This restaurant was our favorite the first time we lived in Paris; we ate there every Friday night. Now that we live in the suburbs we dine there less frequently, but we still make regular visits. This restaurant, around the corner from Gare St. Lazare, is a small, comfortable place, with murals on the wall featuring Venetian carnival. The food is simple and delicious—brick oven pizza, home made pasta, outstanding lasagna. The specials range from Osso Bucco to meatballs that are out of this world. This is a family operation—the father cooks; the mother makes desserts and charms the guests; the son, Roberto, who departed for a while, has returned along with his beautiful husky, Indy (who loves the sugar cubes that come with the coffee). There is a multi-lingual waiter who is charming as well. Much of why I love this place is hard to put in words. The food is great, but it is much more than that. Frommer's Review L'Ami Louis is in one of central Paris's least fashionable neighborhoods, far removed from the part of the Marais that has become chic, and its facade has seen better days. It was one of Paris's most famous brasseries in the 1930s, thanks to its excellent food served in copious portions and its old-fashioned decor. Its traditions, even the hostile waiters, are fervently maintained today. Amid a "brown gravy" decor (the walls retain a smoky patina), dishes like grilled veal kidneys, roasted suckling lamb, pheasant, venison, confit of duckling, and endless slices of foie gras are served on marble-topped tables. Though some say the ingredients aren't as good as they were in the restaurant's heyday, the sauces are as thick as they were between the wars. Don't save room for dessert -- it focuses simply on fresh fruit. See less

So, the food. I realise that it's only been in recent years that I've been this obsessed with good food. Sure, throughout my life, I've always appreciated a good meal - but this drive to make sure that, especially when travelling, I Always Eat Well? That's a recent development, probably a combination of that summer post-junior year of college when I lived in NY (and had a boyfriend who'd willingly pay for everything, which was key), my discovery of chowhound.com, and that senior year I finally had a real kitchen in a real apartment instead of the crappy dorm kitchens. I haven't been the same since. And I've become almost dictatorish in my quest for good food, always declaring myself in charge of where we're going to eat. Luckily, I have friends who let me be controlling in this manner. Perhaps, even more luckily, I haven't steered anyone terribly wrong. Le P'Tit Troquet, which is very small, provided us with our best meal in Paris. It was so good, in fact, that it is definitely one of the top five meals of my entire life. The restaurant is on a tiny little side street in the 7th. Cars can't go down it, so if you take a taxi, they will have to drop you off, and you'll have to walk the rest of the way down the cobblestones to get there. Once inside, you will find the most darling, quaint, almost country-looking little place. It's delightful. The menu is small and never the same, because they buy the food fresh at the market each day and only get what is fresh and in season. The day we were there was in spring, so all of Paris seemed to be celebrating an abundance of asparagus and wild strawberries. Luckily, these are two things Kelly and I adore.
