(07/10/06) A way to move towards a service-oriented architecture, is for the application managed approach to re-focus on security as an API/SPI interface with SPI providers adhering to standardized interfaces (e.g., JAAS, JACC, web services based authorization). Within a service-oriented architecture, the applications can then move to an infrastructure managed approach to security as a first step. Migrating security is not something that is achieved overnight (if ever). It is important to move towards this approach in a logical manner. The first step is to move as much of the application managed security functionality towards implementation of standardized interfaces for security providers. This starts the process of common security functionality, as shown in Figure 6, below.See less

(07/10/06) While giving a presentation at the Enterprise Architect Summit in Barcelona, on the subject of ESB and other SOA-related infrastructures, I got into a public altercation with a couple of Microsoft guys who were in the audience. It turned into a pretty heated debate over core architectural fundamentals, which we hammered out in front of an audience of about 75 unsuspecting conference-goers. I have to say that in all my years of public speaking this sort of spontaneous public debate has never happened quite like this. The conversation that ensued brought to light some really important issues regarding some fundamental differences between the use of an ESB as the foundation of building a Service Oriented Architecture vs. using a combination of Biztalk and WCF (formerly known as Indigo). As part of defining your strategy for building and deploying a SOA, you may be considering a variety of SOA infrastructure support products. As an enterprise architect you are probably faced with these...See less

(07/10/06) Service-oriented architecture (SOA) -- especially web services-based SOA -- has been the talk of the IT community. It's almost impossible to discuss corporate technology plans or strategies without discussing SOA. That's because many IT professionals see SOA as a way to speed up the application development process. They also see in SOA a way to become more agile and more adaptable in responding to changing business needs. A previous article introduced SOA and web services concepts, and described the basic technologies and tools available to implement a web services-based SOA. With these technologies and tools, companies are already starting to build applications based on an SOA approach. For example, RouteOne LLC, a credit aggregation management company for the automobile industry, implemented a web services-based SOA project that resulted in dramatically streamlining and speeding up a number of vehicle financing software applications for car dealerships. (07/10/06) Frank Mueller (mueller.frank@de.ibm.com), IT Architect, IBM Global Services AMS 10 Jan 2004 This article describes the many different job roles involved in Web services development projects, what their goals are, what their tasks are and how they work with each other. It does not go into detail over the actual tasks to be performed (such as creating a doc/literal service from WSDL); rather it tries to give IT staff of any background overall guidance on what they should be thinking about when approaching a Web services project. The intention is that this article can help an IT department figure out how to organize its projects better and plan for the full picture. Web services have passed the days when only a few enthusiasts played around with immature yet highly-praised technology, struggling to get anything -- even simplistic, unsecured exchanges of basic data structures up and running. In contrast, during the last two years, the technology has proven its maturity on numerous...See less

(07/10/06) The IBM(R) programming model for Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) enables non-programmers to create and reuse IT assets without mastering IT skills. The model includes component types, wiring, templates, application adapters, uniform data representation, and an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB). This is the first in a series of articles about the IBM SOA programming model and what is required to select, develop, deploy, and recommend programming model elements. The content presented here takes into account that developers come to this model with different skill levels and roles. 14 Jun 2005See less

(07/10/06) Clive Gee (clive@us.ibm.com), Senior Solution Architect, IBM 02 Jun 2004 Experience from first Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) implementation projects suggest that existing development processes and notations such as Object-Oriented Analysis and Design (OOAD), Enterprise Architecture (EA) frameworks, and Business Process Modeling (BPM) only cover part of what is required to support the architectural patterns currently emerging under the SOA umbrella. Thus, there is a need for an enhanced, interdisciplinary service modeling approach. In a recent interview at Info World (see Resources), Grady Booch stated that "the fundamentals of engineering like good abstractions, good separation of concerns never go out of style", but he also pointed out that "there are real opportunities to raise the level of abstraction again." Past experience indicates that the abstraction level has to be raised up to the business domains a company deals with, taking the entire enterprise IT landscape into...See less

(07/10/06) Last week at Java One, Ashesh Badani, a Sun SOA marketing person, wanted to have lunch with me to talk about WS-*. He brought along T.N. Subramaniam, Director of Technology for RouteOne, a car-loan aggregator. (Sun loves RouteOne, they’re a reference customer not only for us but for SeeBeyond, which we’re in the process of acquiring). Anyhow, neither Ashesh nor Ashok Mollin, a Sun guy who’s been engaged at RouteOne, got a chance to say much, because T.N. and I hit it off and had a good time talking about Web Services. Which RouteOne are doing, big time and for big bucks and successfully. They are exactly the kind of people that those of us struggling in the WS-* morass ought to be looking to for lessons. This, I think, will be the first ever ongoing piece structured as an interview; with T.N.’s help, I’ve tried to reconstruct our conversation at lunch. I think some conclusions are obvious, but I’ll leave them for you to draw.See less

(07/10/06) I am in sunny Lisbon today working with our EMEA sales teams and I am encouraged, as I always am, about the high adoption of SOA in Europe. Most technology trends tend to lag in Europe by anywhere from 3 months to a full year. However, it appears that SOA adoption is happening at a rapid pace throughout Europe, at least within large enterprises. A great example is in Italy, where we are working with some of the leading telecommunications providers. These companies are moving to SOA as quickly and as whole-heartedly as any of the companies I work with in North America. This trend seems to be consistent across industries, and even into the government sector. The good news is that this high rate of adoption within large companies will lead to broader adoption in smaller companies going into next year. (07/10/06) Most enterprises have made extensive investments in system resources over the course of many years. Such enterprises have an enormous amount of data stored in legacy enterprise information systems (EIS), so it's not practical to discard existing systems. It's more cost-effective to evolve and enhance EIS. But how can this be done? Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) provides a cost-effective solution. SOA is not a new concept. Sun defined SOA in the late 1990's to describe Jini, which is an environment for dynamic discovery and use of services over a network. Web services have taken the concept of services introduced by Jini technology and implemented it as services delivered over the web using technologies such as XML, Web Services Description Language (WSDL), Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), and Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration(UDDI). SOA is emerging as the premier integration and architecture framework in today's complex and heterogeneous computing environment....See less
