Our children, now in their late 30's, received a book such as this from their elementary school. I thought then and still do that every child should have one to capsulize their school years. It is so easy to record everything and keep their report cards, special papers, etc. all in one place rather than in a box that will never be gone through. I gave our children theirs in 2006 and they were surprised, and happy, that I had done this for them. I highly recommend this book, which we gave to our 5 grandchildren for Christmas this past year. As an alternate for small cylinder shaped beads, I used cut-up straws. Lots of fun. - elizabeth s My 8-year-old son and I made these for a teacher appreciation gift. We made one to represent each child in his classroom. I bought a decorated flower pot and filled it with coffee beans so they would stand up. I used a label maker to stick each child's name to the bottom of the pencil. She loved it! Everyone had so much fun guessing whose pencil it was. She also used it to randomly call on children during discussions or to divide up into teams fairly. TIPS: Use a hole punch for the arm holes. Just flatten the pencil grip and punch! Also, I used pipe cleaners instead of craft wire. It was much easier to work with. - Diane H Unlike most Family Fun crafts, this one is a dud. My 8-year-old son - who's very crafty - was near tears because the hair wasn't working and wiring the beads and poking them through the pencil tip wasn't working. My daughters, Sarah, 8, and Hannah, 5, love to bring along supplies for drawing and coloring when we travel. These fit well in a small backpack or tote bag. We simply decorated the outside with stickers. A hard-plastic bandage box works well, also. - Lisa B Instead of using a magnet (that will turn up missing), try using hot glue after the child(ren) have finished drawing on their paper. It appears by the display/picture online that you will recieve two of each of the colors, you don't, so don't expect it - you get 5 of one color, 1 of another, 4 of some other color, etc. My daughters weren't disappointed (these were a surprise)our motto in our home, "you get what you get, and don't be upset." They think the pencils are pretty, ESPECIALLY with their names on them!! The little pencil bag is really cute! My children are pleased.(afterthought) But really, no one said how the colors are distributed for these pencils, it's not in the description.
