(11/17/07) Made from compressed bamboo strips, this rich red dish can be used for serving or decoration. Each piece takes 45 days to complete (after the bamboo has been soaked for 6-12 months!). In the village of Tien Lu, the creation of baskets, lacquer ware and other handicrafts is an integral part of the community and culture, even causing a festival every year on August 21st. Wound bamboo comes from Cat Dang, Viet Nam. The soaked bamboo is cut into very fine strips (0.08 inch) and pressed into a curve. The strips are then coiled outward from the centre of each dish. A frame is used to achieve uniform depth and angles. After a coating of cashew oil-based glue, the work is left to dry. Each piece is cut, shaped and smoothed by hand, as many as four times, and then polished repeatedly. It takes many coats of paint, and many more polishings, to bring rough bamboo to this smooth, glowing finish. These repeated, patient processes establish the level of quality of lacquer products. Couple things to note: The wood that comes with it is only good for about 2 uses; then you have to re-order. There are not a lot of recipes with the smoker so you have to be a bit creative to figure it out. The smoker is not as deep as "smoke a turkey" would make it sound. It can hold poultry split in half OR cornish game hens. I think this works best with pork and beef productsSee less
