Ben Rekhi, Waterborne's twenty-something writer and director has been making bold statements on film for more than a decade. He graduated from the NYU School of Film and Television, where he directed, shot, and produced several award winning shorts, including The Waste Project, which won the Best Actor prize at the First Run Festival, and Dirty Laundry, for which he received a Post Production Grant from Warner Bros. Pictures. Upon graduating, Rekhi went on to direct music videos for Hindi pop star Sanjay Maroo that aired on Zee TV in India. Rekhi's video for Interscope Record's band Dredg (for the song ‘Of the Room’) was voted number one on the Fuse TV Network program Oven Fresh, with over thirty million viewers. See less

Along the crest of the Santa Cruz Mountains, Castle Rock State Park embraces coast redwood, Douglas-fir, and madrone forest, most of which has been left in its wild, natural state. Steep canyons are sprinkled with unusual rock formations that are popular with rock climbers. The forest here is lush and mossy, crisscrossed by 32 miles of hiking and horseback riding trails. These trails are part of an even more extensive trail system that links the Santa Clara and San Lorenzo valleys with Castle Rock State Park, Big Basin Redwoods State Park, and the Pacific Coast. Primitive campsites for backpackers are the only overnight facilities. Equestrians are urged to call ahead for current trail information, and smokers are advised that, due to high fire hazard, smoking is prohibited on the trails within Castle Rock State Park. Dogs are not allowed on the trails or in the campground. See less

This is the park of paradox. Although you can see it from Summit Road, Highway 17 and much of the Santa Clara Valley, some areas of this open space preserve are difficult to access; other areas impossible. It may lack the beauty of redwoods or waterfalls yet it has its own unique charms—interesting scenic views, hidden canyons and high, flat plateaus covering thousands of acres. You can look down on millions of people but rarely see another hiker. (On my weekday morning hike, I saw only two hikers and one bicyclist.) See less

Highlights: Buy a parking ticket here for $4.00, then continue on to the second parking lot (where the crew boats are stored.)

The eastside of Almaden Quicksilver Park is shaded from the afternoon sun by the Los Capitancillos Ridge. This part of the park has deep oak woodlands. Three trails run along the eastside: The New Almaden Trail, the Hacienda Trail, and the Virl O. Norton Memorial Trail. The New Almaden Trail is the longest trail in the park. It runs for 6.7 miles along the middle of the northeast slopes of the park from near the McAbee Road entrance to the Mockingbird Hill entrance of the park. The Mockingbird Hill entrance is located at the end of Mockingbird Hill Lane, which is off Almaden Road near the end of Almaden Expressway. The trail starts in shady woods near the parking lot. Along the way are interpretive signs installed as an scout project. See less

The District's 25 preserves range from 55 to nearly 17,000 acres and are open to the public free of charge, 365 days a year from dawn until one-half hour after sunset. Use the Preserve Finder to find which is closest to you. Open space preserves are generally kept in a natural condition in order to best protect the environment and wildlife habitat, and are developed with only the amenities needed to provide low-intensity recreation. The diverse ecosystems at the preserves include redwood, oak and fir forests, chaparral-covered hillsides, riparian corridors, grasslands, and the shore frontage along San Francisco Bay. Improvements may include gravel parking areas, restrooms, signed trails for hiking, bicycling, and equestrian and dog use, and an occasional picnic table. See less
