(02/26/10) There may be no original Broadway cast recording more iconic than 1970's Company, with its funky organ sound and Elaine Stritch's not-quite-there high notes, but the December 2006 Broadway revival makes its own mark. For Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's piece about a single man observing the benefits and follies of marriage, director John Doyle borrows the same controversial concept he used for his 2005 Sweeney Todd: the actors playing instruments on stage (now referred to in many circles as "Doyle-izing," and not always with affection and delight). But when you're listening to a cast recording, as Bobby would say: What do you get? For one thing, you'll have to adjust to some different sounds created by Doyle and his music supervisor, Mary-Mitchell Campbell. It's a benefit in "Side by Side by Side," which begins with a jazzy double-bass line. I'll give some facts about the album, go over the songs, and comment on the packaging (which is important on Radiohead albums and very important when it comes to the limited edition of this one). The historical background: When they released Kid A in Oct 2000, Radiohead said they had recorded more than 20 songs and they weren't kidding. It is very tempting to consider these 2 different albums and critics have already labelled Amnesiac as a sort of reaction to Kid A and a return to more conventional Radiohead. The truth is that Radiohead had all those songs recorded, took 10 tracks to make Kid A, and have chosen 11 more for Amnesiac. I happen to be a big fan of those sessions and argue that they produced Radiohead's best work to date. Don't expect Kid B or a regression from Kid A and it doesn't matter if you haven't heard Kid A. (04/12/08) This is a re-review. When the CD was first released I gave it one star because I found it sorely lacking in comparison with the original cast recording (which I still had on tape). Now the original cast recording is out on CD (check Amazon). And my report is that my first review was dead-on. This clean, sweet, heartfelt performance (and excellent CD transfer, by the way) is what a true tribute should be. The singing of the original cast is more leisurely, more confident, and more emotionally expressive song by song than those of THIS revival cast. Lest my own bias be the basis of my feelings, I tried an experiment. My wife is familiar was familiar with neither. I asked her to sit and listen to each performance of single tracks of each, randomly choosing which CD went first. On every song, she chose the original cast. Sometimes she could explain her choice: The singing was cleaner, the mood was more expressive. Other times, she was unable to articulate it: "I don't know why; I just like...See less

Both a fictional representation of French Impressionist painter Georges Seurat and an examination of the process of artistic creation, Sunday was for years the only Sondheim show available in only one recording. And why not, considering the original Broadway cast helped Sondheim and James Lapine develop the show in workshop, and the fact that it was recorded on video only enforced its permanence.
