(12/23/08) When Walt Whitman heard America singing, these are the kind of pants it was singing in. They look different from the pants that came later; more important, they really are different, altogether tougher, being true, heavy-duty canvas. The men who dug the canals and cut through the mountains and drove the railroad spikes wore canvas pants like these. The pioneers who made it west on the wagon trains, 15 miles on a good day, they wore them. Miners and lumberjacks wore them. At least one poet I know of did, too. The pants that came later were fine; they still are. But when you put these pants on, you will feel an extra measure of character. Walt Whitman Pants (No. 1981). Cotton canvas, with big front pockets, watch pocket, welted rear pocket. Notched waistband and adjustable belt in back. Aged-brass shank buttons for suspenders (galluses, they called them). Mens even sizes: 32 through 46. Hemming (37 max.), $2 per pair.See less

(12/23/08) They built a town around this knife. Laguiole, in southern France. Unique design originated 1829, engineered to last a lifetime. Made exclusively by Societé Laguiole. (One craftsman, one knife). Handforged stainless steel blade. Solid brass endcaps. Palisandre wood handle. With awl for poking holes in things (sometimes necessary), corkscrew added in 1880 when bottled wine became popular. The last time you saw this knife, Yves Montand carved up an apple while Gerard Depardieu sweated in Manon of the Spring. Streamlined. Efficient. A little masterpiece. About 4-1/2" closed. French Herdsmans Knife (No. 3165), with leather sheath. (A rather splendid gift.)See less

(12/23/08) The secret thoughts of an entire country were once carried in leather bags exactly like this one. Except this one, a copy, isnt under lock and key in a museum. Its for sale. I borrowed an original from a friend, a retired mailman who, like thousands before him, was kind enough to test it out, for years, on the tree-lined streets of small towns everywhere. Before you were born. The test was successful; even though discontinued, it cant be improved upon. Its simply perfect as a device for carrying important ideas and feelings back and forth. And the same as with those old and scarce and beautiful mailbags, people will look forward to seeing what youve got inside. The Counterfeit Mailbag (No. 1005). Containing one vast unzippered pocket, and another zippered. Shoulder strap and handle. Size: 15" long x 7" wide x 12-1/2" tall. Strong, soft leather that will only get better. A beauty. Price: $298.See less

(12/23/08) Luggage from the venerable firm of Swaine Adeney Brigg Ltd. has been favored by the English upper crust since the days of King George III. It is rugged enough to survive decades of service under beastly conditions abroad. And more than distinguished enough to be observed boarding the R.M.S. Mauretania. If you think Swaine Adeney umbrellas are the worlds best, which they are, you ought to see their suitcases. The Chesterford Suitcase (No. 1926), made to orderfor us by the sameRoyal-Warrant holder that supplies brollies and leather goods to the Windsors. Hand-crafted (a 6-to-12 week process) using bridle-hide leather tanned with English oak bark. Natural linen-thread stitching. Solid brass fittings. Luxurious cotton twill lining. The result preserves traditional style while adding a few sensibletwistswheels and retractablehandles (scarce porters) and thick, protective canvas covers (automated baggage ramps at Heathrow).
