The #5-1/4 was often referred to as a junior jack. At 12" long, it fell between the #4 smooth plane at 10" long and the #5 jack at 14" long. Our #5-1/4W varies from the traditional #5-1/4 in various ways, but the two most significant dimensional differences are that ours has a 2" wide blade (rather than 1-3/4") and the mouth is 4-3/8" back of the nose compared with 3-1/2" for the original. This extra length of sole in front of the blade makes it much easier to cut accurately because the extra-long nose makes it easier to maintain the sole flush to the material at the start of a cut. In fact, the combination of the mouth location and the very sensitive feed adjustment lets this plane serve as a jointer for most cabinet work, just as a #5 is used as a jointer. These clamps have five advantages over the traditionally styled fast-acting bar clamps we sell. First, the jaw faces are large (1-1/2" wide by 5" long) with 3-3/8" throat depth. That means there are over 5 square inches of usable surface per jaw, which eliminates the need for gluing shims, since fiber crushing is not a problem. The second major advantage of these clamps is that you need fewer clamps for a job. For example, an entire drawer back can be done with one clamp. The third advantage is that they maintain the squareness of the item being clamped. Fourth, the steel jaws are clad with a high-impact plastic that is non-marking and glue resistant. Finally, they can be used with the clamped material parallel to the bar flat, which is very handy for large flat pieces. However, nearly the whole revival has been with various permutations of backsaws. Well, sometimes you have to cut a curve. That's what a bow saw is for. Now when we say "bow saw" we mean it in the English and American traditional sense - a small frame saw with a narrow blade for curves, piercing, and other intricate work.
