(05/27/12) This EP is a preview for the full-length album "Nia" by Blackalicious. It contains seven tracks, four of which are present on "Nia". The three exclusive tracks are good. One of them, "Alphabetic Aerobics", is excellent. Here, rapper The Gift of Gab shows off his rapid-fire delivery in verses for each letter of the alphabet. The song gets faster and faster as he progresses through the letters. "A2G" is a similar workout in consonance, but with slower delivery and only the letters A through G. "Back to the Essence" features guest rapper Lateef the Truth Speaker. "Deception" is the most structured song here. The lyrics are a narrative about a rapper who becomes seduced by wealth. It emphasizes, without direct reference, the underground roots and ideals that Blackalicious have stayed true to since their first EP "Melodica" was released in 1994 on Mo'Wax records. Albums by The Lifesavas, Lyrics Born, The Maroons, and Gift of Gab garnered widespread acclaim and catapulted the record label to a new level. An absolutely mind-blowing, life-altering, existence-reaffirming tour with nearly the whole crew displayed the cohesiveness, brotherhood, and outright talent of this label. One cannot deny, though, the significant role that Blackalcious' Nia and Blazing Arrow played in giving 2003-2004 the forum in which to shine. I remember hearing of Blackalicious on a very obscure Philly jamband's listeserv, and within a year, Best Buy was advertising Blazing Arrow in their newspaper inserts. Blazing Arrow picks up where Nia left off, but features a more mature-sounding duo utilizing even tighter beats and more cerebral rhymes. When they're teaming up with fellow West Coasters like Dilated Peoples' Rakka Iriscience ("Passion") or Jurassic 5's Chali 2NA ("4,000 Miles"), the results are off the meter. INTELLIGENT LYRICS (no cheeseiness)... refreshing innovative music (the tracks are sufficiently different)... music is true to trance (not commercial or pop). NO FILLERS- all good tracks. Excellent flow of one track to the next as well. Engelina exhibits good vocal range, easily... and complements the music perfectly. I'd say Engelina is in the same league with Justine Suissa of OceanLab. I prefer this album to the Ian Van Dahl one another person raved about, which is also good but doesn't have the same flow as this. Have a look at FRAGMA, Milk Inc and Sylver as well. One thing though: the first two tracks on the CD sound like a vinyl record. There is a background hiss and slight scratchiness... NOT good for this calibre of music. Other than that, the rest of the production is clean. So the CD is really 4.5 stars (but there aren't half-stars). Don't hesitate to buy the album though.See less

I think this is for those who can't get through the longer release or people still hooked onto Backstreet or NSYNC, but needs to know who was doing it first--NE. But this is just as superb, as NE's most familiar hits are represented, from Cool It Now to Telephone Man, to Little Bit of Love, to If It Isn't Love, to Rain to Hit Me Off and I'm Still in Love With You. Fully entertaining in its short span, and the mastering and sounds are so clear on here! You can hear the harmonies on everything. The 20th Century Masters series did a nice job on this group's album and the right 11 songs were chosen!See less

Though "Club Dread" feels more firmly in the house side, it still has a fun vibe to keep it spry. If you prefer dub in a more 'pure' form, you can't go wrong with "Hot Spot Splash." But the house influences predominate: "Tangerine," for instance, has a warmth to it that suggests jazzhouse, and Ursula Rucker's vocals on "Pieces" lends an additional melodic note. "Caramel" emphasizes the dub in a big way, with a pseudo-African flute to highlight the roots element, while "Worship" suggests the Timewriter's classic track "Skywritings." But it's "Velocity" that brings the dub half and the house half together in harmony at last.See less

It was a smart piece of market exposure for Edie Brickell and Harper Simon to pitch their new collaboration on NPR, where I and 12 million other listeners were treated to generous samples of their new creation on All Things Considered. I've had The Heavy Circles in permanent rotation ever since. Each track has a distinct flavor and feel, and all complement Brickell's ethereal voice and considerable artistic range. Harper Simon both produced and plays guitar and bass on the album with Brickell (who incidentally is his stepmother) and is responsible for pulling together a number of other talented musicians on this project, including Sean Lennon and Martha Wainwright. The first track, "Henri", washes over you with vocals and instruments blending in different time signatures, and only later did I recognize in the lyrics an homage to Matisse.
