(11/25/08) I think 1993's "Get a Grip" was a balanced and well executed album that was kind of the end of what I call their "second era" (1985-1993). Their raw, powerful playing stays intact but the pop side of things get's adjusted a bit to give us some fresh, commercial, video, and radio friendly tracks. Their ability to slowly change some of the sound, and to evolve, without tarnishing thier image as old school rockers from the 70's, is really quite amazing. The album has more than the normal track listing we are used to from them, and instead of featuring 14 "rockers and ballads" more or less gives us fun rock tunes, some serious, deep melodic treasures, as well as of course, a fun/funny track or even just lyric here and there. "Eat the Rich" "Get a Grip" and "Fever" embrace the youth of today with the signature fast rolling guitars and beats from frontman Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry. For those who lived through the era, the full-page photos are bound to get some synapses firing (presumably bypassing all those drug-damaged neural junctions). This is essentially a People magazine version of the sixties: lots of breathless headlines and celebrity photos. Writer Barry Miles has dug up some good music gossip, including not very flattering John Lennon anecdotes. Some serious issues of the era get raised - Vietnam, civil rights, woman's liberation, gay rights - but in a, well, glossy coffee-table-book way. The editorial difficulty in putting together a book of this sort is deciding whether you're celebrating sex, drugs and rock and roll or chronicling a culture in crisis. (11/10/08) I purchased this video series for my high school History of Rock and Roll class. I was thoroughly impressed by a majority of the material in this series. Good points: Excellent footage of rock and roll heroes (Beatles, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis, Led Zepplin, etc.) as well as lesser known groups (The Hollies, Gerry and the Pacemakers, etc.). Outstanding interviews from artists and figures such as Hank Ballard, Carl Perkins, Ozzie Osborn, Dick Clark, Bono, Eddie Van Halen, Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen, Little Richard, Mick Jaggar, Tom Petty, Lindsey Buckingham, and countless others. Footage of various historical events help put the music in perspective (civil rights, Vietnam, sexual revolution, etc.). Bad Points: Some material may not be for younger audiences. Nearly all volumes (2 & 3 excluded) have some PG-13 language (including Pete Townsend's liberal use of the F-word). Gilbert snapped over 900 of the most candid shots ever taken of Dylan, less than a year before he became completely inaccessible to the public.
