Deze blog is ontstaan uit mijn niet aflatende liefde voor de populaire muziek zoals die zich in de jaren vijftig en zestig ontwikkeld heeft. Het waren deze twee decennia waarin een basis is gelegd voor de muziek die we nu kennen als Rock, R&B en Soul. Maar ook bij andere instrumentale en vocale stromingen liggen veel wortels in deze periode. Hoewel mijn interesse internationaal ligt, is het vooral de ontwikkeling in Nederland die mij intrigeert. Van simpele Hollandse liedjes en 'verstaanbare' covers van Amerikaanse hits in de vijftiger jaren tot uitstekende en internationaal erkende Nederpop aan het eind van de sixties. Ik vind het grappig om kris-kras door de muziek te schuiven van bijna 50 tot 60 jaar geleden. Een tijd dat 'teenagers' langzamer volwassen werden en met hen... de muziek. Vee Jay Records was the most successful Black owned and operated record company before Motown. Founded in 1953 by Vivian Carter (the "Vee") and her husband, James (Jimmy) Bracken (the "Jay") in Gary, Indiana, Vee Jay contributed a tremendous catalog of blues, rhythm and blues, doo-wop, jazz, soul, pop, and rock n' roll music. The label started as an outgrowth of the Bracken's successful record shop, and Vivian's stint as a disc jockey at WGRY in Gary. The black music Vivian was playing on her radio show at the time was not generally available on records. The Brackens decided to start recording some of these artists, and Vee Jay was born. The couple felt that they could get a label together that could get radio play and sales through their broadcasting and retail contacts. The first artists signed to the label were the Spaniels and Jimmy Reed. Prof. Drew LeDrew and Chilly Jay Chill dissect John Stevens' Spontaenous Music Ensemble. Prof. Drew LeDrew (DLD): Is there a "British sensibility" in jazz? Is it expressed here? Chilly Jay Chill (CJC): To me, the British part of this track comes across less in the jazz elements than the other sounds. "Oliv I" has always sounded like it had a strong Brit folk tinge. Some of the ritualistic textures and droney voices seem straight off the original Wicker Man soundtrack. There's something… eldritch about the whole piece. A strange mix of minimalism and freak-folk. Like an unholy mash-up of Terry Riley and vintage Fairport Convention. DLD: So I guess you could say it's real British roots music. This new and very clean indoor go-kart racing facility offers two realistic race tracks, a game room, snack bar and micro car racing. The kids had a great time and it was relatively inexpensive. Here’s a review of this very cool way to spend a Saturday.Racing FunThe Raceway consists of two separate tracks, a full size one for drivers 54’’ tall and a junior track for younger kids (40’’ tall minimum). Being only five, our kids had to stay on the junior track, but they still had a great time. The tracks themselves and the cars are painted to create the feel of being at a real NASCAR raceway. There are murals on the walls depicting Daytona raceway and mechanics garages with race cars inside. Now, unlike the old fashioned go-carts I remember, these carts are electric.
