(12/13/07) Amazon.com If you're envying the six-pack abs on Jillian Michaels, trainer from NBC's The Biggest Loser and self-proclaimed "TV's toughest fitness guru," look no further than her Shape-Up Backside exercise DVD for an intense high-impact workout. Michaels keeps your body moving (though she herself skips out on half the exercises) with hammer curls, oblique raises, step ups, planks, and a move called The Superman destined to tone your back, biceps glutes, hamstrings and abs. There's a lower-level option, but Michaels likes to "kick your butt," as she says, to get you to feel the burn. Shape-Up Backside's DVD features include printable diet/exercise logs, nutrition tips and recipes. It requires two props: a bench-style exercise step and light dumbbells, which may make it difficult for beginners. But if you give it a try, even in the comfort of your living room you'll think you're in a gym -- trainer yelling in your ear and all. -- Ellen A. (12/13/07) Amazon.com Jillian Michaels, the trainer from NBC's The Biggest Loser and self-proclaimed "TV's toughest fitness guru," runs through circuit training like a drill sergeant on caffeine. Her theory is to keep moving in between exercises to burn twice as many calories, so she cycles her team through sumo squats, mountain climbers, jump ropes, shoulder raises and bicycle moves without taking a breath. If she doesn't think one of her comrades is picking up his knees high enough, she makes everyone do 30 more, with a sadistic grin. As a result, you can almost literally watch the muscle burn. Michaels' Shape-Up Front DVD works out the chest, shoulders, triceps and quads. It also requires two props: a bench-style exercise step and light dumbbells. The DVD features include printable diet/exercise logs, nutrition tips and recipes. Despite a lower-level option, it isn't for anyone looking for a low-impact aerobic workout. --Ellen A. (08/05/07) I first saw "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" in 1991, and I've LOVED it ever since. I was so thrilled to see that Paramount was giving this classic film an upgraded DVD Special Edition. Upon seeing it however, I must say that I'm pretty disappointed. The extras, although enjoyable, are sorely lacking what they could and SHOULD be. Most of the film's major stars (and sometimes even minor ones like Kristy Swanson and Richard Edson) provide some updated interviews that are fun to watch. But, the bonus material and interviews featuring Mia Sara are all from 1986! She obviously CAN'T be that busy these days, so doesn't it make sense that an updated interview with her could have been included? Also, the shooting script for this movie contains MANY deleted scenes and dialogue, some of which were a GREAT read and are bound to have been filmed. Ferris going through the house looking for money in some STRANGE places (all while the Pink Floyd tune "Money" was playing), as well as Cameron's dad seeing...See less

(08/05/07) Amazon.com The era of Molly Ringwald's profitable collaboration with writer-producer-director John Hughes (Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club) was at its peak with this 1986 film (directed by Howard Deutch but in every sense part of the developing Hughes empire). Ringwald plays a high school girl on the budget side of the tracks, living with her warm and loving father (Harry Dean Stanton) and usually accompanied by her insecure best friend (Jon Cryer). When a wealthy but well-meaning boy (Andrew McCarthy) asks her out, her perspective is overturned and Cryer's character is threatened. As was the case in the mid-'80s, Hughes (who wrote the script and produced the film) brought his special feel for the cross-currents of adolescent life to this story. In its very commercial way, it is an honest, entertaining piece about growing pains. The attractive supporting cast (many of whom are much better known now) does a terrific job, and Ringwald and Cryer have excellent chemistry. --Tom Keogh...See less

(08/05/07) If you thought the TV show was outrageous, wait 'til you get a load of the movie... Yep, the outrageous MTV show now has its very own movie. "Jackass: The Movie" includes all of your favorite misfits as they perform some of the most outrageous, painful, and disgusting stunts ever to be caught on camera. Join Johnny Knoxville and his gang as they do everything possible to make sure that this is the most outrageous and disgusting thing your eyes have ever seen. I will not give away any of the stunts, for what's so great about the movie is being surprised. There's no storyline, no plot, and no set-up. It is what it is, and it makes no apologies. That's why I love it so much. I have never cringed so many times in my life! I was laughing non-stop and my eyes were flooded with tears when it was all said and done. Be warned, this is NOT for people who get easily offended or disgusted. This is not for people with weak stomachs. If you don't like anything that's distasteful, then skip this one...See less

I liked "Jackass" and I liked this new one even better. What Johnny Knoxville and his merry band of idiots have done...
(08/05/07) I liked "Jackass" and I liked this new one even better. What Johnny Knoxville and his merry band of idiots have done brilliantly is use this countries political correctness against them. They know what is funny far better than the PC crowd. Terrorists, funny. Naked grandmas, funny. People hurting themselves, funny. For years we have been adding things to our "Not Funny" list and thus eliminating them from our movies. That means that our multiplexes are filling up with toothless, light-hearted films masquerading as comedies. In an ad for this film a crowded theater filled with people engaging in uproarious laughter is showed. Then the ad asks when the last time was that you had an experience like that. My guess is that it wasn't during "Rumor Has It," or "Big Momma's House 2," or "Just My Luck." So the way I see it the Jackass gang is reminding us what it's like to laugh. Or put another way, they're bringing funny back. That is not to say that all of their stunts are golden. Some, such...See less

(08/05/07) Cinderella This favorite Disney classic has enchanted generations of children. It has the message that if you dream, your dream can come true. "A dream is a wish your heart makes." --Cinderella sings Cinderella lives in a run down house and sleeps up in the tower. The view of the king's castle is like a beacon of hope for her. Hope for something in the future gives children meaning in life and promotes optimism. They can also relate to the sibling rivalry between the sisters! The cat is just so naughty and the mice adorable. Cinderella also sees the good in life. Even though she has to clean, cook and is basically the maid in her own home, she still even finds good in life and even the evil cat, Lucifer. While she is washing the floor, she sings and bubbles float in the air. Each bubble carries an image of her scrubbing the floor and the harmony is just beautiful as you hear many voices (all hers) singing. The pumpkin transformation is my favorite part and Cinderella's dress is just...See less

(08/05/07) One of the brightest nuggets from Disney's golden age, this 1937 film is almost dizzying in its meticulous construction of an enchanted world, with scores of major and minor characters (including fauna and fowl), each with a distinct identity. When you watch Snow White's intricate, graceful movements of fingers, arms, and head all in one shot, it is not the technical brilliance of Disney's artists that leaps out at you, but the very spirit of her engaging, girl-woman character. When the wicked queen's poisoned apple turns from killer green to rose red, the effect of knowing something so beautiful can be so terrible is absolutely elemental, so pure it forces one to surrender to the horror of it. Based on the Grimm fairy tale, Snow White is probably the best family film ever to deal, in mythic terms, with the psychological foundation for growing up. It's a crowning achievement and should not be missed. --Tom Keogh Disney figured out that it's not necessarily how many extras a DVD offers,...See less

(08/05/07) The first season of "The O.C." was the guilty pleasure of the 2003-2004 television series, although when it popped up in the summer of 2003 that really was more the end of the 2002-2003 television series. After CBS had its great success with the original "Survivor" as a summer series, it took a while for somebody to take the next step, which was what FOX did when they offered up this new soap opera into the wasteland of summer reruns. Actually, the first seven episodes that aired in August and September constituted a test run for "The O.C.," which came back with another twenty episodes starting at the end of October. The appeal of the show based on the early buzz and media attention was supposed to be on the relationship between Ryan Atwood (Benjamin McKenzie), the boy from the wrong side of the track who is given a second chance by a compassionate lawyer, and Marissa Cooper (Mischa Barton), the spoiled little rich girl who lives next door. Basically the selling point was that he...See less

(08/05/07) Amazon.com Welcome to the dark side. At the end of The O.C.'s second season, Marissa (Mischa Barton) shoots the troubled Trey to stop him from strangling his brother, Ryan (Ben McKenzie). She saves her boyfriend's life, but it leads to her expulsion from Harbor High--just as she was to begin her senior year. Meanwhile, Ryan's guardian, Kirsten (Kelly Rowan), is doing time in rehab. It won't be easy for her to stay dry with two-faced resident Charlotte (Jeri Ryan, Shark) making every attempt to take advantage of her vulnerability. Ever the hothead, Ryan recovers in time to punch out the mean new dean (Eric Mabius, Ugly Betty), who expels him next. So, Kirsten's husband, Sandy (Peter Gallagher), hires a tutor, while Marissa attends public school where she falls in with the surfing crowd, including the besotted Johnny (Ryan Donowho). Arguably, Marissa's newly widowed mother, Julie (Melinda Clarke), is hit hardest when she finds that husband Caleb (Kirsten's father) didn't leave behind as...See less

(08/05/07) And with these final 16 episodes, the once pop-cultural phenomenon "The OC" finally fades to white. It had been a rocky road for the series and the characters over the 4-years that `The OC' aired on the FOX network, but through it all the series persisted. The theme of season 4 was essentially `going back to the beginning' and that was exactly what happened in this final season. Since all the main characters either died or graduated high school in the third season finale, the four season premier seemed more like a pilot than a season finale of a show near its end. And for 15 additional episodes the writers brought the humor, wackiness, and pop cultural refrences that made the series so popular to begin with back, leaving the melodrama at a bare minimum. I'm sad to see `the OC' go, it will always be a part of my history because for better or for worse I watched the show through every-one of its 94 episodes, and I will remember these characters fondly. I also need to mention the series...See less

(08/05/07) Amazon.com For Depression-era audiences, much of the fun of screwball comedies such as It Happened One Night and My Man Godfrey, was the pleasure of watching rich people act like loons or get their redemptive comeuppance from some Average Joe. The same vicarious kicks are at play in the sophomore season of The Simple Life, in which Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie drive from Florida to California. With no cash or credit cards, they must depend on the kindness of strangers (invariably nonplussed men whom the ladies approach for handouts at toll booths, gas stations, or fast food joints). The series takes great delight in putting the pampered and privileged duo in embarrassing situations, such as getting them jobs as maids at a nudist resort. But through it all, our uneasy riders are game for almost anything and never lose their 'tude. And just when their antics try the viewers' patience or sympathy (at the nudist resort, they shamelessly goldbrick on the job, posing as guests and calling...See less

(08/05/07) And I mean that. These girls can make anything funny, and this season they take things up a notch and really let loose. My favorite episode has to be when they are sent to sort mail and then by luch for everyone at the firm they are interning at and they screw everything up ROYALLY, eating everyones food, throwing mail in any bin and making faxes of their breast's and handing them out to the workers. This show is the funniest thing on TV and now it's the funniest thing in my DVD case. All the 4 & 5 star reviews are just added proof that Nicole & Paris serve up some of the biggest laughs in reality (or unreality) TV. Worth every penny (it's cheap so pick it up!)
