  • As I am in the middle of making presents and other craft driven craziness (knitting a scarf, making my own wrapping paper, making my own New Year's cards) I plan to decorate my house in sheer mess of glitter yarn, tissue paper, empty ink cartridges, sticky patches on the floor and candles scented like the tropics so I can think about getting away from it all for cheer. • This year I'm decorating the house warm and cozy - smells of baked goods (from candles AND actual baked goods), festive bows and homey popcorn and cranberry garland on the tree. I'm planning on enlarging photos from Christmas' past and putting them all over the place. Report Spam Posted by vntgbabe at 12:11 PM on 11/16/09

  • I LOVE Christmas decorations! I'll be getting a mini fake Christmas tree for my apartment, along with holiday-scented candles and lights for the patio. Report Spam Posted by mamor at 12:13 PM on 11/16/09

  • Lots of globe lights for the patio and chandelier garlands. I'm making 3-d paper snowflakes in all sizes, and of course lots of holiday candles! Report Spam Posted by ruthiegyll at 12:19 PM on 11/16/09

  • I don't actually decorate for the holidays since I never spend time at my house during the holidays any way, but I intend to make sure my apartment is full of yummy smells - fresh baked apple pie mostly (this is usually what I bring to holiday get togethers), but also yummy chocolatey cookies, hot cocoa with cinnamon, and maybe I'll venture and try my hand at cooking a small turkey. And I'll most likely be going a similar route to LB by decorating the floor with gift preparations. :) Report Spam Posted by gregsgal at 12:20 PM on 11/16/09

  • the family dog will be sporting reindeer ears. and the rest of the house will be filled with the wonderful smell of home cooking. the table will also include some of the better homes and gardens accessories. :) Report Spam Posted by pinkdeals at 12:25 PM on 11/16/09

  • I plan on putting my 6' Christmas tree up with my favorite ornaments. My living room always has lots of Christmas lights and decorations. My couch will be filled with stuffed santas, reighdeer and Christmas throws. I love the cinnamon scented pine cones and brooms. I usually have about 3 or 4 smaller Christmas trees that I put up in other rooms. The outdoor decorations always take me the longest because I have to get onto a ladder and string the colored lights around the trees. I have a few inflatables that I add to my outdoor decor. Who knows what else I will add to my collection. I buy some new decorations every year. As a matter of fact, I bought a big silver star to hang in my living room on Saturday! • Although we're in the midst of some big renovations and changes within our home (have a baby due after the holidays), we are always ready for any of the holidays and love to decorate. We will use old family decorations, as well as new decorations, some homemade by my 18 year old son throughout the years and some that we are creating ourselves. We are baking, making homemade soaps, popourri, lotions and delectable desserts for family and friends. We will even dress up our dogs - a rescued Greyhound and our 1 year old Great Dane puppy. • A tree is a must for the holidays - whether its big or small we've got to have one, trimmed with all the pretty sparkly ornaments of past and present -ornaments that bring forth memories of Christmas' past, and ones that signify the Christmas season of the moment. My favorite ornaments are the ones that were received for each my girls' first Christmases. I love the jewel tones associated with the holidays and I utilize these soft touches of velvet in some of our stockings and our tree skirt. The stocking are hung by the hearth, and decorated with a favorite ornament for each child. Twinkling lights are hung inside and outside. I love the ones that have different option for how they blink, chase or fade. The glow of the lights in a darkened room have such a homey and comforting feel. • My grandmothers nativity scene is a must. I've been reading some decorating blogs lately and I may try some of the DIY tips they have had. It will just depend how ambitious I feel. Report Spam Posted by jnzmom at 1:06 PM on 11/16/09

  • Well I decorate for holidays like I do everything..on a wing and a prayer..I usually shop for unusual or quirky ornaments at flea markets, goodwill, and on etsy and I just go wild. This year I think i might to 2 trees a nice funky big one upstairs and in the kids big room we'll probably do a charlie brown tree and I'll let them make all the ornaments for that one. when I moved from Savannah 6 years ago to where I am now I lost all my Christmas decorations somehow in the move and didn't realize it for 7 months and then it was too late to get them back. i was devistated because it had some of my kids first ornaments. I'm still trying to rebuild my collection! Any way happy Holidays everyone and have a Kaboodlee Doodle of a time! Report Spam Posted by happyenchilada at 1:10 PM on 11/16/09

I'm not sure that we'll even have a tree (I like to buy them fresh) but I will put out our nativity scene and the kids and I are going to make a homemade Advent calendar to countdown the days until Christmas. I also bought a kid's book on the meaning of Christmas and everyday you read a section out loud. I'm hoping that it will become a tradition. We don't have a lot but I think that it's a blessing in disguise because our focus will be on each other and on the reason for the season. But i think the best way to decorate your house is with the smell of some freshly baked cookies. Draws people in every time. Report Spam Posted by rock4ever951 at 4:33 PM on 11/16/09

  • I've had my fake christmas tree up for about the last three years, so I already have most of my christmas decorating done. I also have the believe thing from I think hallmark still hanging on my front door. When I lived with my grandpa, he would put up a ton of santas, that he had stored in a plastic garbage bag, and then they would go where they have always been. • I like to decorate for the holidays with lots of garland and floral sprays, big shiny balls in any kind of container that will hold them, and my 7' flocked tree. Christmas music gets played twice a year in my home - once when I decorate and then again on Christmas morning....a little quiet time with my music and my mimosa before heading out to spend the day with my family. • My husband likes lights inside year around, so he keeps a set of icicle lights on the archway between the living room and dining room. We'll wrap red lights around our white porch posts, and set up a handmade/handpainted wooden snowman in the side yard. I have a set of French Horns on garland that I put on the front windows, that play Christmas carols. Inside, we have the tree, but also put up a miniature village and sometimes a train set under the tree. And lots of Christmas Santas, teddy bears, reindeer, angels, and other figurines that I like to set around the house, along with snow globes, miniature trees that light up, various music boxes, and such. Most remind me of my own childhood Christmases, and of the precious Christmas memories when my two sons were small. Report Spam Posted by jojopotatoes at 8:06 PM on 11/16/09

  • We are decorate together in what I would describe as an extreme eclectic style. We will all go to buy the traditional tree. We buy a couple of new decorations everywhere and then use ones we have collected over many years including a couple from my grandmother. We make bunches of paper cut out snowflakes to put in all our windows and I like to have different colored ribbon curled and displayed in different sized clear glass bottles and vases and bowls. And our nativity set and advent calendar and advent wreath will be the most prominent of our Christmas decorations. Report Spam Posted by paws72 at 9:02 PM on 11/16/09

  • I absolutely love Christmas and enjoy decorating with lots of holiday candles, garland, my ornament collection, and even the tattered old Christmas decor that I enjoyed as a child and that still makes me smile. Most importantly, my decorations will include family photo albums brimming with Christmas memories, as well as holiday frames with pictures of loved ones who are no longer with us, but who are held close in our hearts and remembered with joy, laughter and gratitude every holiday season. • This has been really neat reading other people's plans & traditions. I will have my "niece" & "nephew" over (BFF's kids) to spend the night. They love to watch "A Christmas Story" and have cocoa. We'll cut out our own snowflakes and hang them from the ceiling. Usually I'll already have lights up in all the rooms by then so the snowflakes are a final touch. I don't usually worry about outside lights because I live in an apt., although last year on Christmas eve we put floating candles in the pool. That looked pretty festive. The next day? It's cookie time! The kids are 10 & 12 now so we'll probably make something a little more fancy. Christmas Eve, we'll probably go see a band and Christmas Day it's all about making the rounds, getting fuller at every stop. Report Spam Posted by miss_daphne at 9:15 PM on 11/16/09

  • So wO... we've recently bought a new home. Usually I'm not into the whole going all out for xmas. This year however everyone is stopping by to check out the new diggs. I can't disapoint. Now I could do the traditional red and green, natural garlands of evergreen and popcorn, but anyone can do that. We live in the desert, my little one has gone nuts for the color pink and I've got a decent budget for decor but not as much as I would like. So I've decided to make a wreath of succulents, living where I do its fairly easy, they've even got carnation to hot pink succulents, so I'm making a living wreath for the front door and a similar wall panel for mantel, included will be white and silver glittered snowflakes. The dd talked us into purchasing her a hot pink fake tinsel tree. We've purchased various white and silver and white with silver glittered ornaments, and hot pink tiny xmas lights. This little tree gets to go up in her seated window. As for the rest its pink and silver. Ill post pix if I can figure out how.For treats and goodies, its alice in wonderland meets christmas.Yay! Report Spam Posted by divadelamort at 4:18 AM on 11/17/09

  • At our house, from Oct. 1st through Jan. 1st, our house not only looks the holiday- - - it SMELLS like it, too! Beginning Oct. 1st, we decorate our house with pumpkins, witches, orange/green/purple lights, vampires, etc. in preparation for the little trick-or-treaters. On Nov. 1st, we transform our home into a Thanksgiving feast including pilgrims, haystacks, some of the same pumpkins leftover, and the same lights. This also includes a pumpkin spice potpourri heating in its' pot. Lastly, all of the previous holiday decorating accumulates on the day after Thanksgiving: my two sons help me put up the Christmas decorations! There is a big Christmas tree to place in the living room, and a table top one for my bedroom (so that I can enjoy this one on my very own!). There are lights on the tree, as well as strung all throughout the house. The pumpkin/spice potpourri is exchanged for cinnamon/spice. There are all kinds of decorations - - new ones that I like to get every year (who can resist?), and older ones not only from my sons' past Christmases, but the ones that my parents used when they were with us (this is the first Christmas without both of them). Oh? Did I mention that my sons are 29 and 25 years old- - yet they have been decorating for me ( I do the "easy" things- - it's hard for me with my disability) since they were little boys. How great is that?! How many moms can say that? I am SO proud of them. If there is one thing that I want them to always remember when they celebrate the holidays with their own families: make sure it all begins in your heart. HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!!! : D Report Spam Posted by pgt1956 at 5:44 AM on 11/17/09

Hopefully I can find the lights I need. I live in Michigan and the largest X-mas store in the world is only over an hour away, so I am sure I will get the lights I need. Then to save money, I plan to go around in the next couple of weeks and pick-up fallen pine cones and small branches and spray paint them in the same colors as my lights and place them around the house to add a festive touch in bowls and vases. I want to decorate my apartment in the most festive, innovative, unusual way by placing pictures and momentos of my family all over, items that depict the most memorable loving and funny stories of us growing up. After dinner, we could sit around, pick an item and describes the significance to each of us.Holidays were never supposed to be about gifts but celebrating time together. • I love to decorate for the holidays, and living in a row house in the city lets me do it differently than I have in the past. Also, I am finishing some major renovation work and plan to show it off this season. The last 2 years I have just put a wreath on the front door and a fake 3' tree in the window. This year I plan to do much more. First off a real tree in the front window, 6-8ft tall. I'm going to go to a cut your own tree farm to find the perfect one. Then take advantage of some christmas light trade-in programs for new LED lights. I love to hand make christmas ornaments so I will be putting up ones from years past plus ones I make this year. A much more festive wreath will be hung on the door. My neighbor usually hangs some garland and lights around his windows which look great and I hope to do the same. I enjoy having friends over for dinner so the main living/entertaining area will be decorated with some festive linens with candles and decorative holders and displays. In the fireplace, which has been unused the past few years, I plan to find or make a tealight display to give the illusion of a real fire and bring some added warmth. The kitchen will be full of wonderful scents, either from cooking for my friends or from holiday scented candles. Report Spam Posted by halmetzler at 7:08 AM on 11/18/09

She has finally found a job in this horrible college grad job market working at a retail store in Chicago and, for the first time, can't get away long enough to be home to spend Christmas with our family. She has always been a stickler for family traditions so I am hoping to deliver a tree and decorations to her place as a surprise. It makes me sad that she won't be here with her brothers and sisters but I hope to make the time special just the same. Report Spam Posted by cornbread54 at 7:16 AM on 11/18/09

A lavishly decorated smaller tree on an antique table instead of a large traditional tree will be the focal point of the holiday decorations. Candles and electric room infusers (love the Bath and Body Works plug in collections) to give a festive but not overpowering scent to the air. Warm and cozy with just a hint of tradition is the inspiring theme. Report Spam Posted by divergirl at 7:16 AM on 11/18/09

  • As the color-burst mum plants fade, we gradually replace them with evergreen branches and bittersweet cut from our yard and hikes. Sprigs of greens with ribbon replace or are added to various vessels throughout the rooms inside. They look and smell great. Our picture window is filled with forced bulbs in decorative planters and, when the time comes, we will bring our 5 year-old potted tree (3 1/2 ft) in and decorate it as a group. Ornaments are homemade, handcrafted and really creative. Everyone (up to 6 of us) brings a simple ornament to hang and the materials to teach another (or others) to make for the tree or to take home. It's a festive group and there is lots of chat, sharing and creative ideas float around like crazy! Each family member has this or herown box of ornaments. The children decorate a small tree in their bedrooms with their ornaments and then the whole family shares in decorating the main Christmas tree!We try to make our home very festive outdoors, as much asindoors;, without overkill. • I always go out for Xmas dinner, but fully intend on decorating my living room with a traditional tree and all the frills. I live alone and by decorating, it keeps all the memories from the past 58 years fresh and alive. Like how my Dad used to flock our tree in a different color for about 10 years. We even had the blue Christmas the year Elvis died. Wow, thinking back brings back the lives and thoughts of my Mom and Dad. That's the true meaning of Christmas. • I LOVE my christmas tree. When we put it up each year, my 5 teens decorate it with white lights and my big collection of all ethnicities of angels all dressed in white and then white pearls for garland and mauve cream and gold mixed victorian bows. So beautiful and meaningful. Every angel seems to have her own personality and character. I love their diversity most of all. Also a favorite thing I do for every season and holiday and Christmas is certainly no exception is I buy fragrant home oils in delicious yummy scents from Bath and Bodyworks and put them in my electric oil warmers throughout the house. Currently during this thanksgiving season I have Autumn Apple in some and a mix of Pumpkin Pie and Vanila Carmel in the others. For Christmas I am putting Frosted Cranberry in some and I have not yet chosen the second edible like scent for the others yet but look forward to doing so. It REALLY sets an atmosphere and everyone from family to guests comment on how wonderful it smells Report Spam Posted by earthangel67 at 11:45 AM on 11/18/09

  • With family spread across the States, it's myself, my husband and two teenage sons at home for the holidays. We've always done very traditional holiday decor and attended church on Christmas Eve. After turning 45 though I learned that putting up two trees and planning two all-out meals (taking weeks to plan and days to prepare) isn't what holidays is about. Much less the time it takes to decorate and purchase the perfect gifts. We celebrate Thanksgiving for our blessings (I'm Cherokee lineage and incorporate that as well) and we celebrate Christmas as the birth of our Saviour, our Lord Jesus Christ. We keep the meaning in the season now rather than stressing over decor and food. Report Spam Posted by chosenhim at 7:00 PM on 11/18/09

  • While I do have the usual stockings, ornaments for my tree collected from my travels, lights, candles, etc, I also have an army of nutcrackers. Seriously, an army. In my early teens my grandmother learned that the Nutcracker was not only my favorite musical piece, but that also the story by Hoffman was my favorite fairy tale. I began to receive a nutcracker every year for Christmas, some imported from Germany, and then after she passed, my friends and relatives carried on the tradition - sometimes I get several a year, and they all are very different and wonderful. I have a Mariachi and a French maid, and some great halloween-themed nutcrackers, but at Christmas the whole brigade comes out. My very favorite remains that smallest, most humble soldier in his royal blue uniform from my first nutcracker Christmas because of all my presents, he was the greatest surprise. We put a tree skirt around it and a couple of poinsettias. We also have a tabletop sized fiber optic tree we put on our dining room table, along with Christmas music boxes gathered over the years, candles, Christmas toys and the angel chimes that operate with candles. A wreath on the door and lights on the porch pretty much complete the decorations. For Thanksgiving, we just put a small, stuffed turkey (no pun intended) on the table as a centerpiece. His name is Jerry as a friend gave him to us many years ago, and his name is Jerry. Other than that, placemats with fall colored leaves on them and a small Thanksgiving wreath on the door complete the scene. Report Spam Posted by tinahenry at 12:37 PM on 11/19/09

Then I set up the ceramic Christmas tree that my Dad made me 25 years ago, in the middle of the table. • I live in a duplex and I live upstairs, which means that I don't get to do a lot of outside decorating. However, for the past couple of months, I have been knitting and crocheting and cross-stitching Christmas ornaments, snowflakes, and stockings and will have enough for a 'hand-crafted Christmas tree" this year. I have all sorts of little lighted shelf-sitters as well as some Christmas bric-brac and greenery to scatter around our small apartment. It doesn't take a lot in such a small space to look "Christmassy" :) Report Spam Posted by jewel33064 at 5:26 PM on 11/19/09

  • This year we're having to cut back on Christmas lights, but that won't stop the Christmas cheer! We have opted to put up a "real" Christmas tree, rather than the ugly, plastic thing falling apart downstairs. We're not even buying the tree, we're earning it buy helping unload trees at a Christmas tree lot. So no money spent there. We're going to be decorating, but it will all be kid-friendly. No worries about our 2-year old breaking sentimental ornaments or getting hurt with not-so-kid friendly decor. After Thanksgiving we will be working on a popcorn and cranberry garland that we can then give to our chickens after the holidays are over. No waste there. Also, we will be making a paper chain garland from strips of leftover scrapbooking paper. The nativity is made from stained blocks of scrap lumber with nativity scenes decoupaged onto them. So it's okay for my 2-year old to grab them and play make believe with them. Report Spam Posted by lady_arndt at 2:25 PM on 11/20/09

  • Everything decorating my home this year will be made by my kids. They're busy making all kinds of things - and I'm really impressed with the creative things they've come up with. They've decorated doorways, the railings going up the stairs, the loft over hang. It's turning out really well - and has been exactly what my budget needs - free! Not to mention it's saved me from having to lug all the decorations out of the icky crawl space. :) Report Spam Posted by onecreativequeen at 3:34 AM on 11/22/09

  • My decorations are minimal. I may put a wreath on the front door. I usually hang a few ornaments around the living room. And I tape the cards I get to the mirror over the fireplace. Report Spam Posted by dusksunset at 4:14 PM on 11/22/09
