Have you ever thought about trying glass etching? If so, I've got a project for you! I've taken cream glass etching to a new level by using PNP Blue Transfer Paper as a resist! PNP Blue Transfer Paper was originally used to etch circuit boards and has recently been adapted to etch jewelry. I tested this transfer out on glass and it works like a charm! Use this photo-transferring method to create classy custom gifts. In the project below, I etched a photo and quote by Martha Stewart for Time Out New York magazine. (See it here!) It’s hard to resist the back to school aisles this time of year and this year I managed to just pick up this padded index card notepad. (I can’t seem to find it online.) It got me thinking about making notepads and the glue that held these index cards together–because it was just a stack of index cards glued together. But I love it! Along with my spiral bound list maker, I use this notepad all the time. So I figured how hard can it be to make a notepad and you know what? Not hard! I ordered a quart of this life changing padding compound (comes in red + white) from here for $13. This is the glue you just brush on the edge of your stack of paper to make a notepad. So simple. The compound is so thick it’s really easy to work with and you use so little of it this stuff will last forever. (I did find this Ebay seller selling smaller quantities but you get so much less for half the cost so I say go for the quart.) Or long enough to make a thousand and forty-two notepads. To make a button flower, you’ll need 5-6 smallish matching buttons, a larger button for the center, and if desired, a small button for the center of the big button. The key to making these is the glue. The three pictured above are some that I’ve used with success. What did NOT work was hot glue, craft glue, and E6000. Make sure the glue you use is meant for beads, glass, & plastics. 2. Make a ring out of your matching smaller buttons. I just wanted to point out something people seem to overlook, and something I've noticed when I do trunk sales - this "oh! I could totally make this! I'm not going to pay for it!" mentality. Yes, they could make it, but give credit to the fact that they didn't come up with the idea. Definitely something that's more of a concern when we're talking about copying small independent hand-work artists. And as I said, i was going to make them too, they look so cozy for winter!!! I did cd size for tutorial; it's easier to take photographs, but you will get smother rounded sides with a bigger circle (small salad plate or large soup bowl) * Scissors or rotary cutter / mat for fabric * Quilters see through ruler with square grids on it * Scissors for paper * Needle and thread if doing all by hand / sewing machine if doing all by machine / or half and half * Card stock to make square template * PencilDirections: * Trace round template onto fabric and cut out (use what ever method you want, such as: trace and cut with scissors or use a rotary cutter and mat with template). * Lay right sides of circles together in preparation for sewing. * Next, either sew by hand or on a sewing machine with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.... Now that I am no longer feeling compelled to keep my "trade secrets" in the men's underwear biz, I'd like to share my process on making plaids in Adobe Photoshop. I am sure others have a similar process or template, but this is the way I've been doing it for nearly 10 years, and it hasn't failed me yet. I've cranked out waaaaaaaaaaaay more plaids than I care to remember. This said, they don't call me the "Plaid Queen" for nothing. I don't really care for the title, though. Download this .psd template for a plain weave plaid (v. CS2- and a warning, it's a whopping 7MB file!). In my work, we do fabric constructions around the 90x100- 21 singles range, so this is aimed to look like a plain weave that simulates the tightness of this construction. To design a plush toy, one needs to construct an appropriate two-dimensional (2D) pattern. However, it is difficult for non-professional users to appropriately design a 2D pattern. Some recent systems automatically generate a 2D pattern for a given three-dimensional (3D) model, but constructing a 3D model is itself a challenge. Furthermore, an arbitrary 3D model cannot necessarily be realized as a real plush toy, and the final sewn result can be very different from the original 3D model. We avoid this mismatch by constructing appropriate 2D patterns and applying simple physical simulation to it on the fly during 3D modeling. In this way, the model on the screen is always a good approximation of the final sewn result, which makes the design process much more efficient. The same procedure used for blocking felt on a one-piece block is used when blocking felt on a block made in sections, with the exception of removing felt from block when felt is dry. To remove felt from the one-piece block, remove pins and blocking cords around brim and bottom of crown. Slip felt hat off block. To remove felt from a block made in sections, unpin felt from block and remove blocking cords, slip hand under block and remove one section of block at a time, until all sections of block have been removed from felt hat. You see it’s all very well and good to have a portrait that follows all the rules - but it hit me as I was surfing on Flickr today that often the most striking portraits are those that break all the rules. I want to look at some ways to break out of the mold and take striking portraits by breaking (or at least bending) the rules and adding a little randomness into your portrait photography. Peel the ugly, old shade from its frame. 2. Measure the length and circumference of your shade and cut your veneer to size using your Stanley knife. 3. Cut identical vertical strips in the veneer. The width of the strips will depend on the size of your shade. 4. Punch a hole in the top of each strip. Using your pliers, attach them to the top rim of your lampshade with the O-rings. If your shade has a bottom rim, punch a hole at the bottom of each strip and attach with the O-rings there too. 5. Plug in, turn on, and enjoy the log cabin glow. Square lampshade 1. If you're working with a square shade take your white pencil and trace the shape of one side of the existing shade on the back of the veneer. This will be your template for the other three sides. 2.
