In the Bay Area, he may seem just another tech guy in jeans and T-shirt who made a small fortune from a series of startups. But on the other side of the globe, the 55-year-old Fremont resident has composed music for 18 films in India's exuberant movie industry and has his own autograph-seeking fans. Surrounded by cameras, cables, lights, crew and actors inside the Moore Buick-Pontiac-GMC-Truck dealership on Los Gatos Boulevard, where they'll be filming from sundown to sunrise, his soft green eyes look tired. He wearily fidgets with a string of beads from Hawaii that he wears around his wrist. No, they're not worry beads he says. "But I worry with 'em." After a disappointing experience with conventional distribution of his first feature, "Bomb the System," Rekhi felt strongly that filmmakers face an uphill climb in an industry rigged in favor of the distributors. Ben Rekhi, who turns 27 in a few days, has already produced two films -- Bomb the System and Waterborne. Both films were made on a shoestring budget of less than $1 million each and have traveled to a number of film festivals. While the first film about graffiti artists went straight to DVD, the latter, about Los Angeles being hit by bioterrorism, is being shown on Google.com as a Google video feature before it goes the DVD way. Rekhi recently completed Car Babes which he says is another serious film with a few light moments. Rekhi, son of Silicon Valley businessman Kanwal S Rekhi, is getting ready to produce his fourth film, Waste. That will be his second directorial vehicle after Waterborne.
