Create a new Layer Select the color you wish the edge to be (you can fill this edge later with a paper) Select the Brush tool (B) and then choose a round hard brush (100%) from the Basic Brush set. Change the spacing to 100% and choose a diameter according to the size of the scallop you wish. Position the brush at the top left hand corner of the photo on the new layer. Hold the SHIFT key and drag to the top right hand corner. Holding the shift key will ensure the line remains straight. Release the shift key and don’t worry if at this point the frame is shorter or longer than the actual photo. Click on the last dot, hold down the SHFT key and drag to the bottom right corner. That Photoshop technique was based on the Film Grain filter. Most of these kind of conversions are done in Photoshop with filters like Smart Blur, Find Edges or Glowing Edges. In this Photoshop tutorial I'm showing a recently discovered technique that I haven't seen anywhere else and that's the reason why I'm sharing it with you. One of the fastest and easiest ways to spice up the colors and contrast in your photos is to use the "Curves" feature. Although it takes a little bit of practice to master, once you get the hang of it, you will probably use it on most of your photos in one way or another. In fact, you can even save your settings as a preset if you find that you are making the same adjustments time after time. The basic premise behind Curves is that you can adjust the entire tonal range of your image from shadows to highlights. The Levels dialog offers similar options but it is more limited. Curves is a more comprehensive -- albeit more complex -- way to make adjustments to your image. In other words, the changes are more precise and fine tuned. In my example I have only adjusted the midtones (the center of the diagonal line) and the shadows (the bottom left point on the line). The tonal range of an image, at its most simple, refers to the range of tones between the lightest and darkest areas of an image. For example, an image with a wide tonal range will include both dark and light areas (and a range of tones in between), whereas an image with a narrow tonal range will cover a more restricted range; i.e it may be predominantly composed of mid-tones. The following two images illustrate this point. IMAGE 1, for example, has a very restricted tonal range. If you hover your mouse over the image you can see from the histogram that the tones for this image are bunched in the middle of the range; hence it’s dull and flat appearance. IMAGE 2, by contrast, has been adjusted using a Curve, and as you can see from its histogram, the tonal range is much wider, greatly improving the image. At this stage it’s worth spending a bit of time making sure we understand exactly what a histogram is telling us as it’s an especially useful way of evaluating an image prior to making... See less

Photoshop gives you even more control of the drop shadow style layer by allow you to adjust the light angle, spread of the shadow and other specification. These drop shadow style layers apply the same effect uniformly across the object. However most paper and photographs do not lay rigidly on a page. Even glued or otherwise fastened photographs have slight waves and bends that effect the shadow it casts. This tutorial walks you through the steps of recreating a realistic drop shadow for paper and photographs. I still usually rely on the standard drop shadow style layers for most of my paper elements but I will often use this technique on the main photo(s) in a layout. You will need an eyelet and a ribbon. Start by opening your eyelet and ribbon and dragging them onto a common canvas. Duplicate the eyelet by clicking on the eyelet layer in the layers palette and dragging it to the new layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette. The new layer icon looks like a sheet of paper with the bottom corner folded up. Use your move tool to line up your eyelets about 1 and a half inches apart along a stretch of the ribbon. Click on the ribbon layer in the layers palette to set it as your active layer. Happy Photoshop Friday! I thought I’d do something a little different for the next two weeks, and rather than presenting a layout with a single techinque, we’ll approach Photoshop from a tool-based perspective. We’ll talk about four ways you can use selections. This topic is so great, and so packed with good info, that I’m going to spread it across two weeks. :) Here are our examples: This week we’ll be covering the top two looks: Borders around regular-shaped objects (i.e. circles, squares, rectangles, ovals - stuff that can be drawn with basic selection tools), and borders around shape layers (i.e. the semi-transparent journaling block). Next week we’ll cover selection of a complex object, such as the flower brush (do you feel a freebie coming on? I do!), and turn it into a sticker complete with drop-shadow. We’ll also cover how to create outline text with a selection. :) Shall we get started with this week’s two techniques? See less

Partly because we’ll be talking about selections again, which are some of my favorite Photoshop features, and partly because after a lot of hard work and preparation, JessicaSprague.com is finally live! Yahooo! :D The best part of it is the instructor-led online course I’ll be teaching starting on June 18! This is something I’ve been planning and working toward for a long time, actually since way back in August-ish of last year, when CK approached me about doing an online digital scrapbooking class. I was totally excited when they gave me permission to teach this course (the same plan I had for CKU Homestudy) at my own web site. I’m so glad that it can be of some use now! :D See less

It is best to create your safety pin at twice the size you actually want and then shrink it, to get rid of the jagged edges. I started with a canvas of 250x250, with a white background. | 1. Create a path in an elongated oval. I connected two points (and back again, since paths have to be closed) so it just looked a line, and then added points to the middle of each line and pulled them out, pulling out the curve lines to make it rounder. | 2. Make a new path, and create a circular selection that follows the lines where it overlaps with the other path. I selected the other path while drawing the new one to be able to mesh with it correctly. | 3. Select the first path, and create a new layer. Choose black as your foreground colour, and go to Edit->Stroke. I chose a setting of 3 pixels wide, and centered. Depending on the size of your safety pin you may want to have it be a different width. | 4. Create a new layer, select the other path, and stroke this one with the same settings. | 5.... See less
