The question posed by an album like We the Kings is not whether it brings something unexpected to the party, but how well it performs the functions expected of it: sounding good on a semi-popular high school girl's new iPod Nano, over the in-store sound system at Aeropostale, and in the background of ads for the teen-oriented series on The CW. And frankly, it does a pretty excellent job at all three. If the quartet -- they're one of those bands who only go by their first names, which is fine because they really might as well all be called Chad and Kyle -- had been around a decade or so ago, they would likely have been sucked into Lou Pearlman's boy band factory, but it being 2007, the sound of the moment is speedy, crisp power pop with just a little distortion on the guitars and just a little emo hoarseness in the vocals, but with neither getting in...See less

They've got the gleaming guitars, urgent vocals, and driving rhythms propelling three-minute ditties about their hearts, their girls, and those girls who just like to toy with their poor hearts. But unlike similarly styled bands, Boys Like Girls are largely lacking much of anything that could either separate them from the pack or, at the very least, give them more substance to appeal to more than just the teenaged girls who will be singing along enthusiastically at shows while secretly pining for the shaggy-haired, boyish clan. It's also the goal of Jacinda, the dragon-human "draki" for whom it's love at first sight when "bad boy" draki-hunter Will calls her beautiful. While the notion that women find their highest calling in self-sacrifice is common in romances, paranormal or otherwise, it's distressing to see it presented so plainly. Jacinda does have one other option: she can allow herself to become a flightless "broodmare" with the son of the draki pack alpha instead. She has written a sequel that improves upon the first book…Katniss is more sophisticated in this book, and her observations are more acute. We see this when she notices how much more difficult it is to kill people once you know them, or when she observes the decadent (and for the reader perhaps uncomfortably familiar) citizens of the Capitol gorging and then taking pills to make themselves vomit, or with her gradual realization that she may just stand for something greater than herself. All this is accomplished with the light touch of a writer who truly understands writing for young people: the pacing is brisk and the message tucked below the surface.See less

(06/16/10) June 12, 2010: When I first bought the book, I was expecting some ghost story or something like that. But I was wrong! There was romance, adventure, and action. It was not boring at all, it was one of those books that you can't put down until you reach the end. I personally loved the story. I saw it at the school book fair, gazed at the pretty cover, read the short description, bought it, and FELL IN LOVE! I would recommend this to those who like reading love stories with an...odd twist. It was a delightful story that will be sure to please just about anybody!See less

(02/27/10) January 15, 2010: i absolutely love this series! i picked up Wondrous Strange on a whim when it came out and instantly fell in love. With Darklight, Lesley Livingston continued to keep me absorbed in the story, and ultimately, the characters. I love the twist with Sonny. I knew there was some kind of twist coming, but never did I expect that. However, the ending made me sad (I'm a bit of a hopeless romantic). Now begins the unbearable wait for the next book. ::sigh::See less
