All of the character bugs and the flowers appear to rise from their backgrounds with interesting effect. Actually, of course, when the pages are turned, parts of the illustrations really do rise from the pages. The eight interior double-page spreads are primarily fold and bend pop-ups that, in combination with the computer-produced illustrations, greatly enhance the lift-off. The simple story concerns a caterpillar who wonders what kind of creature he will be when is fully grown. He consults various insects, one of which is a grasshopper with springs on his feet, until he meets a butterfly who knows. The illustrations are brightly colored, cheerful and entertaining. The pop-ups are amusing and work well with the text. In one pop-up, a beetle struggles mightily to turn a nut with a wrench; in another a young caterpillar painter's hand moves downward and a painted swatch appears. The story, told in rhyme, is defined by the title. Buddy's toolbox is missing and the beetle's friends will not help him find it. But all ends well when it is revealed that they have built him a new toolbox. Eight pages of pop-ups is a very good number for the price of the book. 2002, Silver Dolphin, Ages 3 to 7. See less

In this book the main character is Mayday, a dragonfly who responds to SOS calls for help. She is bright blue and green, wears a 1920's pilot helmet and goggles, and the feet of her segmented legs are clad in bright-green jelly shoes. She hears a call for help but cannot tell who is in trouble or why.
