The designer got her inspiration this season from artist Bruce Nauman: "I was inspired by his work and his use of neon art. I wanted to inject that through the colors, the fluorescents, on a background of gray." This combination of organic, natural elements mixed with intense, tech-inspired colors made for a gorgeous, fresh collection. Clean lines, athletic details, colorblocking, and racerback dominated, but Rowley added her quirky touch with elements like layers of mesh, "silhouettes in motion" (dresses with a silhouette of the body off-center, as though it was moving away from the dress), and googly-eye brooches and eye prints. "I like to do one really cohesive statement for the runway," Rowley said after the show. "It really was all eyes on the clothes!" Her witty aesthetic has garnered her starlet fans like Julia Stiles, who sat front row. As usual, his collection of dresses and gowns are sure to be a hit for the Hollywood set. The palette consisted of pale pastels in lamé, embossed silks, brocades and chiffons. Signature Saab embellishement abounded--crystals sprinkled across a shoulder, rich jewel ornamentation. Front-rower Mischa Barton loved "the dress with the weird hips," a beige embellished number with an open back, while actress Michelle Yeoh could see herself in some on the red carpet. (02/05/09) (PARIS) Jean Paul Gaultier's Spring 2009 Couture collection married sharp tailored looks with exquisitely delicate fine-lined prints and cobwebby dresses that revealed his calligraphic inspiration this season. In fact, Gaultier took the economic fears in the world and responded to them with a playful wink by imbuing his clothes with curlicued scrollings, evoking the patterns used on bank notes. Corsetry was another focal point, mimicked in the square buns and sculptured headpieces. An unforgettable highlight was seeing 80s Chanel muse and model Inès de la Fressange take her runway strolls to the exuberant applause of the audience--for his bow, Gaultier ran after the model, trapping her onstage in a bear hug. Another charming moment? Tanya D's final plumaged look, when she mimed writing "Gaultier Paris" on the screen with her feather pen. It represents the intimacy and sensibility developed from a decade of working in the atelier, yet, it also offers an evolution." A nod towards Valentino staples was apparent, whether in the cream suits, red dresses or jewelled coats. The collection was understated, elegant and ladylike and the finale walk of all the models in their varying rainbow-hued ensembles was simply stunning. The best part of the show? Garavani himself, sitting front row and clapping enthusiastically, as though giving his blessing to the new designers.See less
