Paintings from Sarah Morris’ current series, Beijing, are symbolic of some of the architectural challenges that this city is facing in light of the upcoming Olympic Games in 2008. The Rings series not only connects to the Olympic rings and the event that will greatly affect Beijing, but also to the congested traffic arteries called the Ring Roads, emblematic of larger scale issues. The Origami series is based on a simple process that originated in China and that can result in increasing complexity. Both series make good use of the artist’s strength in bold colour and form, as well as hearty amounts of household paint. See less

Yuken Teruya cuts trees out of paper bags and cardboard tubes, creating forests of delicate branches and the shadows they cast. Initially the trees were cut out of carrier bags turned on their sides. The paper cuts were made from the top and the resulting tree was popped out to form a diorama framed by its own shadowbox, the bag itself. These bags span the range from high-end designer shopping bags to the ubiquitous Macdonald’s takeout bags and the cardboard tubes can easily be identified as humble toilet paper rolls. But the work itself is extremely precise, with the artist basing the cuts on photographs of actual trees. See less

At first glance, this room appears to be a work in progress, littered with tools and the grubby detritus found in any construction site. It is, of course, an illusion, an accumulation of polyurethane sculptures carefully carved and painted to seem indistinguishable from the originals. This series of installations are like three-dimensional versions of a trompe-l’oeil still-life painting, designed to give the illusion of reality. Over the years, Fischli / Weiss have made a number of these works: Untitled (Tate) (1993-2006), which is included here, appeared in the opening displays at Tate Modern in 2000. the heart of these works is the artists’ love of paradox and mischief. The room demands a double-take. It looks like the chaos of an artist’s studio where their work might be made, yet of course, what we see is the actual artwork, every smear and grain of dust artfully placed. Son et Lumière – Le rayon vert (1990), is an animated ‘light sculpture’ whose simple materials – a plastic cup, a flashlight fitted with red and green gels and a revolving record-player turntable – generate a captivating and a kaleidoscopic light projection. This clever ‘low-fi’ assemblage encapsulates the artists’ interest in creating spectacular effects using ordinary materials. The Way Things Go (1986-7) similarly enlists an assortment of objects, including tyres and chairs, as components in an absurdly amusing and explosive chain reaction lasting thirty minutes. The film’s humour lies in the deliberate misuse of these objects, as they are co-opted into performing roles outside their normal function. Reminiscent of the physical comedy of silent films starring Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton, here the actors are steaming-kettles mounted on roller-skates, rotating dustbin bags, rickety stepladders set in motion, buckets, tyres, bottles and planks. The photographs which make up the series Equilibres / Quiet Afternoon (1984) show precariously balanced sculptures at what appears to be the exact moment before their collapse. Perhaps not such a quiet afternoon then. Everyday items such as vegetables, kitchen utensils, tyres, chairs, and tools, are piled in elaborate configurations that – for an instant, at least – appear stable. ‘We discovered that we could leave all formal decisions to equilibrium itself’, Fischli has said of these sculptures. ‘There was apparently no way to do it ‘better’ or ‘worse’, just ‘correctly’.’ of the titles suggest dramatic scenarios, endowing the objects with personalities. The Sausage Photographs (1979) was Fischli / Weiss’s first collaborative project, and exemplifies their inventive and humorous use of everyday materials to create a compelling fictional world. Each photograph documents a dramatic scene composed using sausages, various cold meats and common household goods. Reminiscent of a children’s game, with its unbounded capacity for make-believe, the artists transform crumpled bedding into an Alpine landscape and slices of luncheon meat into patterned carpets. In The Accident, two sausage cars have collided in a narrow street lined with cardboard buildings while on-lookers, in the form of cigarette butts, stare at the wreckage. It is an intriguing contradiction that in their search for beauty Fischli / Weiss have explored some of the most clichéd and familiar themes in art history – sunsets, dramatic landscapes, flora and fauna – and some of the most humdrum and unexpected – such as airports, suburban housing estates and motorways. In Fischli / Weiss’s universe, both types of subject matter merit equal scrutiny. images of nondescript airports focus on the banal side of air travel; the fuel vehicles, the baggage trucks, the daily routine of the airport worker.
