(11/28/07) Amazon.com Yoga for plus-sized women? Why not, especially when it's presented clearly, simply, and utterly without condescension, which is the case with Just My Size Yoga. Instructor Megan Garcia, a large woman herself, knows that self-consciousness and limitations due to shape and size keep many would-be yoga practitioners from attending actual classes; hence this 45-minute program designed to introduce new students to yoga's many benefits. Garcia promises that a regular yoga practice will promote not only physical well-being (including energy and flexibility) but also confidence, calm, and what she calls "an inner sense of self"--ambitious goals, to be sure, but also attainable ones. The practice consists of three parts. The warm-up focuses on the breath, along with arm lifts, spinal twists, and such; the "workout" section includes some reasonably demanding poses like Warrior 1 and 2 and downward-facing dog (after demonstrating each pose separately, Garcia repeats them as one...See less

(11/13/07) People tend to confuse the band Mazzy Star with it's singer Hope Sandoval. Truth be told, they've been right all along. Sandoval's languid, weeping willow voice is Mazzy Star; the name is a mere formality. With nods to Nico and the Velvet Underground, So Tonight that I Might See is vintage Mazzy. Remarkably, the recording produced a strikingly undanceable single, "Fade into You," that ascended to respectable rotation on college and AAA radio. The rest of the album sticks close to the single's plaintive, retro balladry. Though Sandoval rarely raises her voice above a sultry whisper, it's bright enough to hold your attention all night. --Nick HeilSee less

(11/02/07) Twenty-nine essays compiled by Dith Pran, each written by a Cambodian who was still in childhood when Cambodia fell into Pol Pot's hands. Ben Kiernan ties the collection together so well in his introduction: "Children had to work like adults. Adults, given instructions like children, were treated like animals." As Kiernan notes, Pol Pot's efforts to build his twisted revolution on the backs of these children certainly backfired! The accompanying photos of the contributing authors and the details of their successful new lives in America will make any American recognize what a 'promised land' our country still remains. In so many many ways America has failed the Cambodian people, but most of those fortunate few who reached our shores have made successful lives for themselves and their families. The difficulties confronting those who remain in Cambodia today are seemingly insurmountable. As has been said so many times, every Cambodian has a story to tell, and a river of ink could not...See less

(11/02/07) From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. In her second memoir, Ung picks up where her first, the National Book Awardwinning First They Killed My Father, left off, with the author escaping a devastated Cambodia in 1980 at age 10 and flying to her new home in Vermont. Though she embraces her American lifewhich carries advantages ranging from having a closet of her own to getting a formal education and enjoying The Brady Bunchshe can never truly leave her Cambodian life behind. She and her eldest brother, with whom she escaped, left behind their three other siblings. This book is alternately heart-wrenching and heartwarming, as it follows the parallel lives of Loung Ung and her closest sister, Chou, during the 15 years it took for them to reunite. Loung effectively juxtaposes chapters about herself and her sister to show their different worlds: while the author's meals in America are initially paid for with food stamps, Chou worries about whether she'll be able to scrounge enough rice;...See less

(11/02/07) Amazon.com Written in the present tense, First They Killed My Father will put you right in the midst of the action--action you'll wish had never happened. It's a tough read, but definitely a worthwhile one, and the author's personality and strength shine through on every page. Covering the years from 1975 to 1979, the story moves from the deaths of multiple family members to the forced separation of the survivors, leading ultimately to the reuniting of much of the family, followed by marriages and immigrations. The brutality seems unending--beatings, starvation, attempted rape, mental cruelty--and yet the narrator (a young girl) never stops fighting for escape and survival. Sad and courageous, her life and the lives of her young siblings provide quite a powerful example of how war can so deeply affect children--especially a war in which they are trained to be an integral part of the armed forces. For anyone interested in Cambodia's recent history, this book shares a valuable personal...See less

(02/24/06) The frontman and lyricist for the Smashing Pumpkins—whose alternative-rock hits soared through millions of radios in the mid-1990s—enters the arena of the written word with this passionate, if rarely subtle, debut. Corgan has also worked in Chicago-area theater and in spoken-word performance, and his free verse often shows the directness associated with those venues, as well as the oddities fans of his lyrics will know: "The way/ You look/ At me/ Makes me/ Lonely/ Grinding tears/ Behind a mask/ Made of/ Abalone," begins "The Sun of Flowers." Hope, dreams and erotic excitement are frequent themes, while nautical or seaside settings predominate: "the most eternal sun-drenched kiss," Corgan exclaims, "is locked in my mind as something I won’t miss/ Or even try to remember." Other work may resonate with fans, yet strike even them as vague, even amateurish: "Whatever was needed will find its way home/ Delivered with riches and prayers full of soul." The title, with its intimations of a...See less
