BUY THIS. I have never found opportunity to turn the subwoofer beyond the second lowest setting, but even there it still hits with rich, full bass. You need to have a 7.1 channel DVD player & receiver to get your money's worth, but you can just as easily retire two speakers and use this as a 5.1 system. Either way, the color coded wires make for an easy install. I continue to be impressed by these speakers every time we rent a DVD with a big soundtrack. I only wish we lived out in the sticks so I could crank these suckers up from time to time and "blow the roof off the dump." The service at B&H is exceptional, too.

BUY THIS. The price of last gen LCD screens is plummeting. This is the generation immediately before the "Touch of Color" series. So if you can spare a little red ring around the bezel of the teevee, you'll save yourself about $700. I love mine.

BUY THIS. Or if you can wait a bit, go for the Mini 10 with the 720p full glass screen. I hate smart phones and anything else with a touch screen so I take this little komputros with me everywhere I go. I have a vinyl R2-D2 decal on mine and when she fires up she makes a little Artoo noise.

Belkin 7" Laptop...

See this at: catalog.belkin.com| Added on 01/15/09

Whether you're traveling to the cafe or across the country, this light and durable sleeve protects your mini laptop from minor scratches en route. Stow it inside your own bag or one of Belkin's stylish laptop bags.

Highlights: $19.99

Comments (1)

SKIP IT. I needed a sleeve for my new Mini 9 so I looked around and saw this one for cheap at TigerDirect.com. They were sold out of the nice blue one so I got this drab-looking silver one, and it couldn't be crappier. The neoprene weaving is very porous and the light color shows every possible stain. If you are thinking about buying this, you might as well wrap your precious netbook in a dirty Taco Bell napkin for a few days and see how you like that before plunking down $20 plus shipping.

BUY THIS. I am a big fan of this display. Yes, it is a Gateway (Moo?), but this monitor provides a full 1080p display with every possible input and is routinely available on eBay for under $300. The LED "power" button is minimally invasive, and the monitor provides a crisp HD image. IMHO, you can't go wrong with this flat panel.

BUY THIS. This is the sharpest looking charging station going. I have seen this repackaged under "Energizer" branding (you know, the drumming bunny rabbit?) but mine says "Pelican" on the side. The LEDs shine red when charging and turn green to let you know when you can jump back on and play COD4 for another seven hours straight.

UNDECIDED. I ordered this from China and I really don't quite know what to think of it. It is a little too big. It is way way too thick. And don't count on ever using it as a dual-analog stick controller. That said, it includes a far better keyboard then the Sony controller attachment and certainly can take care of your PS3 remote needs. It is a hard-to-find import right now and there isn't a lot of press on it, so I'd say think it over and then give it a try.

BUY THIS. This middle-generation Core 2 Duo system is approximately 18-months-old and can be had on eBay for around $200. It is marketed as a digital media center and includes a TV tuner and a Windows remote control. It includes a 320 GB Hard Drive with an expansion slot for a second high capacity SATA II drive and a digital optical output for 7.1 surround sound. The only drawback I can fathom is that the design incorporates an Intel motherboard with an integrated GPU and there are no HDMI inputs/outputs. Also, this has only the standard DVD drive and didn't come off the shelf with Blu-Ray compatibility. But may I remind you, considering what it does have this system is a steal at only $200!

Progression Wake Up Clock

Highlights: $49.95

Comments (2)

SKIP IT. I bought this and was generally satisfied with it until I saw my girlfriend's sunrise alarm clock. This clock looks like the pyramid buildings in Blade Runner and the light doesn't get as bright as it should. The aromatherapy and most of the sound functions are an afterthought, but I do like to wake up to the bird chirping. I am hoping to try this one and see if it is any better, but I would really like to see one that has both the simulated sunrise function AND a CD player.

Comments (1)

BUY THIS. This is a nice looking CD Alarm Clock. On the plus side, the snooze is 9 minutes long, the LCD display is adjustable to three brightness levels, there is a nap function, and there are two simultaneous alarm settings (in case you don't wake up at the same time as your spouse). The drawbacks are that the CD alarm feature is only capable of playing the first song on any CD (so make sure you burn songs on your wake-up disc in the right order), the unit is larger than it would seem from these photos, and the speakers have almost no low range sound capability. These drawbacks aside, this clock beats all other CD-ready clocks I've seen priced under $100, hands down.

Panasonic RP-HTX7PP-C...

These large aperture 40mm drive headphones have clear sound reproduction and powerful bass in a retro style. The cord length of 1.2 meters is suitable for remote and non-remote portable players. Also comes with a 2 meter extension cord.

Highlights: $38.50

Comments (3)

SKIP IT. Admittedly, these are some great looking headphones but the cord diameter is extremely thin. It is just a matter of time before they will start cutting-out due to bends/damage to the thin wires. The driver response is decent, but unfortunately these really aren't much more than great looking headphones.

did you give these a spin? these are some seriously swanky looking headphones!

I hate when that happens.

SKIP IT. My dad has both these and a cheaper pair he bought at Radio Shack. I hate to admit that the Radio Shack set far out performs these in a head-to-head, "Pepsi Challenge." Worse yet, these Sony jobs emit an audible "hiss" that just shouldn't be present in a pair of headphones that cost a tick under $200.

If you absolutely have to have these crummy headphones, you'll save $80 by ordering them from B&H Photo. I purchased my surround sound speakers from them and had a great customer service experience.

Any recommendations for headphones that don't suck? I'm in the market.

I hope to try some WeSC phones. I have a melonous head so I appreciate flat drivers, but considering the prices of these things I'd have to be really impressed before parting with that kind of money. Here again, I must defer to mightyj's headphones list.

Heh, "melonous." Also, I didn't realise Josh had a headphones list. Rock. Thanks, dude.

SKIP IT. My little brother has this flash drive. There are a couple of annoying things about it. The white slider glows in a really bright dark orange color. The glow is enough to light up a dark room. Worse yet, the U3 Smart Technology interface is overly cumbersome unless you definitely are intending to use this to transport software. If not, the U3 tech will just slow you down. The U3 software self-installs whenever it connects to a new machine, and is not compatible with Windows Vista.

BUY THIS. This is exactly the same flash drive that currently sells for $80 at Best Buy & Circuit City (as of the date of this posting). My only complaint is that the plastic encasement is too easily scratched, but getting 4GB of name-brand USB storage for $34.99 is a deal that's hard to beat.

Comments (1)

SKIP IT. I am already on my second PEBL phone. The phone works well enough, but is rather thick and includes large areas of low-tempered glass on both the inside and outside (which for me has proven overly fragile for use in a mobile phone). The rubberized design is pretty slick and the magnetic mechanism controlling the self-swinging hinge is a nice trick, but this phone simply needs to get thinner.

Comments (3)

BUY THIS. I found this microSD card on eBay for $19. Upon installation, it immediately increased the memory of my mobile phone by ten thousand percent. This version is a little different than the regular series of MicroSD in that it is designed especially for use in mobile phones and features a 10MB/sec write speed and a 9MB/sec read speed. The added storage capacity allows for approx. 500 MP3s or up to 4,800 photos. From end-to-end, the microSD card itself is a little smaller than a dime, and is far thinner. Also, take care not to over-buy memory, as many phones aren't compatible with recent 4GB, 8GB, & 12GB microSD cards.

"I will make you teensy!"

BUY THIS. I am a bargain shopper, so I wait until the price gets closer to $40-$50. That said, I like this line quite a bit better than the M42s.
