insects, like the alien visage of the stalk-eyed fly. Except for "Challenges of Life" and "Hunters and Hunted," each episode covers a different category, such as mammals and birds. Among the more memorable images: three cheetahs move with the relentless rhythm of mobsters, a school of flying fish glides through the air with the grace of ballerinas, and a Jesus Christ lizard skips across the water, like, well, you know. The strangest sights range from a pebble toad bouncing away from a spider like a rubber ball and brown-tufted capuchin...See less

(05/18/11) This astonishing, scintillating collection from the silent era, most of which are from the 1920s, are genuine, legitimate and by today's hardcore standards, amazingly charming, pornographic short films that leave nothing to the imagination. From predictable fantasy scenarios - monk spies on, then joins naughty nuns; teacher must spank naughty schoolgirls - to more esoteric fare (homosexuality and animal ecstasy, to name just two), vintage porn has never been more accessible...or attainable. The 12 shorts in The Good Old Naughty Days were primarily designed to be shown in the waiting rooms of brothels, amusing patrons - and no doubt giving them some ideas - as they awaited their girl. They also reveal production standards far in advance of comparable films being made elsewhere at the time, as well as an inventive and often humorous array of diverse couplings. These films were usually created in a haphazard fashion in an afternoon with friends and local prostitutes lending a hand for a...See less

(02/06/11) A surprise hit in America, this 1994 Australian comedy is anchored by Terence Stamp as a transsexual who, in the company of two drag queens, travels to a remote desert location to put on a lip-synch performance--to the amazement of the locals. Getting there on a pink bus named Priscilla, the trio stop and play for people all over the Outback, getting the same homophobic, bewildered responses. The weak link in the film is dialogue that seems to have been pulled from "Queer Movie Banter for Dummies," all bitchy and cliché-ridden but fortunately salvaged by strong acting. The most fun comes whenever the three are performing; fans of Abba will be particularly pleased. --Tom KeoghSee less

(12/19/10) This is an extremely versatile DVD by renowned yoga instructor Barbara Benagh. She has combined short posture segments into a series of 20 different practices addressing a variety of stress-related conditions, from energizing after a long day to coping with aches and pains to relieving various digestive conditions. The practices, which are slow-moving with a mostly restorative focus, range in length from 15 to 60 minutes, making it easy to fit yoga into even your busiest days. Barbara frequently uses props; in addition to a yoga mat, I would recommend that you have at least one blanket on hand (preferably 2-3), with pillows and an eye bag being optional. A breakdown of the DVD is listed below. The headings are the items found on the main menu, and the bullets indicate submenu items. The times for each practice are given as they appear on-screen, but I've added times in parentheses based on my own review. I've included brief descriptions of each individual practice.See less

(12/19/10) Sir Richard Attenborough's 1982 multiple-Oscar winner (including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Ben Kingsley) is an engrossing, reverential look at the life of Mohandas K. Gandhi, who introduced the doctrine of nonviolent resistance to the colonized people of India and who ultimately gained the nation its independence. Kingsley is magnificent as Gandhi as he changes over the course of the three-hour film from an insignificant lawyer to an international leader and symbol. Strong on history (the historic division between India and Pakistan, still a huge problem today, can be seen in its formative stages here) as well as character and ideas, this is a fine film. --Tom KeoghSee less

(11/17/07) This documentary is an eye-opener. It shines a long overdue light into the often perilous shadow world of GLBT people in the developing world. After watching this program, I thanked God for my parents, my family, my friends, and the luck of being born in a place like Boston. At the end of the day, cultural differences and ideology are rendered meaningless in the face of biology: WE ARE ALL PART OF THE HUMAN FAMILY. This dvd is a MUST see.See less

(11/07/07) McLibel is the true story of a postman and a gardener who took on McDonald's and wouldn't say "McSorry," in a legal battle since described as "the biggest corporate PR disaster in history." McDonald's loved using the UK's libel laws to suppress criticism. Major media organizations like the BBC and The Sun had crumbled and apologized. But then McDonald's sued penniless anarchist activists' Helen Steel and Dave Morris. In what became the longest trial in English legal history, the "McLibel 2" represented themselves against McDonald's USD$19 million legal team. Every aspect of the corporation's business was cross-examined: from junk food and McJobs, to animal cruelty, environmental damage and the company's advertising to children. Outside the courtroom, Dave brought up his young son alone and Helen supported herself working nights in a bar. McDonald's tried every trick in the book against them. Legal maneuvers. A visit from Ronald McDonald. Top U.S.executives flying to London for secret...See less

(08/01/07) In the summer of 2005 a 16yo Memphis, TN wrote on his MySpace blog about his parents sending him to a "Fundamentalist Christian" program that strives to turn gay teens straight. This documentary follows the inspirational story of this teens local community standing up for their friend with daily protests at the facility in what would become an international news story. The documentary features several former clients of the organization who tell their personal stories about the time they spent within the programs walls. (06/22/07) I saw a TV broadcast and thought, "Gotta have it." My wife and I just had our first, so I thought it would be a good idea. It seems to be useful so far, and Dunstan is good at what she does. However,I was rather disappointed to find a combined content total (lessons 1&2) of barely 30 minutes (on two DVD's! wasteful), covering only five 'words'. These 15 minute lessons are followed by extensive praise in the form of testimonials, so called 'Bonus Features'. These run longer than the lessons. I don't understand, if I'm at home watching the DVD I've already bought the item, so why sell it to me? The content is quality - the item is 20% overpriced.See less

(12/05/06) A wonderful video celebration of the Biotic Baking Brigade and the Global Pastry Uprising. Featuring a cornucopia of political pie-throwings in San Francisco and beyond, including a brief history of consumable comedy, behind the scenes interviews with underground pie-tossers, the corporate media analysis, and the in-your-face politics behind the actions. Most delicious of all, of course, is the video footage of San Francisco's Mayor Willie Brown, Robert Shapiro (CEO of Monsanto), economist Milton Friedman, Kenneth Derr (CEO of Chevron), Renato Ruggiero (Chief of the World Trade Organization) and Bill Gates (well, everyone knows who he is!) getting it full in the face!
