Well I'll admit I had the same reaction when I first heard about cloth pads, but I did a little research I decided to give them a try. After nearly a year of using them, I can safely say I'd never go back to disposables. Since I know how to sew, and I was on a really tight budget, I decided to make my own pads. Nothing against all the wonderful cloth pads for sale out there, but by making my own I could get the exact color and style I wanted. After a bit of tinkering, I came up with a few patterns I liked, and decided to share them. I wanted to give something back, since I would have never got started my own without the inspiration I got from all the wonderful people and web pages out there. These are turned and topstitched pads with custom absorbancy sewn in, and you also have the ability to add in extra inserts for heavy days. Of all of the pads I've made, these are the ones I reach for first so I wanted to share the instructions with other moms. FAQ: How do I use/wash cloth pads? Here's what I do, but everyone is different! I made about 30 pads (over the years) so I only have to wash them once per month. As I use the pads, I put the used ones into a large diaper bag next to the toilet. Usually by the end of my period, I wash them (if I remember right away). Definitely I wash before my next cycle! I put the pads (without bothering to pull out inserts, presoak, or anything) into the washing machine along with the diaper bag, and wash with cold water and detergent. Then I do a second wash with hot water and no detergent (this is the same way I wash our diapers).... See less

Soaker Pattern Newer Soaker Pattern Soaker pattern for fleece XL-XXXL Patterns Instructions I am a novice at pattern making, so please excuse any errors in pattern markings. This is designed for a 1/4 inch seam allowance, but if you would be more comfortable sewing with a 1/2 inch seam allowance, just add an extra 1/4 inch to the pattern. It goes from newborn to Xlarge. This was the barn: This time around I wanted a smaller, lighter version, that my kids could carry around. The barn was made of plywood, covered in batting and fabric. For this version I'm replacing the wood with plastic canvas (the plastic sheets sold at craft stores for doing cross-stitch on) . This is where you'll need to guess on how much you need to take in. This sweater was an adult large, so it was rather large in the sleeves. I had to pin in by about 2" on the front and back to make the pants small enough. | Sew or serge together the pieces where you've pinned them. You will probably need to reinforce both of the crotch seams if you notice they aren't connecting perfectly. | Overlock the top edge, if you want. If you don't have a serger, it's not necessary. If you’re using patterns that are already oriented appropriately, Heat-N-Bond may be a better choice because you won’t have to fiddle with the extra paper. Using a stabilizer under your work can make the process easier, especially on lightweight fabrics and stretch knits. It prevents your fabric from shifting and pulling as you stitch around your appliqué. I like to use iron-on paper stabilizer, which can be torn away when you’re finished. This product is especially nice to use when placing an appliqué over patchwork, since it keeps your seams from shifting about while you work. If your project can use some added support, a lightweight fusible interfacing does the same job and won’t have to be removed when you’re done... See less

I used three inch squares and a 1/4 inch seam allowance for the cube displayed above. You can go smaller, but keep in mind you will be doing a lot of turning and seaming from within at the end, so really small squares may be hard. Start big and move to smaller squares as you get comfortable with the technique. Divide your squares into two groups: one group with 16 squares of A,B,C (total of 48 squares) and a second group with 8 squares of A,B,C (total 24 of squares). Set the second group aside. Further subdivide the first group into six sets of eight squares, with two types of fabric in each set. You will use these blocks to create the foundation blocks, the six outer sides of the cube, so fabric layout becomes important. Here is a sample guide, which I used for my cube. Yesterday, when we posted the great fabrics from Repro Depot that we thought would inspire anyone to get sewing, we said that making a bib was "as basic as it gets." Now, that may not be completely true when you don't even know where to start. We're not master seamstresses by any stretch of the imagination and even making a bib can give us a headache, but a bib gives high returns for relatively low effort. All you have to do it ditch the complicated steps (like encasing an entire bib in double fold bias tape). Unless you're good and stuff and sewing and then you can embellish away! Here's a basic bib pattern we threw together (with instructions) that should help you showcase the fabulous fabrics that you find.
