(07/08/09) Description: Often misnamed "tulip tree", this deciduous magnolia sports beautiful, huge, late winter blooms before the large magnolia leaves begin to emerge. It does not get the size of a southern magnolia, but more the smaller sweet bay size of twenty or so feet with a similar spread. The blooms, often 6" or more across, and the many named selections come in pinks and purple hues or a tinged white. If a late frost or freeze occurs, bud damage is inevitable. Saucer magnolia does not care for hot, full sun or drying winds so place them under the protection of shade and out of the way of the wind. If growing it in alkaline soil, watch for chlorosis and apply organic material such as pine straw and bark and use an acidifier if necessary.See less

If you plant one this year, you won't have a chance to change your mind about where you want it because it will be too big to move! And if fast growth isn't enough to talk you into trying this native beauty, take a look at the bark. Granted a few ignorant (I mean that in a positive way --- this is your opportunity to enlighten them....) people will ask what kind of disease causes the bark to peel off of your tree. The leaves of the river birch make a soft, rustling sound in the slightest wind, making it one of the closest versions we have to an Aspen. Expect a quick flash of yellow before it looses its leaves this month, depending on the nighttime temperatures. But the papery texture of the river birch through the winter, not its fall color, is its greatest asset in my book. Wildlife: Chickadees love the seeds, as do other small birds; several mammals browse the twigs.See less

They can be bought or trained as either a single or multi-trunk tree. The leaves are glossy green, heart shaped and deciduous (bare in the winter) with fall leaf color normally in the yellow family. Redbud trees have a beautiful umbrella form that make them a perfect candidate to spread over a patio or deck. Wildlife: early nectar source for returning butterflies, for moths and for bees; seeds a favorite of many bird species and foliage browsed by deer and larval host plant to Henry’s Elfin.See less

Grown for aesthetic rather than culinary merit (the small fruits or inedible for human consumption), the many ornamental callery pears all have good, reliable fall foliage. Although 'Bradford' is the one of the fastest growing and most recognized of named varieties, other varieties often have better application because of shape, smaller size, disease resistance, and lessened chance of storm damage. ('Bradford' does not have a main leader, but branches grow from a common point on the trunk creating crevices where ice can accumulate and break branches.) Other varieties for Texas include 'Aristocrat', ' Capital', and 'Trinity' to name a few. Check with your nursery or lanscaper for the best choice for your location.See less

The fern-like foliage is lovely in itself but it is the gorgeous pink spike of bloom that makes this a favorite for many southern gardens. Looking much like a miniature version of a wisteria, the late spring through fall bloom is not fragrant, but worth using for its drought resistance and hardiness. It will spread, naturalizing easily under moderate shade or even medium shade, but also will do well in some sun. Be sure that it has good drainage though, as it will not tolerate boggy clay.See less

Not only will crossvine add cooling to a western exposure wall without hurting the brick, it exhibits a beautiful bloom that the hummingbirds cannot resist. It has a small yellow flower in late spring throughout fall and "creeps" using runners that can be 2-3' long. Each place the joint of the runner touches earth, roots will take hold so that it can be invasive if not in a contained area. Creeping jenny does well in pots or hanging baskets if you don't want to have to keep it corralled. Or plant it into a niche in a rock pool wall for a cascade of hardy color. Another similar plant from the same family, golden globes, will have clusters of bright yellow flowers, but doesn't have as long a bloom period.See less
