This example, of absolutely stunning colour, is a true 4-poster, the headboard being set in from the rear posts, which have hand-cut slow spiral twists (all cut in the same direction – a common feature in genuine old furniture). Very few beds of this period exist in their original form and indeed almost all 4-poster and tester beds have been altered in some way, usually to their detriment, or have been ‘made up’ from fragments of other furniture. As is the case with a large number of our commissions, this piece was made to fit into a specific space and, of course, to allow a high quality mattress and base unit to be fitted. This reproduction chair has been hand carved by master craftsmen in India in solid Burmese teak using the same "mortise and tenon" construction used over 100 years ago in the original chair. The bright cotton quilts used as upholstery were found in Rajasthan, India. The dimensions of the seat are 23" long, 22" wide at the back of the seat, 27" wide at the front of the seat, 39.25" high at the top of the chairback, 18.5" high at the seat.
