(07/27/07) Flattering ribbed sweater knit in the round without seams. Darts are carefully shaped to maintain the flow of the rib pattern and create a perfect fit. The unusual neckline frames your face at the front and curves round to form an interesting detail at the back. Tubular cast ons create perfect edges, while the neck edge can be neatly finished with a tubular bind off, or for a slightly different effect the picot bind off pictured. A simple variation on the basic rib pattern creates flared cuffs for the long sleeves. Snow White was designed to flatter a wide range of shapes and sizes and so the pattern is given in seven sizes, ranging from a 28 - 54” bust. For a perfect individual fit the stitches can be slipped onto scrap yarn at key points and the sweater in progress can be tried on. Sizes This pattern is designed to fit the following sizes, based on body measurements: xs: 28”-30” / 71-76cm bust circumference s: 32”-34” / 81-86cm bust circumference m: 36”-38” / 91-97cm bust...See less

(12/13/06) You ain't seen nothing yet. It really shines on the foot. I like the details a lot - maybe you can even see the way the well-behaved pattern flows into the slightly out-thrust slipped stitches of the heel (not that it didn't take some beating into submission for it to do so). (12/10/06) Materials It takes approximately 200 yds. of yarn to make a 4’ scarf, 300 yds. to make a 6’ scarf. (Your exact mileage will depend on how heavy the yarn is and what needle size you choose.) Use all one yarn, or experiment with alternating among multiple yarns to get a striped or patchwork effect. Variegated and self-striping yarns are particularly well-suited for this project. For a fairly solid-looking scarf, use the needle size recommended on the ball band of your chosen yarn. Go up a couple of needle sizes for a lacier-looking scarf. Terms defined Inc = knit into front and back of stitch SSK = slip next two stitches individually as if to knit, put tip of left needle into slipped stitches and knit them together SKP = slip one as if to knit, K1, pass slipped stitch over Instructions Cast on 1 st. Row 1: Inc into stitch (2 sts) Row 2: Inc into first stitch, K to end. (3 sts) Repeat Row 2 until one side edge of your triangle (i.e., not the “live” edge on the needle) is as wide as you...See less

(10/12/06) ( If you're not a spinner and you don't want to be and you don't want to wade through this, the recipe for the scarf is at the end.) I'm sure that this is a subtle element of my personality and that nobody has really noticed, so I'll point out to you that I may be just a smidge on the obsessive side. This wee quirk occasionally pays off, and my fixation over the last 24 hours with the Grafton Fiber batt has totally encouraged this trait. I loved the progression of colours, and I was determined to have a project at the end of it that reflected that. This can be sort of tricky with spinning. How you pull something off the batt, whether you spin woollen or worsted, pre-draft or not...they all effect the result you get, with occasionally unpredictable results. (I actually have to credit Deb Menz with helping me to figure this out. Her book Color in Spinning really helped me learn how I could spin to get what I want, instead of spinning the way I like to and learning how to enjoy the...See less

(09/20/06) Montse Stanley discusses this technique in The Handknitter’s Handbook, referring to it as Helix stripes. Her directions don’t quite make sense to me however, so here is what I worked out. In the process of making this pictorial guide for you teddy got a new hat, so everyone’s happy. This technique can be used to knit single row stripes in the round, or as I did on my stripy jumper, it can be used for wider stripes. The important thing is that you need 1 ball of yarn for each different stripe in the sequence, not each different colour. So for my jumper I needed 1 ball of dark green and 2 of light green to make a stripe sequence that was 1 row of dark green and 2 rows of light green. For teddy’s hat which has a sequence of four single row stripes, I used 1 ball of each of 4 colours. You then need to divide your total number of sts per round into roughly equal sections. The number of sections should be 1 less than your total number of stripes in the sequence. So for my stripy jumper I...See less

(09/11/06) In Eugene, Oregon we have an outdoor market every Saturday from April until November. Not only is it a great time in the sun, but a great place to get organic veggies and food grown nearby. I made this with the outdoor market use in mind. It’s a versatile bag that will stretch to the shape of it’s odd shaped contents perfectly. It can either be made as a hand bag or with a shoulder strap. Make several as reusable grocery bags or one for the occasional weekend picnic.See less

(09/01/06) By Joyce Williams Joyce Williams became interested in Latvian weaving designs—and turning them into knitted designs—after examining some of the charts in Jane Evans book, “A Joy Forever: Latvian Weaving, Traditional and Modified Uses.” Williams found great pleasure in seeing the result as weaving squares became knitted designs in her hands. The result is this book of charts, techniques, and Williams own designs from Latvian patterns. 165 pages. Schoolhouse Press, 2000. Hardcover.See less

(07/31/06) Beehive pattern no. 481 - “Handsome Morale Builders” (presumably for the boys off at war, via the miracle of black and white photography!) Pattern after the jump… Materials: The original yarn called for Beehive Scotch Fingering, 2 ply (1 oz skeins) Size 9 & 10 - 4 skeins, size 11 - 5 skeins. Beehive Scotch Fingering appears to have had 300 yards/50 grams (about 170 yards to the ounce); the closest substitute we can find is Brown Sheep NatureSpun Fingering, which comes in a million colors and is very cheap. You may also have luck trying these with a double strand of Helen’s Lace, if you’re feeling spendy. The pattern calls for Royal Society double pointed sock needles, no. 1, which should work fine for the subbed yarn (BE SURE TO CHECK GAUGE.) Gauge = 9 sts= 1″ Change of size occurs in length of foot only. Cast on 110 sts over 2 needles. Remove the extra needle and divide the sts on three needles, having 37 sts on 1st and 3rd needles and 36 sts on 2nd needle. Join, being careful not to...See less

(05/09/06) I really enjoyed making little sweater ornaments last year, but this holiday season, as I've spent the days leading up to the holidays in the great outdoors, I found a different inspiration for some knitted decorations. Between the beautiful ginko trees in the yard where I'm staying with friends, the lace knitting that I've done recently, and my current interest in knitting with wire, I was inspired to play around and create some lace leaf ornaments. The concept is simple. You just take a repeat of your favorite traditional lace pattern, and knit it with a strand of mohair. I used a fine kid mohair silk blend for the white leaves and a thicker wool mohair blend for the colored leaves. The silver leaf with beads is simply the same pattern without the yarn, using a thicker silver wire. Mine was 26 guage sterling. I'm copyrighting the recipe, since I think it's such a cool concept that I'd like to keep the credit for it, but I think it would be really cool to see what other lace patterns...See less

(04/26/06) I was wearing this scarf over the weekend while I was at the Knit Out in Boulder, and I got a number of comments and requests for the pattern. Here's the story behind the scarf. A couple years ago I was in SanFransisco and happened on the yarn shop, Imagiknit. What a fun shop! The owners, Allison and Sara, are so personable and helpful. I would recommend stopping in if you are in the Bay area anytime soon! There were a ton of scarves knit up on a rack as samples, and that's where I spied this lovely one. I had never seen Manos Del Uruguay before and I fell in love with this colorway, it's color 113 (they are calling it wildflowers). The scarf pattern came with the yarn, one of the shop girls had typed it up. Now, everytime I wear it, someone comments on it and I've been asked so many times for the pattern that I finally called the store and asked if I could give it out. They just laughed and told me that they appreciated the call, but that it was just a stitch pattern out of a pattern...See less
