Check out this sweet Mac mini install inside a 2006 BMW 325. Hal Fitzgerald spent four months hunting for the right installer to complete his project and the results are impressive. All the computer hardware including the Mac mini CPU, a Newertech MiniStack 250GB drive with USB and Firewire hub, and a Carnetix P1900 power supply are mounted in the trunk where the CD changer would normally go. The audio is fed out of the Mac mini right into the factory 1/8" changer input. Hal had a custom mount built to support the 7" Lilliput touchscreen. "I couldn't find anything that was going to let me mount the screen exactly where I needed. With the custom mount, it's now low enough on the dash so I can still see my dashboard and windshiled completely. I wanted the install to be minimally intrusive to the aesthetics of the car and also wanted to be able to return the car to its original state very easily. I live in Colorado, and normally, the nearby mountains cause a lot of interference. On average, this device could connect simultaniously to 10 sattelites. Bravo! The included GPS software is really nice. It might take a minute to verify the address you are trying to locate. But it can calculate the route rather fast, and if you make a mistake, it can recalculate fast as well. It has great audible voice commands thanks to the front speaker. And if your concern is that this device is not so great looking. Well, remember that ASUS makes high quality laptops, and their percision craftsmanship can be seen in this device. And, pictures show it no justice, you gotta hold it to realize how good it looks. Other than that, Windows mobile 5 runs great. It's a quick deivce. Overall very nice See less

There are several significant reasons why you might opt for an aftermarket system. The most obvious is price: While OEM systems are usually a costly option of several thousand dollars, aftermarket systems start at about $300, and few cost more than $1500. You're accessing the same data set, and likely using similar software that converts it to roads and routes, all at a fraction of the price. These aftermarket systems take up much less space in your dash-with many only requiring as much space as a regular audio system-and installation is usually not any more difficult than for a normal audio system (most can be reinstalled again in another vehicle). They also offer comparable performance to OEM systems-with voice prompts and directional arrows, though the low-end models don't offer detailed maps or full-color display screens. If they don't have simple on-screen inputs, just make sure the small buttons or controls are easy enough to manage. See less
