The 2006 Pinot Noir was produced from grapes grown in four counties: Mendocino (47%), Solano (24%), Sonoma (16%), and Napa (13%). This combination, in a good quality year like 2006, has yielded a wine with lots of classic Pinot Noir character. The largest fraction, from Mendocino County, was grown in the Redwood Valley area, and created a cherries-and-plums fruit character and a plush texture on which to build the blend. Solano County in turn has given us its usual up-front fruit with ripeness that broadens the palate impression and gives the wine a pleasing and generous keynote. In Sonoma County (Sonoma Carneros, actually), we benefited from a warm late season that produced a deep-colored, complex, mulberry-like fraction, adding some elegant tone and fine spice-cake notes to the whole; while our Napa component, from the southeast part of the valley, contributed spectacular power and depth, with rich stone fruit character, to the final blend. For Rabid Red, we have always felt that the aroma and flavor profile needed to include a full-throttle, deep, ripe character, yet also something to lend definitionand 'tone' to the blend. The makeup of the 2004 Rabid Red reflects these notions pretty well. Forty-six percent of the blend is split between Petite Sirah and Syrah (28% and 18% respectively), the Petite Sirah being from the warmer, more southerly part of Monterey County, and the Syrah hailing from the area just north of Paso Robles. Since we had a concentrated, rich, yet velvety lot of Tempranillo, we were not surprised to find that in tasting trials it bolstered the power and concentration of the other varieties without adding edgy tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, at 35%, was the usual choice for the unifying factor of the blend. The greater part of this came from the Paso Robles area, which can be relied upon for texturally satisfying, ripe, and accessible Cabernet. Growing Season Notes: An unusually warm end of February and March led to early bud break. Temperatures were closer to normal in June and July, but steady moderate heat kept grape development on an early pace. The Pinot Noir this year was all ripe at once. The flavor intensity of the fruit was outstanding. The Trinchero Family wines are rich, fruit forward, well-structured and delicious. They also represent remarkable value. The foundation for these wines comes from our estate vineyards located in prime maritime appellations. We own 200 acres in Lake County, 525 acres in Santa Barbara County and 200 acres in Napa Valley, giving us a wide array of styles and flavor profiles to choose from. All of our estate fruit is grown using sustainable farming methods. Outside growers are selected strictly on quality and consistency. If a vineyard does not meet our exacting standards it will be dropped. Conversely, if it consistently meets our exacting standards we will secure the vineyard with long term contracts.
