"Superbad" follows the pre-College separation and sexual anxieties of best friends Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera) over the course of twenty-four liquor and testosterone-filled hours. "Superbad", first off, is an excellent movie - it's literate, likeable and there's plenty going on. Comparisons with "American Pie" are inevitable - same subject matter and so forth - but "Superbad" is a lot more demanding, and a lot more rewarding because of that. Cera, Hill and Mintz-Plasse (Fogell) give outstanding performances, particularly the former pair - there's a believable and honest chemistry between these two actors and their friendship is completely plausible. Cera's the stronger of the two actors - his Evan's a believable and sympathetic kid - but Hill is equally strong during their shared scenes. While Fogell might have been included simply for laughs, Mintz-Plasse does an excellent job with what he's given, and his scenes of slapstick and comic sexual redemption are excellent... See less

Unlike my video tape version, it's great to be able to skip to a particular song I wish to view. INTO THE WOODS is such a great show. The first act is hilarious and witty. It very smartly weaves together all those fairy tales so familiar to us all. Then act two makes us look at them through adult eyes. I think Sondheim and Lapine are telling us that in fairy tales as well as "real" life, the simple words "I wish..." are truly the beginning of whatever story each of us is about to tell. They counsel us to be careful of what we wish in life -- our wishes effect everyone. My favorite song in this production is "The Last Midnight" which is performed by Bernadette Peters as the Witch. Of course the story, all about merry murderesses and tabloid fame, is set in the Roaring '20s, but Chicago reeks of '70s disenchantment--this isn't just Fosse's material, it's his attitude, too. That's probably why the movie's breathless observations on fleeting fame and fickle public taste already seem dated. However, Renée Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones are beautifully matched as Jazz Age vixens, and Richard Gere gleefully sheds his customary cool to belt out a showstopper. The movie has never been able to shake this image, and that is a shame. We should remember that "Wizard of Oz" wasn't a giant box office hit in 1939, and only after it was made an annual event on television did it become a classic in the eyes of the public. "Alice in Wonderland" deserves far more attention than it has ever received. The characters are wonderful. The music is humable, even singable. It's a short film that takes the viewer into a dreamland, and Disney's animated version stands up against any of the other live versions that have popped up over the years. Steven Spielberg directed all three films, which are set in the late 1930s and early '40s: the comic book-like Raiders of the Lost Ark, the spooky, Gunga Din-inspired Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and the cautious but entertaining Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Even if that is lost in the day to day world we live in, there is still an appetite for it. Our art, video games, TV, media, and films serve it up.
