(02/04/07) Book Description Roland's ubiquitous epaulets have recently come home from Rummyworld, "that vast, tumultuous terrorist theme park that used to be known as Iraq." At its chaotic outer edges, in al-Amok, Proconsul Duke survives numerous assassination attempts and the alleged courting of his sidekick by Iraqi suitors. But the serious new action is in New Orleans ("Looting, graft, profiteering ¿ it's all about the skill set, Honey") and Team Duke, like Halliburton, embarks for the Golf Coast, and sets up a command post on a FEMA-provided cruise ship. Elsewhere on the home front a fully-prostheticized B.D. is increasingly ambulatory, yet finds the struggle to reclaim his mind and emotions is by far the harder part of his journey. The collateral casualty count continues to rise as Zonker is forced to make a traumatic foray into the job market. The option-aware Alex launches an ambitious seven-school college tour, including Walden, where she is clued to her father's unbuttoned-down past....See less

(01/05/07) One of the most beautiful, flexible, and complex prefab systems we’ve covered in the last year is the Ray Kappe designed Living Home. For better and worse, it was covered this week in the LA Times by writer Christopher Hawthorne in the article “Such a deal?” Although he addressed several shortcomings that bother us about the current prefab industry, we can’t help but feel he cast a harsh light on prefabs in general based upon this high end model. “…the last thing the fledgling prefab movement needs at this point is aggressive marketing or more hype. What it needs is a reality check.” –Christopher Hawthorne, LA Times Yes, there’s a lot of prefab hype. We admit it; a bit of a prefab bubble, yet to be filled. But we consider this an important weekly topic for two important reasons. First, a handful of designs in the not so distant future will emerge at the head of the pack and deliver quality sustainable design – and we want to be at the front of this curve. The second, and perhaps more...See less

(12/23/06) Awesome receiver, lots of inputs. Simple and good autoconfiguration. It is able to convert all inputs to component. Don't use the HDMI but its there. I wish it had more than 3 S/PDIF ports but I'm an overly optical kinda person. Cheap receiver with all the features of higher priced ones. Lots of controls on front for the times when you've misplaced your remote (some people find this unattractive but personally like the buttons not covered up). No audio sync feature but it's not really a problem unless your projector or HDTV is slow. You can map component, coxial, and optical ports to any of the sources despite all of them having labels. (12/06/06) This is one of my favorite albums by Tim Buckley, and marks his first forays into a 'jazzier' style. Each of the albums he recorded in his brilliant, too-short career has a distinct personality -- the closest relative to HAPPY SAD would have to be the sadly out-of-print BLUE AFTERNOON (PLEASE, someone, make this available again!!!), released shortly after on Frank Zappa & Herb Cohen's Straight Records. Buckley, unhappy with his relationship with Elektra, had signed with Straight -- and the label began releasing albums by him before his contract with Elektra was fulfilled, causing a bit of confusion in the marketplace at the time. HAPPY SAD (Elektra) was followed closely by BLUE AFTERNOON (Straight), which was followed closely by LORCA (Elektra), then STARSAILOR (Straight again). Too much product in too short a time proved more than the market could bear -- and Tim's record sales (and to a lesser extent, his radio play) suffered. The fans he already had delighted, however -- more of his...See less

(11/26/06) Tonal quality and richness of sound is superior to other systems at any price. The retail on this unit was discounted nicely. WEAKNESSES: Minor annoyance of screw-down knobs on the rear of the speaker, especially on wall units requiring a ladder for installation. REVIEW: My RM 6800 unit is driven by an Onkyo TX-SR502 receiver. This 450 Watt receiver is perfect for our home theatre area. With 11 foot ceilings and a glass wall with wooden flooring, I doubted the power of the sub in this speaker package. The sound from such small (and beautiful) speakers is truly remarkable. I call it "sweet sound." The sub-woofer delivers the goods on DVD input and is very fine and satisfying on CD input. I switched from Bose 901's to the Polk system and I wish I had done it years ago.See less

(11/15/06) In case your dual-core desktop was starting to show its age, Dell is now cramming a quad-core processor inside its top of the line XPS desktop. The new XPS 710 packs Intel's 2.66GHz Core 2 Extreme QX6700 quad-core CPU, letting you throw any multi-threaded app you can find its way. For expansion, the desktop has four memory slots alongside seven expansion slots that comfortably fit as many video cards as you can afford. All this goodness is gonna cost you though. The XPS (available today) starts at $3,699. Having the extra horsepower under the hood sounds inviting, but personally there's few multi-threaded apps (if any) in my library to justify splurging close to $4 grand on a desktop. – Louis Ramirez Press Release [Dell] read more: * dell * dell xps 710 * pcs * quad-core * xps 710See less

(11/05/06) Samsung's SPH-S4300 MP3 Music Stick Phone idea looked like a winner, but this new tiny Samsung SGH-X830 cellphone takes that original design concept to the next level. (10/22/06) Alvar Aalto, 1936 The word aalto is Finnish for "wave," and in the 1930s Aalto captured the eternal wave in his classic series of vases. With a sensual and flowing form, they seem to mimic the water they hold. He integrated the natural contours of the Finnish landscape into his free-form vase series. This edition, inspired by one introduced at the 1936 Paris World's Fair, is taller and narrower than the classic Aalto vase and allows for easy flower arranging. The new Flaming Red edition of the Aalto series recalls the ruby red glass the designer utilized in creating the Aalto Flower for the 1939 World's Fair. Each lead-free crystal piece is mouth-blown into a mold and hand-polished. Made by Iittala. Hand-wash only. Designer Bio > Alvar AaltoSee less

(10/21/06) Volvo station wagons been popular with families looking for safe transportation. Over the years, they've come in a wide variety of styles, from basic cloth-upholstered grocery getters to leather-lined luxury haulers to turbocharged sport wagons. But they've all had one thing in common: safety that is engineered into every nook and cranny. In the mid-1990s, as consumer interest in SUVs was booming, Volvo decided to try and capitalize on buyer desires for family vehicles that didn't look like family vehicles. The company took a standard-issue V70 station wagon, raised the suspension, installed all-wheel drive, fastened some cladding to the body, added foglights and special trim and swiped the name of a high school sport for its new concoction. The Cross Country, as it was known, employed the same winning philosophy as the Subaru Outback. Turn a car into an SUV and buyers would come. Come they did, and soon the Volvo Cross Country was accounting for half of all V70 sales. When the V70 was...See less

(10/05/06) The elegantly curved cabinet of the top-of-the-range 800D stands on a heavy cast aluminium plinth that also houses the substantial crossover. The twin 250mm (10 in) diameter Rohacell® sandwich cone woofers have a radiating area equivalent to a single 380mm (15 in) driver and can deliver prodigious amounts of bass when called upon to do so, even in large listening rooms. Bass output is reinforced by a down-firing Flowport™ and is configured to have a taut characteristic, enabling the 800D to work optimally in a wide range of ‘real world’ rooms and acoustics. Thanks to the geometry of the Marlan® midrange 'head' enclosure and the separate tweeter on top, the 800D can project an uncannily realistic and three-dimensional image that is more stable with changes in listener position than more conventionally shaped speakers. Powerful it may be, but the 800D can also portray the finest nuances from the recording. So good is it at revealing detail that top recording engineers have said that it...See less
